When Elion’s consciousness finally returned, the first thing he noticed was that his head was resting on an impossibly soft pillow.
Still half asleep, he moved his idle hands and began feeling up the strange pillow beneath him. "Wow... this pillow is so soft," he muttered.
His ears were immediately graced by the soft chime of a smooth giggle.
"I always knew you were a pervert, but touching me inappropriately immediately after waking up, with your eyes still closed no less?" a familiar voice teased. "Have you no shame?"
"Hmmm?"
Elion slowly opened one eye and looked up, only for his vision to be blessed by the sight of the palest and one of the most beautiful faces he had ever seen.
Then there was her hair, which had suddenly changed from the familiar raven black to a pure shade of white.
"Celeste..." Elion said with a smile.
The two stared at each other affectionately.
"Hello, sleepyhead," she responded smoothly, bringing both hands forward to hold the sides of his head.
Celeste’s fingers gently moved through his hair as she continued looking down at him, her crimson eyes carrying a warmth that would have left every vampire elder speechless if they had been present to witness it.
Elion remained silent for a few moments, simply enjoying the feeling of her hands against his head and the softness beneath him.
His fingers began to move around again, exploring that softness that only her thighs could provide him.
Celeste’s smile stiffened slightly. "Elion."
"Hm?"
"Your hands."
"What about them?" He asked with a teasing smile, clearly indicating he was fully aware of what he was doing.
"You are groping me."
Elion glanced downward, finally confirming with his own eyes that the impossibly soft pillow beneath his head was, in fact, Celeste’s lap.
More specifically, his wandering hands had somehow found their way to her thighs. He gave them another experimental squeeze.
Celeste’s pale cheeks gained the faintest hint of color. "Elion."
"I was just making sure."
"Making sure of what?"
"That you were real."
Celeste stared down at him. "And squeezing my thighs was necessary for that?"
"Absolutely."
She released a soft sigh, but the smile never left her face. "You truly have no shame."
"You say that as though you only just realized it." Elion finally opened both eyes properly and took a closer look at her.
The difference was impossible to miss.
Celeste had always possessed an almost unnatural beauty, but now there was something greater about her. Her features had become slightly more refined, and the cold elegance that had always surrounded her now carried an overwhelming sense of authority.
Her skin was so pale that it looked almost unreal, like flawless white porcelain untouched by warmth or blood.
Even her lips appeared more vibrant because of the contrast. Then there was her hair.
The raven-black strands he had grown accustomed to were gone, replaced by hair as white as freshly fallen snow.
It flowed down her back and across her shoulders, framing her corpse-pale face in a way that made her crimson eyes appear even more striking.
Elion slowly raised one hand from her thigh and caught a lock of her hair between his fingers. "It really changed."
Celeste nodded. "Do you dislike it?"
There was no obvious insecurity in her voice, but Elion could hear the faint concern hidden beneath the question.
He smiled. "No." He brought the lock closer and pressed a light kiss against it.
"You could lose all your hair, and I would still find you beautiful."
Celeste’s eyes narrowed. "That was almost romantic."
"Almost?"
"You ruined it by imagining me bald."
Elion laughed softly.
The sound caused a faint ache to spread through his body, reminding him just how weak he currently felt.
His smile slowly faded as he became more aware of his surroundings.
He was lying in a large bed inside an unfamiliar but luxurious room. Heavy black curtains covered the tall windows, while dark red candles floated near the walls, filling the chamber with a dim and comfortable light.
Celeste was seated against the headboard, with his head resting across her lap. His clothes had been changed at some point, and a thick blanket covered most of his body.
"You really did a number on me. How long was I asleep?" he asked.
Celeste’s fingers paused in his hair. "A little while."
Elion looked up at her. "How long is a little while?"
She avoided his gaze. "Celeste."
"One week."
Elion blinked. "One week?"
Celeste pressed her lips together. "Yes."He slowly tried to sit up, only for dizziness to strike him almost immediately.
The room seemed to tilt violently around him. Celeste caught his shoulders before he could fall sideways and gently pushed him back onto her lap.
"Do not move so quickly."
"A week?" Elion repeated, still struggling to believe it.
"You lost a great deal of blood and vitality."
"That is one way of putting it."
Celeste’s expression tightened.
