Chapter 148: Tomorrow Will Be Different

Roxanne’s heart thudded against her ribs like a trapped bird, the frantic rhythm echoing in her ears. Did she know? Or was Cara simply trying to provoke her? She searched Cara’s face, looking for some clue.

Margaret’s eyes narrowed into slits as she rounded on Cara before Richard or Roxanne could say a single word. "What exactly are you congratulating her for, Cara?"

Cara flicked a quick glance at Margaret. For a brief second, a cruel smirk touched the corner of her lips, but it vanished before Roxanne could point it out. In the next breath, Cara’s face crumpled into a mask of pure devastation.

"What is there not to congratulate her for?" Cara sobbed out, tears springing to her eyes and spilling over her dark lashes. She wiped her cheeks with her trembling hand. "She is taking my man away from me!"

The tears streamed down her cheeks, but Roxanne felt only a sharp anger. It was all a performance. She knows everything.

"I was never yours, Cara," Richard said, his deep voice cutting through the silent foyer. He raised his arm, pointing a steady finger toward the front door. "Leave my home, and stop spreading these lies."

Cara turned to Margaret, her chest heaving as she wiped her wet cheek with the back of her hand. "Do you hear how he speaks to me, Margaret? Instead of throwing this woman out for what she is doing to your son, you treat me like an outsider!"

Margaret let out an exhausted breath. "We have had enough drama for one night. We are leaving right now, Cara. We can handle this tomorrow."

Cara shook her head, sniffling softly as her shoulders slumped. "I cannot believe this is happening."

Roxanne let out a quiet breath, a knowing smile touching her lips as she watched the dramatic display.

Cara’s fake sorrow turned into instant, boiling rage as her gaze snapped directly to Roxanne. "And what are you smiling at? Do you actually think you have won?"

Roxanne held her ground, her fingers slipping into Richard’s warm palm. His grip was firm. "You seem to be the only person in this room who does not understand what is happening here."

Cara let out a bitter laugh that rang hollow against the marble floor. "Is that so? What I know for sure is that you will leave this house, whether you like it or not."

Roxanne shook her head gently, her voice smooth and steady. "It is clear you have not gotten the message yet. So let me make it plain for you: I am the lady of this house now. You should get used to it, because that is not changing anytime soon."

Cara raised a hand, taking a step across the floor.

"Cara! We are leaving. Now!" Margaret’s stern command echoed off the ceiling from the open doorway. She glared at Cara without stepping back inside. "If I walk out this door, you will deal with whatever comes next alone."

Cara’s nostrils flared as she glared at Margaret. "Margaret, no! I—"

Margaret turned her back and walked out into the cool evening air, the click of her heels fading down the stone steps.

Cara turned back to Roxanne. Her eyes drifted down to Roxanne’s belly area, lingering there for a long, uncomfortable beat before she looked up with a dark smirk.

"You are throwing me out today, Richard, but you will wish you hadn’t tomorrow," she spat softly, her voice laced with venom. "Enjoy tonight, Roxanne. Tomorrow will be very different."

Roxanne met her glare without flinching, feeling the steady heat of Richard standing beside her. "I will be waiting."

Richard remained silent, his hand wrapping securely around Roxanne’s fingers. Together, they stood side by side in the quiet foyer, watching as Cara turned on her heel and slammed the front door behind her with a loud bang.

The sudden silence in the foyer felt overwhelming.

Roxanne kept her eyes fixed on the door, her pulse still humming in her ears like a low buzz. "Cara knows something," she murmured softly.

Richard nodded, his thumb rubbing a comforting circle over the back of her hand. "There is only one way to find out if she was the person listening at the terrace door."

Roxanne looked up at him, her brows pulling together in confusion. "What do you mean?"

Without answering, Richard pulled his phone from his pocket, unlocked the screen, and held it out for her to see. Roxanne’s eyes widened in surprise.

"We have cameras covering the terrace corridor. So, now we find out who was at that door," Richard said, his tone dark. He turned toward the hallway where the butler stood waiting near the wall. "John, get the security feed pulled up in the control room."

John gave a prompt nod. "Right away, sir."

Richard kept his fingers intertwined with Roxanne’s, leading her down the lower hallway toward the back of the house.

The cool air from the basement stairs brushed against her skin as they descended. When they stepped inside the security suite, the air-conditioned room hummed softly, lit by a wall of high-definition monitors displaying every angle of the mansion.

"It is ready on the main screen, sir," John said, stepping back from the glowing control panel.

"Play it," Richard ordered.

John pressed a key on the keyboard, and the video footage filled the central display.

The camera angle showed the quiet living room outside the private terrace. A second later, Emily’s nervous silhouette appeared on the screen, standing by the door for a long time before she panicked and bolted down the hall toward the stairs.

Roxanne let out a tired breath as she watched the girl rush out of sight on the monitor. "Did she really forget there are cameras?"

Richard’s jaw set into a hard line, his eyes burning with anger. "She is finished here. Fire her immediately, John."

"Wait, Richard," Roxanne said, stepping closer to the screen and pointing her finger at the bottom right corner. "Look there. Who is she talking to in the living room?"

Richard leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as he studied the dimly lit corner shown on the screen. He went entirely still, the color in his face shifting. He looked over at Roxanne, his expression grim and dark.

"Cara," they said together.

Roxanne felt a fresh wave of cold tension settle deep in her stomach. "So she knows about the baby," she said, her pulse drumming in her ears. "And she acted completely oblivious right to our faces."

Richard’s chest rose and fell in controlled breaths. He turned toward his butler, his voice like iron. "John, bring Emily in here. Right now."
