Su Zhaozhao left the house after breakfast.
Just then, she saw Zhou Xiaoyun walking over.
Zhou Xiaoyun beamed at Su Zhaozhao. "Oh my, Zhaozhao, when did you move in? It was Huai Zheng who told me early this morning. That’s the only reason I knew you’d arrived."
"A couple of days ago," Su Zhaozhao said.
Thankfully, after using the spiritual spring water, the marks on her body had faded quickly, and she no longer felt any discomfort. Now, she didn’t have to be so secretive.
"You two got married so suddenly! Why didn’t you give me a heads-up? Otherwise, I would have insisted on cooking you a huge feast."
"Aunt Yun, you’re too kind. I was thinking, since we just moved in and haven’t finished unpacking, I wanted to wait and invite you over for a meal another day to thank you for taking care of me all this time."
"Honestly, Zhaozhao, why be so formal? How about today? Come over to my place for dinner tonight."
"No, no, I can’t. I want to cook at home today and let Huai Zheng have a taste of my cooking," Su Zhaozhao hurriedly told Zhou Xiaoyun.
’She had already planned it and promised Xie Huaizheng.’
"Tomorrow, then."
"Okay." Su Zhaozhao didn’t refuse this time.
Zhou Xiaoyun then pulled Su Zhaozhao along to a nearby market to do some shopping.
The market was bustling with activity. Su Zhaozhao bought some vegetables and meat, then went to the general store next door to buy some spices and seasonings.
Once she had everything, she headed back with Zhou Xiaoyun.
Zhou Xiaoyun added, "You know, the person who used to sell apples here hasn’t shown up in ages. Her apples were so delicious! I still dream about them. None of the apples I’ve bought since have been nearly as fresh, sweet, and crisp."
Su Zhaozhao’s heart lurched when she heard Zhou Xiaoyun’s words.
’It was true. She hadn’t been here to sell them in a long time.’
’Besides, the pay was too low and she had to wake up at the crack of dawn. It was just too exhausting.’
"Maybe she found something else to do..." Su Zhaozhao replied, feeling a little guilty.
Zhou Xiaoyun sighed, a little disappointed. "They were truly the best apples I’ve ever had. The absolute sweetest and most fragrant."
As Su Zhaozhao and Zhou Xiaoyun entered the military compound, Xie Huaizhen saw them from a distance, and his eyes narrowed.
He had just come from the Public Security Bureau. He’d been shocked to learn that Zhou Chengguo was being detained there.
’His good friend... even if his morals were questionable, how had he ended up in a detention center?’
Upon hearing the news, Xie Huaizhen had rushed to see Zhou Chengguo as soon as his training ended.
Zhou Chengguo was a complete wreck. He told Xie Huaizhen he couldn’t be a teacher anymore and that it was all Su Zhaozhao’s fault.
This time, however, Xie Huaizhen didn’t entirely believe Zhou Chengguo. The way both Su Zhaozhao and Zhou Chengguo had acted that day had already served as a warning.
’This friend of his wasn’t as innocent as he appeared.’
’And Su Zhaozhao wasn’t necessarily as bad as he had imagined, either.’
So, Xie Huaizhen had only consoled Zhou Chengguo for a little while before leaving the Public Security Bureau.
Still, he knew that Su Zhaozhao was the one who had brought this upon Zhou Chengguo.
’Why did Su Zhaozhao always do this, so effortlessly ruining his life?’
’First, there was the broken engagement, which made his mother so furious she became bedridden, leaving her with chronic health problems to this day.’
’And now, her arrival had cost him the only close friend he had here.’
But while he stood there feeling miserable, Su Zhaozhao was laughing and chatting with another woman.
’She was beautiful, even more so than before.’
’Even in casual clothes, she was the center of attention from afar.’
She carried her groceries into one of the apartment buildings in the military compound.
He felt a moment of disbelief. ’Is Su Zhaozhao really with Xie Huaizheng?’
’But how did she even know Xie Huaizheng?’
Xie Huaizhen’s thin lips pressed into a firm line. Every thought of Su Zhaozhao left him feeling flustered and annoyed.
’She isn’t here pestering me, so isn’t that a good thing?’
Xie Huaizhen told himself he didn’t need to worry about it anymore.
’It’s just... Xie Huaizheng probably doesn’t know about any of that... ’
’Why did she find a man with a name so similar to his? What was her real motive?’
Just as he was lost in thought, a woman suddenly ran up to him.
She wore a light-blue shirt and black pants, a very simple and plain outfit.
Her face, however, was as pure and delicate as a white lotus, looking almost dazzling under the sun.
When she saw him, she broke into a gentle smile. "Hello, excuse me, are you Xie Huaizhen?"
Xie Huaizhen was taken aback. "And you are...?"
Hearing his response, her eyes immediately crinkled into a smile. "It really is you! That’s wonderful, I’ve finally found you. My name is Gu Qingran. It’s a pleasure to meet you."
The woman before him was a little too enthusiastic, making Xie Huaizhen instinctively wary.
’He didn’t know her. Why was she acting so friendly toward him?’
"Do we know each other?"
"We don’t, but... well... I came looking for you because there’s something I want to talk to you about," Gu Qingran said.
"What is it?"
Gu Qingran looked at the man’s polite but distant attitude, feeling both happy and worried.
She was happy that she had finally found Xie Huaizhen. Her efforts recently had not been in vain.
But she was also worried, as Xie Huaizhen’s wary expression made it clear that he wouldn’t trust her easily.
She had no choice but to explain, "It’s like this: I’m a student from Yun City University, just visiting the area. I’m also in our school’s literary society. Uh, I was wondering if I could interview you? It would be for our school publication."
Gu Qingran then took her student ID card out of her pocket.
’She always carried it with her; she would never be without it.’
Xie Huaizhen opened Gu Qingran’s student ID, but he was still skeptical.
But then Gu Qingran said to him, "I know Su Zhaozhao, by the way."
Su Zhaozhao and Zhou Xiaoyun parted ways in the stairwell. Zhou Xiaoyun called out a reminder, "Don’t forget tomorrow night! Come to my place for dinner, okay?"
"Will do!"
Su Zhaozhao replied sweetly.
Zhou Xiaoyun looked at the young woman’s beautiful face. ’Maybe it’s because she’s married now,’ she thought. ’Nourished by love, she’s become even more beautiful, like a rose in full bloom, exquisitely vibrant.’
’She’d lost some of her girlish innocence and gained a touch of womanly allure.’
’Ah, it’s great to be young. And to be young and beautiful makes one all the more endearing.’
Zhou Xiaoyun couldn’t resist saying a few more words to Su Zhaozhao. "I imagine that within a few days, everyone in the compound will know that Huai Zheng is married. I wonder how many hearts will be broken among the young women here."
Zhou Xiaoyun knew that a man like Xie Huaizheng certainly had no shortage of admirers.
Her husband had said as much.
Hearing this, Su Zhaozhao couldn’t help but smile. "Well, that’s fine. As long as my heart isn’t the one getting broken."
’Heh, that was just the kind of person she was. She couldn’t be bothered with too many other people. Besides, Xie Huaizheng could only fall in love with one person. It was a fair competition, and this was the result of her hard-fought efforts.’
’The only thing was... it made her think of the story’s female lead...’
’The look Gu Qingran had given her that day hadn’t been friendly at all.’
’The novel’s plot was taking a strange turn, and she had no idea what would happen next.’
Su Zhaozhao felt a flicker of worry.
