"I’ve never had it before," Xie Huaizheng said. It was the first time he’d ever seen it.

There were sweet potatoes under the steamed pork with rice flour, which looked rather unique.

He also couldn’t tell what was sprinkled on the meat. It didn’t look like braised pork; it was more like a powdery coating.

The aroma wafting over made him wish he could start eating immediately.

However, Xie Huaizheng first ladled a full bowl of soup for Su Zhaozhao. "Thank you for all your hard work, Zhaozhao," he said.

Su Zhaozhao looked up at Xie Huaizheng. "You don’t have to thank me. You’re the one who works the hardest. You should eat more. I can’t eat that much, but with how hard you train, you need to eat more meat."

’Back in her original world, wellness trends were already popular online.’

’Things like ordering sugar-free milk tea, and how it was best to drink Americanos.’

’Even for cakes and such, it was best if they were made with real cream.’

’Not to mention ingredient lists—most people had started seeking out clean labels without all the chemical additives.’

’That was when Su Zhaozhao had started paying more attention to balanced nutrition. She knew this meal—with its meat, vegetables, and egg—was all about being well-balanced.’

’It was definitely no worse than what they served in the base cafeteria!’

’Now when she cooked, she wasn’t just thinking about herself; she had to plan balanced meals for Xie Huaizheng, too.’

Su Zhaozhao picked up several pieces of meat with her chopsticks and placed them in Xie Huaizheng’s bowl.

Startled by her gesture, Xie Huaizheng quickly covered his bowl. "No, Zhaozhao, you should eat more. I can serve myself."

He had been about to put food in her bowl, but to his surprise, she was enthusiastically serving him instead.

This role reversal felt very strange to Xie Huaizheng.

Su Zhaozhao didn’t insist and began to eat slowly.

’One of the reasons she liked this era was that it wasn’t yet plagued by modern pollution, so she could still eat organic produce.’

’Though this cabbage wasn’t as tasty as what grew in her space, it was still wonderfully fresh.’

After they finished eating, Xie Huaizheng went to do the dishes, but Su Zhaozhao stopped him. "I’ll do it. You go get some sleep."

’She felt that Xie Huaizheng really had it tough.’

’He was up before dawn and home after dark every day, training nonstop. It was only recently, because of their wedding, that he’d had a little more time off.’

’But the moment he had any free time, he would go right back to training.’

’Sometimes, his superiors assigned him missions, and they were always the more dangerous ones.’

’The scars on his body were proof enough.’

’That night...’

’Even in the heat of the moment, she had registered the dense network of scars covering Xie Huaizheng’s body.’

’When her hand had caressed his solid back, beneath his well-developed muscles, all she could feel were raised scars.’

’There were so many of them, and the feeling made her hand tremble uncontrollably.’

’Her heart ached for him. He must have had a very difficult life to get to where he was.’

’Su Zhaozhao still didn’t quite understand why Xie Huaizheng’s personality and his family situation were so different from their descriptions in the novel.’

’But his drive at the military base, his willingness to work himself to the bone and risk his life on missions—that was exactly as the novel had described.’

’His rakish attitude was just a front, as was his ferocity. The real him was as clingy as a puppy.’

’But she couldn’t stop him from his path, so she could only do her best to be good to him.’

Xie Huaizheng couldn’t stand the concerned look in Su Zhaozhao’s eyes. It stirred something inside him, making him want to do something mischievous to her.

But, considering her physical condition, he restrained himself.

"Alright, you cooked, so I’ll do the dishes. That’s only fair." Xie Huaizheng gently tapped her on the head, leaving no room for argument. "You’ve worked hard, Zhaozhao. Leave a simple chore like washing dishes to me."

Xie Huaizheng gathered the bowls and took them to the kitchen to wash.

Su Zhaozhao watched his retreating figure. The small kitchen, in her opinion, was a perfectly adequate size.

When Xie Huaizheng stepped inside, however, he made the entire kitchen seem crowded.

He was just so tall and broad, yet it also made her feel incredibly safe whenever he was near.

Feeling a little bored, Su Zhaozhao pulled a nearby book from a shelf to read.

Most of Xie Huaizheng’s books were official publications, full of positive, upright messages.

But there were also a few comic books.

Su Zhaozhao chose one of the comic books and began to flip through it.

Soon, the sound of running water from the kitchen stopped. Xie Huaizheng walked out, and seeing Su Zhaozhao reading a comic book, he sat down beside her, leaning against her. "Is it any good?"

"It’s good," Su Zhaozhao said.

’In truth, it wasn’t anything special, just something to kill time with.’

This thought prompted her to say to Xie Huaizheng, "Oh, right. I’m supposed to start teaching at the base’s elementary school next semester, right? I want to find some more English books to get familiar with the material. Will I have to buy them at a bookstore?"

"You don’t have to. I can borrow some books for you from the base library." Xie Huaizheng ruffled Su Zhaozhao’s hair. "Whatever books our Teacher Su wants, just say the word."

"Okay!" Su Zhaozhao beamed at Xie Huaizheng.

Xie Huaizheng seized the moment, pulling Su Zhaozhao into his arms. They leaned their heads together.

’At this moment, Xie Huaizheng thought, life like this was truly wonderful.’

「Elsewhere.」

Two people stood in the corner of an abandoned warehouse.

Gu Qingran looked at Xie Huaizhen with a bashful expression. "I know Zhaozhao has poor judgment. She betrayed your engagement and doesn’t like you, but... Deputy Battalion Commander Xie, I really like you. Would you be willing to start a relationship with me?"

’Gu Qingran knew it was incredibly forward to say something like this to a man she’d just met.’

’Xie Huaizhen would probably be surprised and think she was shameless.’

’But she had no other choice. She had to take this gamble.’

’She only had a few days left, and she might not be able to win Xie Huaizhen over in that time. It was better to just lay her cards on the table from the start.’

Xie Huaizhen looked at the innocent-looking young woman before him. Her eyes, full of tender emotion, were fixed on him, shimmering with unshed tears.

He couldn’t help his surprise. "I don’t know you. How could you possibly like me?"

"I’ve seen you before." Gu Qingran knew she could never explain her rebirth, and she had no intention of ever telling anyone.

So, she could only pretend she knew Su Zhaozhao. "But we’ve never been properly introduced, so it’s normal that you don’t recognize me. Still, I was captivated the very first time I saw you."

Xie Huaizhen, however, didn’t believe her. He stared at Gu Qingran with suspicion. "You’re lying."

’A chill went through Gu Qingran’s heart. ’How is that possible? My acting was perfect. How could Xie Huaizhen see through me in a single glance?’’

"I have nothing you can use anymore. Did Su Zhaozhao send you? Is she worried I’ll tell Xie Huaizheng everything?" He had wondered about that before.

’But on second thought, if she wasn’t going to bother him, he was happy to be left in peace.’

’It’s just that, sometimes he couldn’t help but feel bitter. She had been his fiancée, but just because his family fell on hard times, she broke off the engagement, humiliated his entire family, and even angered his mother so much she ended up in the hospital.’

’How could she just walk away unscathed and find a better man?’

’Sometimes, a twisted feeling would rise in his heart, and thinking of all this, he wished he could destroy Su Zhaozhao.’

’But the moment the thought flashed through his mind, he startled himself. ’When did I become so monstrous?’’

’In truth, after their last few encounters, Su Zhaozhao didn’t seem so hateful anymore.’

But Xie Huaizhen remained suspicious of Gu Qingran.

’Just who is this woman?’
