"Tian Tian, I’m curious, has your brother always been this quiet and reserved?"

Su Zhaozhao asked from her seat on the back of Li Tiantian’s bike.

The two of them were already on their way back to the military base. The road was deserted, flanked only by dirt, barren loess hills, and a few sparse green plants.

But it was a good opportunity to talk.

Hearing Su Zhaozhao’s question, Li Tiantian paused for a moment before answering, "Yeah, he’s always been like this."

"Don’t you and your family think his personality is a little strange? I mean, he seems a bit different from most people."

At this, Li Tiantian couldn’t help but give a bitter smile. "Yes, you’re right. Wei Chuan really isn’t like other people. But he’s so smart and focused that he never struggles with his studies. He just doesn’t pay attention to people, and we thought that was okay."

"That’s not okay!" Su Zhaozhao couldn’t stop herself from saying. To her, Li Weichuan almost seemed like the autistic children she had encountered before.

But on the surface, he didn’t seem to be completely autistic.

He would interact with people, but he just really disliked doing it.

It was more like he had actively chosen to close himself off.

In situations like this, only one thing came to Su Zhaozhao’s mind.

"Did he suffer some kind of major trauma in the past?"

The moment the words left Su Zhaozhao’s mouth, Li Tiantian squeezed the brakes, and the bicycle came to an abrupt halt.

Li Tiantian looked at Su Zhaozhao. "Zhaozhao, how did you know?"

Her face was filled with astonishment.

"I guessed."

"I... alright. I wasn’t originally going to tell you about this, because I didn’t think you needed to know. But since you’ve already figured it out, I might as well tell you."

A hint of resignation crossed Li Tiantian’s face.

"We offended some people back then. One of the groups took advantage of a moment when Wei Chuan was alone after school to kidnap him."

"We were all worried sick. But I was very young back then, too. Wei Chuan was only seven, and I was just ten, so I don’t remember it all that well. I just know that a few days later, Wei Chuan was brought back home, and after that, he stopped talking so much."

"I remember he used to love talking. He was so lively and would always greet elders with the sweetest words. But ever since that incident, he’s just sealed himself off. He only focuses on his own things, and if he doesn’t want to deal with someone, he won’t."

After listening to Li Tiantian’s story, Su Zhaozhao understood why Li Weichuan had become the way he was.

He must have been terrified, and he might have even suffered some cruel torment that left deep psychological scars on his young mind.

That’s why he doesn’t trust anyone, not even his own family.

But it seemed Li Tiantian and her family hadn’t realized the extent of the problem.

That much was clear from the fact he was being bullied at school.

It looked like he had been bullied by Huang Mao and his gang for quite some time, but he never said a word. It was probably because he felt that even if he did speak up, no one would help him.

So, he simply said nothing at all.

He had now completely lost faith in everyone.

"Tian Tian, have you ever taken him to see a psychologist?"

Li Tiantian thought for a moment. "I think we did, but we stopped going."

"I think his condition requires further intervention. Otherwise, it will only get worse."

He has locked himself away in his own world, ignoring everyone, which will only cause him to sink deeper into his distorted perspective.

From this perspective, the school bullying wasn’t even the biggest factor affecting Li Weichuan.

"Then, Zhaozhao, can you do it?" Li Tiantian asked suddenly.

She remembered her mother telling her that Su Zhaozhao knew a bit about psychology and had even treated quite a few people at the hospital before.

’If Su Zhaozhao could help my brother...’

’How wonderful would it be if my brother could go back to being that lively, cheerful, and adorable boy he once was.’

Su Zhaozhao hadn’t expected Li Tiantian to ask her without a moment’s hesitation.

’I thought she’d look for a professional.’

...

Xie Huaizheng returned to the family courtyard with a sumptuous meal, only to find the house completely empty.

Instantly, his expression darkened.

He saw the note Su Zhaozhao had left on the table. It said Li Tiantian had come looking for her and that the two of them went out together.

Xie Huaizheng’s dark eyes narrowed, and his thin lips pressed into a firm line. He clutched the note in his hand so tightly it seemed he was about to crush it.

’Why won’t Zhaozhao ever listen to me?’

’She even ran off to have fun with Li Tiantian. That girl dresses like a man, and she was far too warm and concerned about Su Zhaozhao at dinner the other night. It was enough to make him jealous.’

And now, Su Zhaozhao had actually gone out alone with Li Tiantian!

’Why?!’

Xie Huaizheng felt a sour churn of jealousy in his heart.

Even his food didn’t taste as good anymore.

He could only think about what he would do when Su Zhaozhao got back to make her stay away from Li Tiantian.

While he thought it was good for Su Zhaozhao to make a few more friends here, he didn’t want *this* kind of friend for her.

Xie Huaizheng ate quickly. Without Su Zhaozhao around, he wasn’t in the mood for anything and just wanted to finish his meal as fast as possible.

He finished eating, washed the dishes, and glanced at the clock. It was already past one. ’Su Zhaozhao still isn’t back?’

The town was so small; he couldn’t understand what could possibly be so fun there.

’If she wanted to go out and have fun, all she had to do was tell me. Would I really not have taken her?’

Xie Huaizheng sat at the table, propping his chin on one hand and tapping his fingers on the tabletop with the other.

Bored out of his mind, he started counting aimlessly. ’I wonder if Su Zhaozhao plans on coming back even later?’

But he was tempted to run to town and drag her back himself.

Just then, the sound of a key turning in the lock came from the front door.

Soon, a figure appeared in the doorway.

Su Zhaozhao opened the door, not expecting to see Xie Huaizheng sitting there, facing the entrance. The moment she appeared, his gaze locked onto her.

It was as if he wanted to stare a hole through her.

His intense, cloying gaze made Su Zhaozhao feel uneasy all over—though, that was mainly because she had a guilty conscience.

"You didn’t go to sleep? You were waiting for me here?" Su Zhaozhao asked, looking at Xie Huaizheng in surprise.

She walked slowly toward Xie Huaizheng. For some reason, she felt like he was about to interrogate her.

"Did you have fun with Li Tiantian? What did you do? Why are you back so late?"

Su Zhaozhao walked over to Xie Huaizheng and wrapped her arms around his neck. "It wasn’t that much fun."

’We just gave someone a good thrashing, that’s all.’

’And almost got beaten up ourselves.’

The next moment, the man gripped her by the waist and pulled her onto his lap, studying her. "What’s wrong? Your hands are so cold."
