It had been some time since they had all been able to sit together without an immediate danger hanging over their heads.
Even Zenith appeared fascinated by the simple experience, occasionally asking questions about unfamiliar dishes and demanding to taste anything Elion ordered.
And just like that, it wasn’t long before they wrapped up dinner.
What he never would have expected, however, was to find Cain and Vivian kowtowing outside the establishment when they eventually left.
Naturally, Zenith, Mira, and Zenovia recognised them immediately, but when Elion ignored the pair and simply stepped around them, they chose to do the same, even though the others appeared confused.
"Young Master Elion!" Vivian called out loudly without lifting her head. "We understand that we were disrespectful, but please spare us a moment of your time!"
Elion stopped after taking only a few steps.
Their unusual display had already drawn plenty of attention from the people entering and leaving the establishment.
More than a few patrons had slowed down to watch, confused by the sight of two clearly powerful individuals kneeling before a young man who did not even appear to have reached his twenties.
Elion glanced over his shoulder.
Vivian remained perfectly still, but the slight trembling of her fingers revealed how nervous she was.
Cain was kneeling beside her as well, though his posture was considerably stiffer, and he was trembling uncontrollably, as if his body could not bear to be in Elion’s presence.
"What could you possibly have to say to me?" Elion asked.
Vivian finally raised her head slightly, though she did not dare stand.
"We acted without understanding the difference between us."
Cain’s expression tightened at her words, but he did not argue.
"We allowed our pride to cloud our judgement," she continued. "Cain’s behaviour was especially inexcusable, but I was responsible for keeping him under control. His disrespect was therefore also my failure."
Cain glanced towards her.
"Vivian..."
"Be quiet," she hissed without looking at him.
His mouth snapped shut.
Aria glanced between the kneeling pair and Elion.
"What exactly did they do?"
"They are... Old accomplices of Zenovia’s, and the man could not keep his eyes to himself," Mira explained.
Vivian lowered her head again.
"We have no excuse for what happened."
Elion had no intention of remaining there any longer than necessary, and he certainly was not going to listen to whatever they wanted to say.
They had already been given their chance to speak, and they had wasted it by demanding that he respect his elders.
’What elders?’ He snorted inwardly. ’How laughable.’
"Let us go." He gestured towards the others and started walking again.
Vivian gritted her teeth and quickly rose to her feet.
"Wait! Our master told us to inform you that we may possess something you need."
Elion did not stop walking.
Vivian bit her lip hard enough to draw blood as she realised that she would have to reveal far more than she had intended just to capture his attention.
"He said he knows where one of the nine remaining fragments is!" she blurted out quickly.
Elion immediately stopped in his tracks and looked back at the beautiful assassin with narrowed eyes.
"Fragments of what?" he asked.
He already had an idea of what she was referring to, but he wanted to be certain.
After all, how could this person she spoke of possibly know not only about Kurogoroshi, but also about its fragments?
"Of a weapon..." Vivian responded swiftly, causing Elion’s eyes to narrow even further.
That was far too accurate for his liking, and he would be lying if he claimed he was not interested in whatever they had to say now.
"Elion?"
Seeing the frown upon his face, Mira had become curious, much like everyone else.
He had been moments away from pulling everyone into the Ark before the pair appeared, and considering the scene they were causing in front of the establishment, it would probably be better to bring them along as well.
They were relatively harmless, and if either of them attempted anything foolish, they would both be dead before they even realised what was happening.
"We will discuss this somewhere more private," Elion said.
Vivian released a quiet breath of relief.
"Of course."
Cain slowly rose to his feet beside her, brushing the dust from his clothes while deliberately avoiding meeting the eyes of any of Elion’s companions.
Just being around Elion was setting him off; who knew what Elion would do if he so much as glanced at any of the women with him. He didn’t have a death wish; he valued his life greatly.
Elion did not bother explaining what he was about to do.
With a single thought, an invisible force enveloped everyone standing around him.
Vivian’s instincts flared violently.
Her hand immediately moved towards the dagger hidden beneath her cloak, but before her fingers could touch the handle, the street, the establishment, and the curious spectators surrounding them all disappeared.
The sudden change happened so quickly that neither assassin had time to react.
One moment, they had been standing beneath the evening lights of Silvergrove.
The next, they found themselves inside an enormous, lavish hall filled with warm golden light.
Cain stumbled and nearly fell, while Vivian immediately drew her dagger and spun around, searching for the threat that had transported them.
The others appeared completely unbothered.
Yaana was already looking around excitedly, while Uta stood beside her with an equally stunned expression.
Maya and Zenovia were more restrained, though their widened eyes revealed that this was also their first time entering the artifact.
"Where are we?" Vivian demanded.
Elion gave the dagger in her hand a casual look.
"Put the dagger away. And we are inside my artifact."
Her eyes narrowed, but she did as she was told.
"What kind of artifact can transport so many people without any warning?"
"You are asking too many questions; you don’t have the luxury of doing so right now," Elion warned. "Now tell me, this master of yours... what does he want from me, and how does he know what I am searching for?"
He pointed towards his mismatched eyes.
"Do not bother lying or deliberately leaving out any relevant details. I will know."
Vivian gulped.
Despite how ridiculous the claim sounded, she had a feeling that he was being completely truthful.
However, the ability to distinguish truth from lies?
Was that not somewhat similar to one of the abilities their master possessed?
’Is that why he wants to recruit him?’
It was certainly possible.
