Elion activated the appraisal ability of his eyes as he studied the black-and-gold chalice in the man’s hand.
The moment his gaze settled upon it, information surfaced within his vision.
[Grail of Betrayal]
[Description: A dead Ancient relic that once held the blood of a deity. After falling into the hands of a mortal, he drank from it, saving himself from an otherwise certain death, as well as gaining enlightenment to the answer he and many others had been seeking for eons: the truth and origin of their world. Years of neglect have led to the Grail losing its divine attributes.]
[Artefact Rank: ???]
[Enchantments: N/A]
Elion’s expression immediately changed.
’That’s odd.’ His brows furrowed.
The question marks were the things he dreaded seeing the most.
Whenever his eyes or system failed to determine something’s rank, it usually meant he had stumbled across yet another mystery that was far beyond his current understanding.
’It doesn’t have any enchantments either.’
Elion’s gaze lingered on the chalice.
So the damned thing was nothing more than a fancy drinking cup now?
Apparently, years of neglect had stripped away whatever divine power it had once possessed, leaving behind nothing but a dead relic.
The burly escort noticed Elion’s frown.
His face immediately paled.
’Is he not pleased with it after all!?’ His heart sank.
This was already the most valuable treasure of their clan that he had on hand.
If even this failed to satisfy the mysterious expert before them, then what exactly were they supposed to offer?
Elion barely noticed the man’s reaction. His attention remained fixed on the Grail.
He had to admit, the description had caught his interest.
Not because of the deity’s blood, and not even because of its supposed ancient origins.
It was the wording.
’The truth and origin of their world.’
Elion read the description again, then a third time.
His frown deepened.
There was something about those words that bothered him, or perhaps...
Intrigued him.
Why would drinking from a relic allow a mortal to understand the truth and origin of the world?
And what exactly had that mortal discovered?
More importantly, if the Grail had truly lost all of its divine attributes, then why could his eyes still recognise it as an Ancient relic?
Elion’s gaze shifted toward the line concerning its enchantments.
[N/A]
He stared at it.
Then at the chalice.
Then back at the appraisal.
’Something doesn’t add up.’
His instincts were telling him that the Grail wasn’t as useless as the appraisal suggested. But if its divine attributes were truly gone, then what remained?
The answer was nowhere in the description. Elion’s gaze shifted back toward the trembling escort.
The man was practically shaking in place as if awaiting judgement. That raised an even bigger question.
Why was someone from the Dragonborn Clan carrying around a seemingly useless clan treasure in the first place?
Was it merely a coincidence?
Or had he deliberately brought it along in preparation for a situation exactly like this?
If it was the latter, then that said quite a lot about the Dragonborn Clan.
Elion reached out and took the chalice from the man’s hands, turning it over slowly as he examined its black-and-gold surface.
’Okay, let’s see if True Appraisal or World Threads can help me out here.’
World Threads was an ability he had yet to properly test, and there was always Heavenly Insight as well.
If his ordinary appraisal could not uncover the Grail’s secrets, perhaps one of those abilities would be able to perceive something hidden beneath the surface.
He focused his eyes.
The moment his perception attempted to peer into the depths of the chalice....
Badum!
Pain exploded through his head, and Elion’s entire body stiffened. It wasn’t ordinary pain.
It was as though something had driven a heated spike directly through his skull and into his brain, followed by a violent pulse that shook his consciousness itself.
His vision fractured.
The edges of his eyes strained visibly as thin red veins suddenly bulged beneath his skin, extending from the corners of his eyes toward his cheeks.
For one terrifying second, everything went completely black. Elion immediately withdrew his perception.
"Mmmmmhhmm..."
He suppressed a groan through clenched teeth as his entire head trembled.
His trembling lips pursed tightly as he fought against the lingering pain, while his back hunched instinctively.
The chalice nearly slipped from his fingers, and the burly escort’s eyes widened. His expression turned a darker shade.
’He’s furious!’
The man immediately slammed his forehead against the ground with a resounding boom.
"Mercy!" His voice trembled as it echoed across the courtyard. "Please have mercy!"
Elion barely heard him.
The others, however, were already frowning. Why was Elion reacting like this?
He had just been handed a treasure, yet now he looked as though he had suffered some sort of attack.
Mira’s brows furrowed.
"What happened?"
Zenovia looked toward the chalice suspiciously. Even Paul seemed confused, but Zenith noticed something the others hadn’t.
Something was wrong with Elion.
Her figure flickered, and the next instant, she appeared directly beside him.
"What’s wrong?"
She placed a palm against his cheek.
Her expression immediately became serious when she felt the tremors running through his body.
Darkness mana quietly seeped from her hand.
Unlike the destructive darkness she usually wielded, this energy was gentle and soothing, spreading through Elion’s body and easing the pain that had been assaulting his mind.
Her gaze then shifted toward the kneeling elder in white robes.
As far as Zenith was concerned, his life was forfeit.
It was obvious what had happened.
The old man had handed the object to Elion, knowing that it was dangerous, hoping it would somehow harm him and allow him to regain control of the situation.
Zenith’s eyes became cold.
The moment she finished easing Elion’s pain, she simply raised her hand and flicked her index finger.
Whoosh!
The man’s head separated cleanly from his shoulders.
His body remained kneeling for a brief moment before collapsing forward, while his severed head rolled across the courtyard with a heavy thud.
Crimson blood erupted from the headless neck, splattering across the stone and painting the courtyard red.
Several people watching instinctively sucked in a sharp breath, while blocking several young ones within the crowd from seeing the gruesome sight.
Adonis and the remaining escorts stared in horror, and then one of them screamed.
"RUN!"
That was all it took: The group scrambled to their feet and bolted toward the distant gates.
They didn’t bother maintaining their dignity.
They simply ran as fast as their legs could carry them, stumbling over one another like terrified chickens fleeing a butcher.
The sight was almost comical.
Elion slowly exhaled as the trembling in his head finally began to subside. He rubbed his temple.
’Madness, my ass.’ His expression twisted slightly when he remembered the warning from the system. ’That’s just pure pain!’
[...]
The system remained silent.
It seemed that no matter how much pain he experienced, there was simply no getting used to it.
Having a high pain tolerance did not equal immunity, after all.
Elion briefly looked down at the body lying in front of them, clicking his tongue when he noticed that some of the man’s blood had splattered across his boots.
’Great.’
He sighed before looking back toward Zenith.
"Nothing serious," he assured her. "I tried using my eyes to see something, but it backfired; the artefact seems to be protected by something - well, at least that’s what I think."
Zenith’s lips formed a small "O" as the realization dawned on her.
She glanced toward the headless body, then back toward Elion.
She seemed to realize that perhaps she had slaughtered the man without knowing the actual circumstances.
Elion smiled.
"Thanks for worrying, though." He wrapped an arm around her slim waist and pulled her gently against him.
