You have gained a new spell!
Teleport (Copper)
Allows you to transport yourself across vast distances by fusing your soul into the space between your current location to the location you desire. Requires a receiver that is connected to your soul, and for each use, the spell enters into a cooldown before it can be activated again.
Mana Cost: 150
Cooldown period: 3 hours each use.
This was the entire reason why he kept experimenting with the concept of teleportation. He knew that as long as he tried it out once, the system would recognize his effort and grant him a spell that would instantly help him learn how to use the spell effectively.
Even now, he couldn’t believe how little the mana cost actually was according to the spell. He spent quite a bit, using all his other spells just to be able to pull this feat off. He also spent quite a bit of mana on the actual spell itself, way more than what the system notified.
Though he was surprised to find that it had a cooldown unlike his other spells. He hoped that he could easily teleport around in battle and make things even easier for himself, but it looks like he needed to fully understand the spell some more in order to even have the chance to shorten or even get rid of the cooldown entirely.
Then again, his heart hammered against his chest when he teleported throughout the entire experiment. He easily imagined himself tearing himself apart when he kept messing with the concept of space so much through his spell. Perhaps the system also understood that even through his power of connecting with harmony, it wasn’t enough to fully utilize the space around him.
Strangely enough, he had a feeling that he could actually figure out a way to get rid of the cooldown, but it’s going to require loads of experimentation that needed way more than just a few days. He also needed to learn a different way to use teleportation outside of what the dungeon provided. It might be possible that the dungeon’s limitation of only transporting to the fifth floor after they defeated the guardian was the one responsible for the cooldown added to his new spell in the first place.
That was a bit of conjecture on his part, but his mind was so wrapped around magic control and theory crafting that he really had no other idea for it. Still, he succeeded in creating his own teleportation spell.
“D-Did you just teleport?” Haley asked, her finger rising to point at Aidan, then pointing at where he used to be. “You were just there, and then suddenly you’re here…”
“Seriously, you’re just full of surprises,” Van said, sounding less excited and more exasperated. “Haley, is it really that hard to believe? It’s Aidan we’re talking about.”
“I-I know that, but still!” Haley whined.
While the siblings were reacting quite well to his new spell, the one who surprised him the most was Nina. Her soul was practically roaring in all sorts of emotions, ranging from shock, to surprise, to anticipation, and then to excitement.
That normally wouldn’t surprise him considering that she only expressed such emotions through her soul. What did surprise him was that it was now showing on her face.
Nina was certainly struggling, but her lips kept twisting slightly, almost trembling as if she was trying to hold back her expression from changing. It didn’t seem like she was trying to do so to look composed in front of them, but more like something she had instinctually trained herself to do for a long time now. Considering that playing high-stakes maneuvers like Nina did require some heavy poker-face skills, it looked like Aidan nearly broke her normally fortified calm facade.
Finally, in a single moment, her face returned to normal, and she let out a slight cough that caught their attention. “Good work, Aidan. It looks like this project of yours turned out to be a success. Tell me, how does your spell work? I can see the description, but I want to know your thoughts on it. For example, can you bring anyone else with it?”
It was clear to Aidan that Nina had thought up perhaps hundreds of plans to use his new Teleport spell for her own ends. It wasn’t like he planned on making the spell specifically for her, as it was something he had planned for a while now for himself. Though he wasn’t against using it for her ends as well, so he gladly explained.
“I think so, but I need to experiment a little more,” Aidan added truthfully. “And since I didn’t appear naked, it looks like I can grab anything with me and bring it along.”
“In other words, teleporting with spatial bags won’t bring any issues,” Nina said, looking at the bag itself strapped to his hip.
He actually just realized that he was wearing a spatial bag while he teleported, completely forgetting that perhaps spatial bags might interfere with any spell-casting relating to space magic itself. He wondered if perhaps he was just lucky, as that could’ve easily messed something up when he created his framework for making the spell.
Then again, he always had his spatial bag whenever he teleported inside the dungeon, and since that teleportation didn’t do anything strange even with his spatial bag, that meant that his own Teleport spell, inspired by the dungeon, was also unaffected by having a spatial bag with him.
“Yep,” Aidan agreed.
“Now this… is good,” Nina said, almost to herself, though at this point, everyone heard what she said as her grin rose. It was a much more controlled smile, something that Nina seemed more than happy to show off.
“Van, I’m getting goosebumps,” Haley said, whispering to her brother. “That smile is creeping me out.”
“Hey, don’t say it so loud!” Van hissed. “She could hear you!”
“I already heard it, but I don’t blame you,” Nina said, pretty much scaring the siblings with her words as she continued smiling. “Aidan here just made things a lot easier for me to manage the city and the rest of my plans. Are there any other limitations I should be aware of?”
“As far as I know, there won’t be any problems. Upgrading it might be a bitch to do though, considering it has a cooldown.”
“A spell that has a cooldown, that’s new to me,” Van said.
“It looks like it’s on a cooldown right now, so in the next three hours, I wanna see how far I can really teleport. So until then, how about we figure out some plans for it?”
“Fine by me,” Nina said, eagerly enjoying the idea.
“Looks like you got a lot more work coming up for you, Aidan,” Haley shrugged. “Sucks to be you.”
“Eh, it’s worth it,” Aidan grinned. “Not every day you can twist reality whenever you want.”
He was more than up for figuring out the ins and outs of his new spell, especially as they discussed further ways of what to do with their plans.
…..
Days passed, marking the third week since the attack. There was only a week left for Aidan’s stats to return to normal, and he just couldn’t wait for it. While he experimented with his new spell more than enough times, considering that his stats were shot, he wasn’t able to do much else outside of teleportation. What he did was just continue training with his sword while helping the others learn how to use magic.
