Hello, Comrade. I'm Here to Marry You!

Chapter 190: Is Su Zhaozhao a Scammer?

"Go ahead and read it." Old Sir Xie didn’t refuse Huang Jiqin. Although he could read, he was getting on in years and his eyes weren’t what they used to be. He had struggled just to write the last letter.

Huang Jiqin opened the letter.

She quickly scanned its contents, checking for anything sensitive or upsetting, worried it might be a shock to Old Sir Xie.

But when she finished reading, Huang Jiqin felt her vision go black.

’What’s going on?!’

The old man hadn’t passed away. In fact, he said his granddaughter had always been in Jiang City and had never once been to West State. There was no way she would have been so bold as to seek out their grandson and marry him. He urged Old Sir Xie to investigate thoroughly, warning that they might have encountered a con artist.

’A con artist?’

’Is Su Zhaozhao a con artist?’

Huang Jiqin saw the signature at the end.

Shu Qiangguo.

’Shu, not Su...’

Huang Jiqin felt like she was about to faint.

Well, this was just great. Old Sir Xie wasn’t the one who got a shock—she was.

"Jiqin, what is it? Is there something wrong with the letter?" Old Sir Xie asked, frowning at Huang Jiqin’s deathly pale face.

’Could it be that the girl ran off to marry Xie Huaizheng on her own, without her family’s knowledge?’

’That’s probably what happened,’ he thought. ’But they had an arranged childhood betrothal anyway, and that brat Huai Zheng isn’t a bad catch. The marriage is still a wonderful thing.’

Huang Jiqin tried to compose herself and control her emotions. She said, "Old Sir, I... I don’t know how to tell you this..."

"What is it? Just say it," Old Sir Xie said, growing impatient.

"Huai Zheng... I think Huai Zheng married the wrong woman!" Huang Jiqin groaned.

’That Su Zhaozhao... she couldn’t have planned all this, could she? A con artist? Did she deliberately get close to Xie Huaizheng, seduce him, just to marry him?’

’Xie Huaizheng might have a bit of a temper, but he’s a good man. His rank isn’t low, and he has a very promising future.’

’On top of that, the Xie Family is prominent and wealthy. Could Su Zhaozhao really be a female con artist who targeted them?’

’But that can’t be right. Military marriages are subject to background checks. Since Su Zhaozhao was able to pass the review, it must mean there’s nothing wrong with her personally, right?’

’If that’s the case, then where did things go wrong?’

’Xie Huaizheng thought Su Zhaozhao was the one, and so did I.’

’Besides, from my interactions with Su Zhaozhao, I never thought she was lacking in any way.’

’In fact, I thought she was more outstanding than any girl her age I’ve ever met, and so beautiful too.’

When Old Sir Xie heard Huang Jiqin’s words, his face paled and his lips began to tremble uncontrollably. "How could this be? Didn’t the girl come from Jiang City? Wasn’t her surname supposed to be Shu? How could we have made such a mistake?"

"Her surname is Su!" Huang Jiqin exclaimed. "Who knew this would turn into such a huge mix-up!"

When Old Sir Xie was young, he had been stationed in many different places and had comrades-in-arms from all over the country. As a result, his accent wasn’t very standard.

He had trouble with certain pronunciations. Who would have thought it would cause such a major blunder now?

"What are we going to do? And what’s the story with this girl?" Old Sir Xie asked Huang Jiqin.

He then took out a wedding photo of Su Zhaozhao and Xie Huaizheng.

When Huang Jiqin had returned earlier, she had brought back two of their wedding photos.

The idea was that since Su Zhaozhao couldn’t return for the time being, they could use the photos to show the family what Xie Huaizheng’s wife looked like.

Old Sir Xie gazed at the girl in the photo, whose smile was as lovely as a flower, and couldn’t help but remark, "Well, that explains it. I remember thinking, how could someone with Old Shu’s genes possibly have such a beautiful granddaughter? Turns out, she’s not his..."

Huang Jiqin couldn’t believe Old Sir Xie still had the heart to joke at a time like this.

"I’m going to call Huai Zheng and tell him about this." As she said this, Huang Jiqin moved to make the call.

Old Sir Xie stopped her immediately. "Wait, don’t be so hasty. Investigate this clearly first. Rushing in angrily like this—you’re not going to make them get a divorce, are you?"

"But this whole affair was a mistake from the very beginning." Huang Jiqin was worried that Xie Huaizheng had been tricked.

Although from her own interactions, she felt the girl was decent, who was to say that wasn’t just an act?

"Let’s wait. Have someone do a thorough background check on the girl," Old Sir Xie told Huang Jiqin. "The two of them get along so well. We can’t just forcibly tear them apart, can we?"

Hearing this, Huang Jiqin sighed. "You have a point, Old Sir."

’It was just that the letter also mentioned his granddaughter would be visiting Beijing in a while, and he hoped they would give her a warm reception.’

’The person in the betrothal had suddenly changed...’

’And now the ’real one’ was coming right to Beijing. The thought alone gave Huang Jiqin a headache.’

...

Su Zhaozhao was completely unaware of all this.

During dinner, Xie Huaizheng said to Su Zhaozhao, "I’ve been assigned a mission. I might have to go to Jiang City for a while."

"Jiang City?" Su Zhaozhao asked in surprise. "You’re going there?"

"Yes, to a small town nearby. I might be gone for some time. Zhaozhao, I was thinking we could use this opportunity to transfer your household registration over to your maternal grandparents. Would that be okay with you?"

This would allow Su Zhaozhao to completely sever ties with her father and stepmother.

Su Zhaozhao nodded. "Sure."

’Perfect. She was getting a little tired of West State anyway. A trip to Jiang City would be a nice change.’

Su Dashan and Zhang Fengxia hadn’t been released yet, so Su Zhaozhao had nothing to worry about.

’The whole point was to make it impossible for them to find her and cause trouble after they got out.’

"Mmm. What about Li Weichuan, then? What are your plans for him? You’ll be gone to Jiang City for ten to fifteen days, won’t you?"

"Yes. You don’t have to worry about him. I have my ways of keeping him occupied."

’And that was to give him more workbooks!’

’All sorts of strange and bizarre problems. Su Zhaozhao figured that would be enough to keep Li Weichuan busy for a while.’

"Okay. If it’s too much trouble, just tell me. I can handle it for you." Xie Huaizheng was worried she might find it difficult but feel too awkward to say no, putting herself in a tough spot.

Su Zhaozhao reached out, wrapped her arms around Xie Huaizheng’s, and rested her head on his arm. "I know my own limits. If I can’t do something, I’ll be sure to say so."

"Okay. Thanks for all your hard work, Zhaozhao." Xie Huaizheng had run into Li Jian Country earlier that day, and the man had looked at him with immense gratitude.

He had simply said it was all Su Zhaozhao’s doing and that if Li Jian Country wanted to thank someone, he should thank her.

’He knew Su Zhaozhao was brilliant and capable, possessing a breadth of knowledge that even he was unaware of. He hoped that she could one day see more of the wider world, rather than being confined to this small town.’

’And if she needed it, he would help her get there.’
