Elion stepped into the office after Maya, looking entirely unbothered by the sarcasm in Marilyn’s voice.

"I would have arrived sooner, but certain circumstances made that rather difficult."

"Certain circumstances?" Marilyn repeated, leaning back in her chair. "You disappeared without a word, missed your duel, and returned more than a week later. I would say those circumstances must have been rather serious."

Her gaze moved slowly over him, taking in the strange mismatched eyes that immediately drew her attention.

Marilyn found herself staring for longer than she intended.

The golden eye was striking enough on its own, but the other resembled a dark night sky filled with countless distant stars.

Looking into it gave her the unsettling feeling that she was gazing into an endless space rather than a human pupil.

She quickly broke eye contact when she felt her mind start to get a bit hazy.

"What happened to your eyes?"

"It is a long story."

Marilyn’s brow twitched.

"That appears to be your answer for everything."

He shrugged.

"It saves time."

"It also avoids answering the question."

Elion smiled and took one of the empty seats in front of her desk without waiting for permission.

"I apologize for missing the duel, but several things happened that were beyond my control. I only hope it is not too late."

Marilyn gave him a faint smile, the wrinkles near the corners of her mouth becoming slightly more visible.

"I ended up granting you a one-week extension. I told your opponent that if you failed to appear before then, she would be allowed to keep her spot."

Elion released a breath of relief.

Marilyn reached beneath her desk and pulled out a greyish-white metallic tag with a silver chain attached to it.

"This will serve as your identification. Your name is engraved upon it, but it is also an artifact of sorts, so you will need a drop of your blood to bind it to yourself."

She passed him a small needle as well.

Elion picked it up and pricked the tip of his index finger before allowing a drop of blood to fall onto the tag.

The tag shimmered faintly, and the blood disappeared from sight before the glow faded as well.

Once that was done, he examined it briefly before putting it away.

"Other than serving as your identification, it also stores information regarding your completed missions, failed missions, contribution points, and allowance. Your allowance can be claimed at any of our branches, a branch of the World Bank, or any other financial institution approved by the Financing Council."

Elion nodded, but Marilyn was not finished.

"If you lose it, there is no need to worry. All your information can be recovered, but you will be charged a non-refundable fee for the replacement."

She leaned back slightly in her chair.

"As for your monthly tasks, you will not be required to complete any until after the Legacy World. The same applies to everyone else who will be joining you. Use this time to prepare."

Elion chuckled.

"Have some confidence in your own people, will you? Who knows? She might actually beat me."

Marilyn smiled kindly.

"I am only being realistic here. I doubt your new eyes are merely cosmetic; you were already unbelievably powerful before, so I am assuming you gained even more power during the week you disappeared. You work quickly. I assume that is what you were doing during the past week?"

Elion smiled.

"Something like that."

Marilyn’s eyes narrowed slightly as she recalled the news she had received concerning a certain incident.

"If you are experiencing any sort of trouble, anything at all, we may be able to assist."

Elion tilted his head to the side.

"Everything is fine, thanks. Why would you assume something was wrong?"

Her eyes narrowed further.

"Is that so?"

’Is he simply unaware of what happened, or does it not bother him at all?’ she wondered.

It could also be that he just didn’t want to speak of it.

After she received news of what had happened in Grimholt, Marilyn had initially believed that Elion had gone into hiding once again, but since he was here, perhaps that was not the case.

Regardless, her curiosity got the better of her, so she decided to probe him a bit.

"Elion, when were you last on Grimholt?"

It was Elion’s turn to narrow his eyes.

Grimholt was a long way from Silvergrove. Revealing when he had last been there would mean exposing the fact that he possessed some form of rapid travel method, since it would normally take close to a month to travel between the two cities on an ordinary flying mount.

But he could still keep the details vague. She would probably assume he owned a particularly fast and powerful mount.

More importantly, he was curious about why she had asked in the first place.

Had one of their people spotted him there?

He had not exactly made any sort of effort to hide himself, but the only person he had properly interacted with had been Mira’s father and his entourage.

However, if Marilyn somehow already knew that he had visited Grimholt recently, then lying and claiming he had not been there would accomplish nothing.

It was probably safer to assume that the alliance had already learned that a duke had branded him a heretic.

Since Marilyn had still welcomed him and handed over his identification, he had little reason to worry, even if that turned out to be the case.

"I traveled to Grimholt the same day I left Silvergrove, so a little over a week ago," Elion answered. "I spent slightly more than a day there before making a quick return."

Elion could not help but wonder whether something had happened that he was unaware of.

Marilyn put on a thoughtful expression.

"Is that so?"

Perhaps he truly did not know.

"Well," she began, "as required when bringing in a new recruit, I had someone perform a background check on you. In doing so, we came across the records of your time at the flying academy and, in turn, your supposed status as a heretic after things went wrong during the tournament."

She raised a hand before he could speak.

"Before you ask, you have nothing to worry about. I have already been advised not to take the accusations against you seriously. There is clearly foul play and oppression from a ducal house involved here, and if necessary, the alliance has no problem providing you with proper protection or pleading your case in court should the situation come to that, since you were clearly wrongfully accused."

She smiled.

"As you can see, Master Smith is willing to go to great lengths to secure your services, but that is only natural. We are a young institution that places great importance on young talent. I am certain he will be pleased as long as you provide a suitable return on his investment."

Elion smiled pleasantly.

This was well within his expectations, but that did not seem to be all, so he waited for her to reach the crux of the matter.

"With that being said, we also received word that Duke Dawncrest has been actively searching for you, going as far as placing a bounty on your head."
