With the Super Fire Crystal active, Magnus Specter strolled to the cage like he had all the time in the world. He lifted a hand at the rat demon beast.
The beast shuddered at once, opened its jaws, and let go of Sophia Reid’s arm. Then it shrank back, scared stiff.
Sophia dropped hard to the ground on her backside. But the instant she steadied herself, she sprang at Magnus like a wildcat, plain as day—she was coming to risk her life with him.
Magnus had figured that no matter how mad she was, she was still a woman, and a damned pretty one at that. At the very least, she ought to care a little about her dignity and cover what ought to be covered first.
That was why he’d walked over slow and easy to the cage door. He hadn’t even thought to run.
Who would’ve guessed this woman was this fierce?
She came at him in a leap, reckless as hell. This was her second awakening in speed—six times an ordinary person’s. Magnus knew damn well he was slower than Sophia. His first thought was simple: pin her down first.
Otherwise, with no Metal Crystal active yet, if she slapped him full across the face, whether it hurt or not was beside the point. With all those female team members watching, where the hell would he put his pride?
But Sophia was beyond reason. Rage had rushed straight to her head. She had pushed herself to the limit, and she never expected Magnus to charge straight at her too. The distance was too short, the speed too fast. She had no time to pull back.
A flash of panic flickered across her face.
Then, in the next instant, her head buzzed, and all strength ran out of her body.
Magnus wasn’t any better off.
He had meant to rush up and restrain her, but she was moving too fast. There was no time to react. In less than a second, his vision went black, and his face was suddenly smothered by something soft and full—
Damn it. Finished.
His heart turned cold. He knew exactly what that was.
This was life-and-death stuff. No time to think.
With his vision still blacked out, Magnus moved by instinct. He grabbed both Sophia’s arms at once and shoved forward hard, forcing her hands behind her back and turning her so she faced away from him.
He locked both her wrists from behind and fumbled at the black ring tattoo on the middle finger of his left hand.
First thing—activate the Metal Crystal.
Last time, he’d force-kissed this woman, and she’d answered by putting a shot straight into his stomach. This time the mess was even bigger, and right in front of so many people. If her blood really rushed to her head, she might just put a shot through his skull.
This was no damned joke.
Charlotte Renard and several of the other women rushed over in a panic. Sophia’s body had gone limp and weak. Magnus yelled for them to hold her down, then turned and bolted for the RV at top speed, slammed inside, and locked the door tight.
He strode to the sofa and dropped onto it. There was still half a cup of cold coffee on the tea table—no clue whose it was. He picked it up and drained it in one go, then dragged in a few rough breaths and lit a cigarette.
“Shit... finished.”
Magnus knew there were only two roads left now.
Either from now on, every time he saw Sophia Reid, he activated the Metal Crystal first. At night, he’d have to bar the door when he slept. Even then, no guarantee she wouldn’t grab that bottle of medicine from Victoria Reyes and spray him with it.
Or else someday he’d have to truly make things official with Sophia—make that kind of thing real, bring it into the open. If their relationship was public, at least the look on her face wouldn’t be quite so ugly.
Two choices. That was it.
But right now Magnus had no mind for that sort of thing. And even if he did, she had to be willing. More than that—if he really got tangled up with her, what happened later if she started bullying Sarah Franklin and Ashton Honda?
No telling what might happen.
He was still caught in that knot of thoughts when a burst of mad pounding erupted outside the RV door. He didn’t need a brain to know who it was. Mixed in with it were Charlotte Renard’s voice and the voices of Liana Jabbar and a few others who had rushed over to break it up.
“Magnus Specter, you bastard! You turtle-headed coward! Get out here and fight me one-on-one! Today it’s either you die or I live!”
Magnus sat there with the cigarette at his lips and almost laughed from sheer anger.
Either I die or you live?
Hell, this woman really knew how to talk. No matter how you twisted it, it still ended with him dead.
That made it even more impossible for him to go out.
Even if he beat her outside, what glory was there in that? None at all.
Magnus Specter paced back and forth in the RV’s sitting room, restless as a caged beast. He kept glancing at the windows. All sealed shut. There was a small opening in the bedroom that connected to the driver’s cabin, but it was too tight for a person to squeeze through.
Outside, Sophia Reid was still hammering the door like she meant to smash the whole vehicle apart. The noise grew louder and louder, making his scalp prickle. Magnus was still racking his brain for a way out when the pounding stopped dead.
Then Sophia’s furious shout ripped through the air.
“Chloe Clark, what the hell are you doing? I still haven’t settled what happened the night before last with you! What do you want?”
Settle a score with Chloe Clark?
Magnus blinked. Wasn’t Chloe the one who had come to notify them that night, the one who helped lead them to capture Victoria Reyes and the other two? Why was Sophia trying to go after her too?
He held his breath and listened harder.
Outside, Chloe’s voice came fast and urgent. “Sister Xiaoxue—”
“Don’t call me that! I’m not your sister!” Sophia snapped, her voice sharp enough to cut flesh.
Then Emily Ward spoke up, her tone gentler but steady. “Sophia, don’t be like this first... Chloe was carrying out a mission in Ironvale. If she rushed back this hard, then something must have happened. Chloe, what is it? Say it now. Do you have to find Magnus for this?”
“Th-then... alright, Commander! Near Ironvale County railway station, we found a large group of survivors. We...”
“What did you say? Survivors? A large group?” Emily’s voice changed at once.
“Yes, a large group. All men. More than a hundred of them!”
The moment he heard that, Magnus froze.
He stopped caring about anything else and yanked the door open at once. “Chloe, get in and talk. Survivors? What’s going on? Any casualties?”
“You bastard, you finally dare open the door?!” Sophia roared and lunged over.
Charlotte Renard, who had been holding onto her arm the whole time, hurriedly dragged her back. “Sophia, this is serious business. Go put your clothes on first...”
“Put on what?!” Sophia exploded, face flushed with rage. “He’s already seen everything he could see! What secrets do I still have left in front of him?!”
“Sophia, calm down first. Let’s hear Chloe out...”
Charlotte shot the others a look. Four female team members immediately came over from both sides, each grabbing one of Sophia’s arms, coaxing her, trying to cool her down.
Sophia was breathing hard, chest heaving. She shot Magnus a vicious glare, like she wanted to carve a hole through him with her eyes.
“Magnus Specter, remember this. I’m not done with you.”
Magnus brought Chloe into the RV.
The moment she got inside, Chloe began reporting without even pausing for breath. “Commander, at Ironvale County railway station, we found at least a hundred survivors. All men. They’re digging up the meteorite there. We didn’t suffer any casualties, but they...”
“What about them?” Magnus cut in, unable to hold back.
Chloe hesitated.
“They said...” Her face turned strange at once. Something awkward, something hard to describe. She turned her head and glanced at Emily Ward. “They said they have someone we urgently need, and they want fifty tons of rice and one thousand Crystals in exchange.”
One person?
Magnus went still for a beat.
What kind of person could be worth that much?
His first thought was almost instinctive. He quickly started running through the past few days in his head, wondering whether the Ice Regiment had lost some important female member without his noticing.
Chloe clearly had the same reaction when she first heard it, so she hurried to explain, “They said it’s a man, not a woman!”
“A man?” Magnus stared at her, startled.
“Yes... that person is a man...” Chloe said softly.
As she spoke, she stole another uneasy glance at Emily beside her. She bit her lip, her fingers tightening slightly. It was clear she was hesitating, unsure whether she should keep going.
