The cool air inside the security room hummed with the quiet buzz of glowing monitors.
Roxanne sat beside Richard, their legs crossed, their eyes fixed on the door. The lock clicked, and Emily stepped inside.
She swallowed hard, her skin pale under the harsh fluorescent light. Her hands clasped tightly in front of her white apron, fingers twisting as she hovered near the doorway.
"Sir? You called for me," Emily whispered, her voice trembling.
Richard leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. His dark gaze was stern, devoid of warmth. "What were you doing standing outside my private living room, eavesdropping on my conversation on the terrace?"
Emily’s eyes went wide. "Me? Sir, I didn’t—"
"Before you complete that lie, look at the screen," Richard cut in, his low voice smooth and unyielding.
Emily turned toward the monitor. On the display, a video showed her pressing her ear flush against the wood of the terrace door. All the color drained from her face instantly. Her throat bobbed in a hard swallow, her gaze locked onto her own reflection in horror.
"I am sorry," Emily gasped, her hands clutching together as she looked toward Roxanne. "I never meant to. Please, ma’am, explain to him!"
Roxanne let out a slow breath. Disappointment settled in her chest, sharp and cold. "I really thought we could be friends, Emily. I was hopeful."
"I am so sorry, ma’am. Please forgive me, sir," Emily pleaded, her voice cracking.
"Sorry cannot fix this," Roxanne said, her tone quiet but firm. She shifted in her seat, feeling Richard’s fingers lightly graze her wrist in a quiet show of support. "I only want to know one thing. Did Cara put you up to this? Who else did you tell about what you heard?"
"No, Miss Cara did not." Emily glanced back at the screen, her eyes darting side to side as if searching for an escape. She looked at Richard’s icy expression, then back to Roxanne. "I told Tina. My colleague."
"And is she the only one?" Richard asked, his deep voice dropping an octave, daring her to lie.
Emily shuddered, tears brimming in her eyes as she shook her head. "No."
Roxanne’s heart skipped a beat. A tight knot twisted in her stomach. "Who else did you tell?" she asked gently, though her pulse drummed in her ears. "Lying will not help you now."
"I had no idea she was standing there!" Emily burst out, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "Miss Cara threatened me. I was terrified. I really did not mean to do it!"
"Calm down, Emily," Roxanne said softly, forcing her breath to remain steady despite the tension thick in the air. "What exactly did you tell her?"
Emily looked from Richard’s unyielding stance to Roxanne’s steady face. "Everything," she whispered. "I told her everything I heard."
Roxanne and Richard exchanged a swift, dark glance.
"What exact words did you say to her?" Roxanne pressed, hoping against hope that her worst fear remained unspoken.
Emily wiped her wet nose with the back of her trembling hand. "That you are—" She choked on a breath, her voice barely audible. "That you are having a baby, and that no one must find out."
Richard pressed his palm to his forehead, closing his eyes as a frustrated sigh escaped his lips.
Roxanne kept her gaze locked on the maid, her face composed even as her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. "I see. And what did Cara say to you after that?"
"Nothing," Emily sobbed, shaking her head. "She said nothing."
Roxanne looked at Richard, giving him a solemn nod. The damage was done.
Richard straightened up in his chair and looked cold-eyed at the crying girl. "You may leave. John, come inside."
The door opened instantly, and John stepped into the room, bowing his head slightly. "Yes, sir."
"Take her out," Richard ordered.
John turned to Emily, holding the door wide.
Emily’s face crumpled completely. "What will happen to me now, sir?" she wept, backing away slowly. "Please do not fire me! I really need this job!"
Roxanne looked at her, feeling a mix of sadness and quiet resolve. "You betrayed the people who trusted you and gave you a home, Emily. You did it to satisfy someone who cares nothing about you. This is a hard lesson, but you have to learn it."
"I am so sorry, ma’am," Emily cried, her voice trailing into the hallway.
"I want her off the property immediately, John," Richard added, his command cutting cleanly through her weeping. "Calculate whatever pay she is owed. She cannot stay here. I do not trust her."
"Understood, sir," John said, guiding the weeping girl down the hall until her pleas faded into silence.
When the door clicked shut, a suffocating quiet fell over the room. The hum of the cooling fans filled the space.
Roxanne stared at Cara’s frozen image, remembering the way the woman had stared at her stomach before walking out the front door. A chill ran down her spine, but she squared her shoulders, leaning lightly into Richard’s side.
She turned to Richard, letting out a sigh. "To what extent do you think Cara will go with this?" she asked, looking up into his dark eyes.
Richard didn’t answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on Cara’s face. Then his expression changed suddenly.
Roxanne caught it, and her heart skipped. "Richard?" Her brows furrowed.
"I do not even want to imagine," Richard murmured under his breath, pulling his phone from his pocket. Then he looked at her. "She doesn’t need to convince anyone you’re carrying my child."
Roxanne frowned. ’I don’t understand," she said, her pulse spiking in her ears now.
Richard’s jaw tightened, and his shoulders lumped slightly. "She only needs to convince the world that you were already pregnant before you left your husband."
Roxanne’s blood ran cold. Her gaze snapped to Cara’s image on the monitor. Oh, God. Her pulse was pounding in her ears.
And suddenly, the DNA test was no longer the biggest problem.
