He Wants An Open Marriage? Done!

Chapter 193: An Official Statement

Richard studied her face for a long moment, watching the subtle shifts in her expression before he gave a slow nod. "I hope your plan works out perfectly," he said softly, his deep voice filling the quiet room.

Roxanne nodded back. A tiny flicker of doubt crept into her mind for a quick second, making her chest tighten, but she pushed the feeling down and nodded more firmly. "I hope so too," she murmured, anchoring herself in the decision.

Richard shifted in his seat, his gaze holding hers. "I went to see Christian," he revealed calmly.

Roxanne’s eyes nearly popped from their sockets. Her jaw slackened in complete disbelief. "What?" she exclaimed, the sound bursting out of her before she could stop it.

Richard gave a single, solid nod. "I needed to talk to him directly. And after that conversation," he said, his tone turning cold, "I am sure he will not be bothering you ever again."

Before Roxanne could even muster a reply, her phone began to ring loudly on the desk. Their eyes jumped to the glowing screen at the same time, and then they looked back at each other.

"It’s Christian," Roxanne said, her voice dropping.

Richard’s brows pulled into a tight frown, his dark eyes darkening instantly. "He is either calling to apologize to you, or he is trying to force my hand," he said, his jaw setting hard. "And I pray for his sake that it is not the latter."

Roxanne looked down at the screen, her eyes fixed on the name. A cold knot formed in her stomach as she wondered what could possibly come out of this call.

She took a slow breath and turned her gaze back to Richard. "Whatever the case, I do not have anything to discuss with him. I already made up my mind to ignore him from now on, and that is what I will stick to," she said, her tone firm as she swiped left, cutting the call short.

Richard nodded slowly, though his brows remained furrowed as if he silently wished he could turn around and put Christian in his place one more time.

Before she could even set the device back on the desk, the phone rang again. The screen lit up with the same unwanted name. Roxanne did not hesitate. She swiped left, ending the call immediately.

But the phone rang again. And again. The persistent buzzing seemed to fill the entire space.

Beside her, Richard’s hands balled into tight fists on the desk, his knuckles turning white as he stared at the glowing screen. Roxanne was certain that if he had the power to do it, he would step right through the line to handle Christian himself.

Roxanne stared at the screen, listening to the buzzing. A sudden thought hit her. Maybe she actually needed to hear what he had to say, if only to put an end to it once and for all. She reached out and swiped right, ignoring the sudden look of surprise on Richard’s face.

"What do you want, Christian?" Roxanne snapped the moment she raised the phone to her ear.

"Roxanne!" Christian’s voice came rushing through the speaker, tight and agitated. He paused for a second, clearing his throat over the static line. "I am calling because I want to know just one thing. Richard said something, but I need to hear it directly from you."

Roxanne glanced over at Richard, her brows pulling together. "What is it?" she asked coldly.

There was a heavy pause over the line. She could hear his ragged breathing before his voice returned.

"Are you pregnant?" he demanded.

Roxanne looked straight into Richard’s eyes, and a small smile tugged at the corner of her lips. A wave of satisfaction washed over her.

Richard had told him, and she could only imagine the look of shock on Christian’s face when he heard the news. For six long years, he had made her feel inadequate, carrying the subtle blame for why they could not have children. And now, the truth was out.

"I guess you will have to follow the news to find out the answer," Roxanne replied, her tone laced with cool provocation. "But while you are waiting, I think it might be time to give you one piece of advice I have been keeping to myself."

"What is that?" Christian shot back, his frustration clear.

"You might need to verify that the child your mistress is carrying is actually yours," Roxanne said smoothly. "If you could not get me pregnant in six years, who knows why."

Beside her, Richard’s hard expression softened just a bit at her words, a subtle glint of pride passing through his eyes.

"What are you suggesting? That I am the reason we could not have children?" Christian demanded, his voice rising in anger.

Roxanne smiled, placing her free hand gently over her belly. "I have nothing more to discuss with you," she said, her voice dropping into a steady rhythm. "This should be the absolute last time you ever try to contact me."

Before Christian could even muster a response, she tapped the red icon and ended the call. Without skipping a beat, she selected his contact details and tapped the block option, blacklisting his number permanently.

Good riddance. She let out a sharp breath, releasing all the pent-up tension that came with hearing his voice.

Richard reached out across the small space and took her hand, his thumb stroking her knuckles while his brows pulled together in gentle concern. "Are you alright?" he asked softly.

Roxanne nodded. "I have never been better," she said, feeling a genuine light inside her chest. "That Chapter is finally closed."

The words had barely left her mouth when the phone on the table buzzed once more. Roxanne frowned, her eyes darting back to the screen. But this time, it was Margaret’s name flashing across the display. She looked up at Richard.

"It is your mother calling again," she noted softly.

Richard’s brows pinched together in clear displeasure. "That is fine," he said, his voice flat. "Are you going to answer her?"

Roxanne stared at the flashing screen for a second, then shook her head, turning back to him. "I do not think so. I am not going to let anything ruin my day today."

Richard gave her a supportive nod. "I agree with you."

Roxanne nodded back and swiped to decline the call, feeling an immediate rush of relief at her decision.

Just then, a light knock sounded at the office door. Before either of them could speak, Libby stepped inside the room. Her face was bright, and she clutched her tablet tightly against her chest.

"I am so sorry to interrupt," Libby said, a wide grin spreading across her face. "But there is something I think you both need to see right now."

Richard turned toward his assistant, his brows furrowing in curiosity. "What is it, Libby?"

Libby walked quickly over to where they were sitting, her eyes scanning the text on her screen before reading it aloud. "Cardinal Hospital just released an official statement," she announced.

Richard’s frowned. "About Cara?" he asked.

Libby nodded. "They are denying everything. They said they have absolutely no record of Cara Whitewater undergoing any testing at their hospital or any of their affiliated facilities."

Richard and Roxanne turned to look at each other, the tension in the room instantly breaking as real smiles spread across their faces.