The joy on her face disappeared, replaced by quiet guilt. "I’m sorry, I did not realize what I was doing."
Elion studied her.
"When I awakened, everything felt unclear. My body was burning, my blood felt as though it was tearing me apart, and there was only one thing I could sense clearly."
"Me?"
Celeste nodded. "Your mark." Her fingers moved toward the punctures on his neck, but she stopped before touching them.
"I could feel you nearby. I could feel your blood calling to me."
"That sounds mildly concerning."
"I am being serious."
"So am I. Mostly."
Celeste gave him a displeased look, but it quickly softened.
"I only remember pieces of what happened. Walking out of the holy land, seeing you, and then..."
"Drinking me like an expensive bottle of wine?"
Her gaze lowered. "I nearly killed you."
Elion noticed the tremble in her voice. He raised one hand and placed it against her cheek. Celeste immediately leaned into his palm.
"But you did not."
"I could have."
"You did not."
"Elion—"
"I am alive." He gave her cheek a gentle squeeze. "And judging by how comfortable my pillow is, I would say I recovered under excellent care."
Celeste did not laugh at the joke, and her crimson eyes remained fixed on him, shining faintly with an emotion she was clearly trying to suppress.
"I was afraid."
Elion’s expression softened.
Celeste lowered her gaze toward him.
"You would not wake up. Your breathing remained stable, and every healer said your life was not in danger, but no matter what they did, you continued sleeping."
She swallowed quietly. "I thought perhaps I had damaged something they could not see."
Elion’s thumb brushed beneath her eye. "You stayed here the entire time?" Celeste did not answer, but she did not need to either.
The slightly wrinkled black dress, the untouched trays of food on the distant table, and the faint exhaustion hidden beneath her newly overwhelming presence told him everything.
"Did you stay here the entire week?"
"I left when necessary."
"For how long?"
Celeste remained silent.
Elion raised a brow. "Celeste."
"Several minutes."
He stared at her, but she looked away, blushing. "I did not want you to wake up alone." A warmth spread through Elion’s chest.
He forced himself upright more carefully this time.
Celeste immediately moved to support him, one arm wrapping around his back while the other steadied his shoulder.
Once he was sitting, Elion leaned closer and rested his forehead against hers.
"You worry too much."
"And you do not worry enough."
"Perhaps that is why we suit each other."
Celeste looked into his eyes. "You are not angry?"
"At you?"
"Yes."
Elion thought about it for a moment. "I might be slightly offended that you drank enough blood to put me to sleep for an entire week."
Her expression fell. "But I can probably be persuaded to forgive you."
Celeste narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "What do you want?"
"A kiss would be a good start."
"You only just woke up."
"And?"
"You are still weak."
"I fail to see how that affects my lips."
Celeste stared at him for several seconds before releasing a quiet laugh. She leaned forward and pressed her lips gently against his.
Unlike the desperate kiss she had given him in the throne room, this one was slow and careful. Her cold lips moved against his with a tenderness that made Elion close his eyes and pull her closer.
When they finally separated, Celeste remained close enough for their noses to nearly touch. "Forgiven?" she whispered softly.
Elion pretended to think. "Partially."
Her eyes narrowed. "Partially?"
"I was unconscious for seven days. That should be worth at least seven kisses."
"You are taking advantage of my guilt."
"Of course."
Celeste placed a hand against his chest and pushed him back lightly. "Pervert."
Elion caught her wrist before she could move away and pulled her closer again. "And yet you missed me."
Her expression softened immediately. "More than you know."
The two remained close for a moment before Elion’s gaze drifted downward toward her stomach. His hand followed.
Celeste watched quietly as his palm settled against her abdomen, giving it a gentle caress with his palm.
There was no visible change yet, but he could feel something faintly different through the bond between them. "How is our child?"
Celeste’s hand covered his.
"Safe." A strange sense of relief passed through him. "The healers examined us both after my awakening. The child was not harmed."
"And you?"
"I have never felt stronger."
"That part I noticed." Elion looked back at her white hair. "So, what exactly have you become?"
Celeste’s crimson eyes gleamed. "A Progenitor Vampire."
A wide smile slowly appeared across Elion’s handsome face. "My wife is becoming increasingly terrifying."
