Meanwhile, inside the quiet executive parking lot at Vance Enterprises, Roxanne sat behind the wheel of her car. The cool air from the vents blew softly against her skin as her eyes remained fixed on the glowing screen of her phone. She stared directly at the breaking news headline that had just popped up across her feed.
Breaking News. More proof has emerged in the case of Cara Whitewater. Paternity tests prove that Billionaire Vance is the father. What will he say?
A faint smile touched Roxanne’s lips. This was the first move in her strategy. Even as she read the sensational words, a quiet hope stirred inside her that everything would unfold just as she had mapped out in her mind.
She swiped away from the article and opened her social media app. Taking a slow breath to steady her racing heart, she typed a brief phrase onto her public page: #LetTheTruthPrevail
Less than a minute after she hit send, her notifications exploded. Thousands of users began commenting, sharing, and debating her sudden statement. Roxanne scrolled through the flood of comments, a small smile tugging at her lips.
Roxanne shook her head, a small smile playing on her face. "You should have accepted my offer, Cara," she murmured into the quiet cabin of the car. "Now we have to do this the hard way."
Her brows pulled together as a specific comment caught her attention. "Enough words. Show us your pregnancy test and paternity test," she read aloud, her voice echoing softly against the leather interior.
Roxanne chuckled, shaking her head again. "You all have no idea what is coming," she whispered. She exhaled a sharp breath, tapped the power button, and watched the screen go dark.
Grabbing her leather handbag, she opened the car door and stepped out onto the polished concrete floor. She walked toward the glass elevators, her heels tapping rhythmic beats against the ground.
Just as she reached out to press the call button, her phone vibrated violently in her palm. She raised the screen and saw Margaret’s name flashing across it.
Roxanne paused, her brows tightening in immediate suspicion. "What does she want now?" she murmured. She shook her head and hit the power button to decline the call. "She probably wants to lecture me about my post. The last thing I need right now is her negative energy."
She pressed the elevator button and waited as the steel doors slid open. Stepping inside the quiet cab, her mind began to race. Margaret was definitely going to be furious. Worse, Richard might have already seen the social media stir as well.
"Oh no," she muttered to herself as the elevator began to ascend. "I need to talk to him immediately." She pressed the button for the ninth floor, watching the digital floor numbers light up one by one.
Within seconds, the doors glided open onto the executive floor.
Roxanne stepped out onto the carpeted hallway and walked briskly toward Richard’s corner office. She paused at the reception desk, looking at his assistant.
"Is he in, Libby?" she asked, offering a quick, polite smile.
Libby shook her head softly. "No, Roxanne," she replied, looking up from her monitor. "He has been out of the building for a while now."
Roxanne furrowed her brows in surprise. Out? Then she remembered that he had mentioned going to an important meeting earlier. Unlocking her phone, she dialed his direct line and raised the device to her ear, listening to the steady ringing sound.
"Hello, Richard," she said the moment the line connected. "Will you be back soon?"
"I am here already," Richard’s smooth voice came through the speaker. "I am just pulling into the lower parking lot now. Go wait inside my office, and I will be up in a minute."
Roxanne nodded with relief. "Alright then. I will wait for you inside," she said, ending the call. She walked straight into his spacious office, crossing the room to sit in one of the armchairs facing his executive desk.
A few minutes later, the door swung open, and Richard stepped inside. The subtle scent of his expensive cologne filled the space as he crossed the room toward her. He leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on her cheek.
They looked into each other’s eyes, both letting out a long, synchronized sigh of exhaustion.
"There is something you need to know," they blurted out at the exact same time.
A quiet chuckle broke from both of them, instantly cutting through the lingering tension in the room.
"Alright, you go first," Richard said, taking her hand in his as he settled into the chair right beside hers.
Roxanne looked at him, taking a moment to gather her thoughts before nodding. "I spoke to Cara," she confessed.
Richard’s brows knit together. "You spoke to her? What about?"
"More like I confronted her," Roxanne clarified softly. "I went to meet her earlier today."
Richard leaned back in his seat, his dark eyes scanning her face with deep concern. "Are you serious, Roxanne?" he asked, his voice laced with anxiety. "Why would you do that? You know how manipulative she can be."
Roxanne exhaled, shrugging her shoulders. "I just felt like I needed to give her one final opportunity to confess in private before I made my move," she explained gently. "Though I should have known she would remain completely stubborn."
"What move are you talking about?" Richard asked, his brows pinching together in confusion.
Roxanne leaned in slightly. "Have you seen the anonymous post about the paternity tests?"
Richard frowned. "The headline claiming the tests prove the baby is mine?"
Roxanne nodded. "I made a plan. If Cara confessed, I was going to give her a clean exit so she could walk away without being exposed. But since she refused, I leaked the information she gave us anonymously to the press."
"But right now, that headline makes her look more credible," Richard pointed out, shaking his head. "Even my mother believes it is proof that Cara is truly pregnant. So what is your actual plan here?"
Roxanne sighed softly, resting her gaze on his. "I know that by leaking that headline, someone in the media will dig deeper to verify the records. They will quickly discover that the lab reports are completely fake, and then this nightmare will finally end."
Richard nodded slowly, weighing her words carefully. "That is a clever strategy, but have you considered that it could backfire?" he asked quietly. "What if things go in the opposite direction?"
Roxanne turned her gaze toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the sprawling city skyline below. "If that happens," she said, her voice turning firm and resolute, "then I will have no other choice but to show the public the full truth myself."