And today was the day when the group was finally heading out of Forontia for the first time. Aidan took a step back, marveling at his newest creation for their ride to Palestorm.
It was a carriage that looked simple on the surface, but it had various upgrades compared to the other carriages he had seen before. This one in particular allowed for maximum comfort and stable driving, and it was also lighter than how it looked despite being the size of a large SUV that could carry half a dozen or so. This was all done with the help of his Craft.
Of course, at one point, he did plan on outright making a car from his old world, with the motor and engine and all. However, he found several problems that should’ve been obvious to anyone from both worlds. One thing was that he had no knowledge on how a car motor works, and even if he could make a car, it didn’t mean it would work then and there.
It required a battery and also gasoline to make it drivable, and the added weight necessary to make the car would only make it more complicated. Sure he could go ahead and try to make the gasoline needed, but that still wouldn’t help him make a car battery. He had a feeling that just crafting lightning wouldn’t exactly charge the damn thing.
It would take too much time, too many materials, and those materials would also have to be high quality and full of immense energy just to make the first working car–and it wouldn’t even be a decent one at that. Perhaps if he had technician experience, it could work, but he was just a simple driver who didn’t know jack shit about his car and would only just leave it at a nearby car shop for them to fix the problem instead.
It kinda soured his mood when he realized that, but creating a working carriage fixed it somewhat, leaving him proud and expectant of praise soon coming for him.
“Wow, it looks pretty nice,” Haley praised, stroking Aidan’s bruised ego as she marveled at the carriage.
“The seats are comfy too,” Van said, stepping out of the back of the carriage after inspecting it for himself. “You can make some decent coin selling these things.”
“I could, couldn’t I?” Aidan said, grinning with crossed arms. The siblings could tell he was loving the praise, though they didn’t know the reason why he sought it. Rather, he put those souring thoughts down since there was no point to them. “Anyways, Nina’s coming soon, so we just gotta wait for her.”
They were currently outside the city, the state of the entrance to Forontia restored back to how it once was. There were still signs of destruction there, some of the walls scratched up from the constant attacks done to it, but it still held up firmly.
Eventually their boss arrived, bringing in a rather surprising creature that Aidan hadn’t seen before. Or well, he had seen it before–he just never imagined seeing it here.
“Is that a… capybara?” Aidan asked, head hanging back in pure shock as Nina held the reins for the larger than life capybara waltzing in beside her.
It stood about as tall as a horse, and it was definitely bulky, though contrary to how it looked, Aidan noticed the muscles packed within that gut as the capybara creature raised its nose into the air to sniff. Nina, as well as Haley, both rubbed the fur across its neck and torso, the capybara clearly enjoying the affection.
“Close, it’s called a Capyra,” Nina said, answering Aidan’s question. She must have thought that Aidan had pronounced the name wrong, which he couldn’t even argue against. “A tame creature known for efficiently carrying heavy cargo. They’re also very intelligent and can even fight, though this particular Capyra is better at transportation than fighting.”
“Aww, how can anyone make this little cutie fight anyways?” Haley said, clearly enjoying the Capyra for herself as she made kissy faces while rubbing the beast’s cheeks, much to its own enjoyment of being scratched.
Aidan couldn’t help but scan the creature, surprised that it had its own level.
Earthwell Capyra, Level 31.
He wondered if it was a monster and, if he killed it, whether he could gain experience from it. Though that would instantly make him a hated entity among the group here, as Aidan did admit that it was definitely cute. He moved ahead and brushed the Capyra’s head, making it shuffle and shake its head in anxiousness.
The Capyra’s soul, unlike most other monsters and humans, was simplistic but very telling, showing that it was getting anxious from the crowd swarming on him. Aidan stepped back, and the Capyra quickly relaxed as it enjoyed the scratchies.
“Looks like it needs some time to get used to us,” Aidan said.
“Oh, I’m surprised you knew about that,” Nina said. “The tamer who rented him to me also said something along those lines. Was that due to your sense?”
“Yep,” Aidan nodded. “Though it does like getting scratched. That much is pretty obvious.”
“Then you get all the scratchies in the world~” Haley cooed, going full force into scratching the Capyra.
The group eventually prepared themselves for the trip, with Aidan, Haley, and Nina at the back while Van held the reins for the Capyra at the front. With a simple flick of the reins, the Capyra quickly sprinted forward, bringing the carriage along with ease.
The drive through the forest was quick and painless, with Aidan peering from the inside of the carriage through the small opening where he could talk to Van easily enough.
“You good driving for a while?” Aidan asked.
“Yeah, it’s fine,” Van answered back, his eyes still on the road. The wind was getting stronger the faster they ran, so he had to shout to reach Aidan’s ears. “This carriage runs like a dream! I drove some before, but I never had any that drove this smoothly!”
“I know, right?!” Haley shouted from behind him. She jumped on the cushioned seat with Nina sitting across from her, thumping the plush with her hands. “It feels like something made for royalty! I feel like I’m committing a crime for not paying for this luxury.”
Aidan nodded with pride. He knew carriages were known for being awkward drives, their main feature being to only bring a group of people across long distances rather than assuring them of comfort and speed. The carriage was made using the parts Aidan recognized that could help with the harsh impact of wheels running on unsettled ground, and the light weight of the entire carriage only made it easier for the Capyra to pull them faster, making for a faster ride.
“At this rate, we’ll reach Palestorm sooner than expected,” Nina said, sounding just as eager even if she didn’t show it on her face. “Though it could use a bit more work on the design.”
“Hey, don’t ask for a miracle,” Aidan quickly added. “I can make shit, but I can’t make shit pretty.”
“Truly a shame,” Nina simply answered back. Now Aidan was starting to feel sour again at that.
He had a hard time making things pretty with his imagination, alright?
