Wenzhi studied Wei Kang’s full profile while leaning against the rooftop balcony overlooking the glittering night skyline of Beicang. A free faction city sitting dangerously close to the Capital.
His intel confirmed the man was staying in the hotel for the night on his way to the Capital, which meant he was already crawling deep into the pockets of the CEA and the Old Blood.
Wenzhi slipped a hand into his pocket, idly testing the weight of his gun. He was dressed sharp, wearing a sleek, deep blue and black traditional suit, his hair brushed back smoothly, and a pair of tracking glasses resting on his face.
Down in the courtyard, the elite gathered with laughter, music, and the aroma of catering filled the air. It was a beautiful, calming scene and a pathetic joke, considering eighty percent of the world was actively on fire.
Wenzhi was almost impressed by the delusion.
The tracking lenses over his eyes scanned the crowd, cross referencing faces, faction allegiances, and backgrounds. As long as their data existed on a server somewhere, Wenzhi could see it. The guest list was a laundry list of corrupt scientists and minor aristocratic families funding the Old Blood and the CEA.
"Have you spotted him?" Xinyuan asked, stepping up beside him. He looked striking in a tailored suit, his dark hair tied loosely at the tips with a few stray strands framing his face. He wore a sleek mask around his eyes like an accessory, and it suited his powerful frame perfectly as he leaned against the balcony rail.
"Not yet," Wenzhi said, his eyes never stopping. "But there are plenty of other people down there I wouldn’t mind killing."
"Perfect." Xinyuan murmured and leaned closer, looking over the balcony. "It does seem quite classy, doesn’t it?"
"Yes. A den of vipers and wolves in sheep’s clothing, committing the most despicable atrocities and then gathering to celebrate like the world isn’t ending," Wenzhi said, his voice flat as he continued mapping targets. "I’ve killed plenty of people exactly like this."
"You have?" Xinyuan asked, completely intrigued.
"Yeah. Let’s go down."
"I thought this was supposed to be a stealth operation," Xinyuan questioned, though he didn’t hesitate to follow as Wenzhi turned and began heading down the stairs. "What if someone recognizes us?"
"Then we just blow the entire place sky-high," Wenzhi replied casually, as if discussing the weather.
The moment they hit the main floor, Wenzhi’s eyes locked onto a figure by the edge of a shimmering pool. Wei Kang was throwing his head back in a laugh, a woman tucked under his arm who looked visibly uncomfortable with his grip.
"Found him," Wenzhi whispered.
Xinyuan tracked his gaze to the target. "Finally."
Wenzhi smiled, a dangerous edge to his lips. "Now we wait until he separates himself from the crowd."
Xinyuan glanced at Wenzhi, noting the subtle buzz of excitement radiating from his Guide. While Wenzhi was in his element, Xinyuan was a chaotic mess of nerves under his calm exterior.
Before they had left the base, Kaiwen, Chenxi, and Su Zheng had cornered him, trying to give him advice on how to propose to Wenzhi. They had insisted that popping the question during this mission was exactly the kind of unhinged, romantic gesture Wenzhi would love.
Xinyuan, however, was having serious doubts. Proposing in the middle of a literal assassination just didn’t seem like the best idea.
"He’s leaving with the woman," Wenzhi murmured, tapping Xinyuan’s arm and shattering his anxious spiral.
They fell into step behind the target, effortlessly playing the part of another high-society couple slipping away from the party to find some privacy. They followed the pair down a secluded, dim corridor. The moment they stepped into the private suite, they found Wei Kang cornering the woman, pinning her against the wall as she visibly shrank away from him.
Wenzhi didn’t waste a second. He stepped into the room, drawing his weapon in one smooth motion, and leveled the barrel directly at them.
"Scream, and I shoot," Wenzhi commanded, his voice ice-cold.
Both of them froze, terror instantly petrifying their expressions. Realizing he was cornered, Wei Kang aggressively grabbed the woman by the shoulder, shoving her forward to use her body as a human shield.
Wenzhi didn’t prolong the drama. He lunged forward, snagging the woman’s wrist and wrenching her out of the line of fire, tossing her back toward Xinyuan, who caught her effortlessly and held her fast against his arm.
"Wait, wait, wait!" Wei Kang shrieked, his hands flying up in a frantic panic. "What do you want? I can give you whatever—"
Thwip.
Wenzhi fired. The silencer choked the sound of the gunshot down to a dull, muted pop. The bullet caught Wei Kang square in the forehead, killing him instantly. He dropped to the floor like a stone, completely dead before he hit the carpet.
The woman clamped both hands over her mouth, swallowing back a scream so harsh that Wenzhi honestly thought she was going to pass out right there. Xinyuan released his grip on her shoulders the moment he realized she was entirely paralyzed with fear.
Wenzhi tilted his head, scanning her face. The data stream on his tracking glasses flickered, identifying her as a resident from Sector One in Yanjing City who had clearly climbed her way up to mingle with the elite.
"A lot of people are going to die in this building tonight, miss," Wenzhi told her, his tone eerily calm as he looked down at her. "If you want to be one of the survivors, you will walk out of here right now and you won’t say a single word to anyone. Understood?"
"Ye.. yes, I.. I understand." The woman nodded frantically, her chest heaving, before she spun around and bolted out the door into the corridor.
Wenzhi let out a deep, long sigh, the tension leaving his shoulders. Xinyuan looked down at him, his expression softening. "Do you feel better, freckles?"
"I haven’t felt worse in a long time, baby," Wenzhi replied.
Before Xinyuan could process the answer, Wenzhi reached out, fisted his fingers into Xinyuan’s silk tie, and yanked the large Esper down into a deep, consuming kiss. He pulled away just as suddenly, leaving Xinyuan thoroughly flushed and slightly breathless in the dim light of the hotel room.
Wenzhi’s grey eyes narrowed slightly as he kept his grip on the fabric. "I can feel exactly how nervous you are through the bond. What the hell is wrong with you?"
Xinyuan blinked rapidly, his mind racing as he scrambled for a cover story. "Nothing. I don’t know what you’re talking about."
Wenzhi gave him a deeply curious, searching look before his expression flattened into pure skepticism. "You’re keeping something from me."
"No," Xinyuan insisted. "No, I am not keeping anything from you."
Wenzhi slowly released his tie, smoothing down the fabric but keeping his eyes locked onto him. "Then why are you so nervous?"
"Because you look so pretty," Xinyuan blurted out. "I’ve never seen you dressed up like this before... so.. pretty."
Wenzhi stared at him, a slow, amused smirk pulling at his lips. "I’ve never seen you dressed like this either, and you look absolutely delicious. But you don’t see me acting like a nervous wreck about it. If we weren’t currently managing a tight schedule to slaughter half the people in this building, I’d be turning you feral right now."
Xinyuan let out a low, genuine laugh, the tension breaking. "Feral? We could...."
Wenzhi immediately slapped his palm over Xinyuan’s mouth, shushing him. "Shh! I need to focus."
He tucked the silenced gun back into his pocket and smoothly slipped past Xinyuan into the hallway. Xinyuan just smiled, a deeply smitten expression overtaking his face as he fell into step right behind his Guide.
For the rest of the night, the Beicang hotel became a slaughterhouse. Wenzhi moved like a ghost, hunting down and executing every single high-ranking target who held ties to the CEA and the Old Blood.
When the inevitable panic broke out and guests began trampling each other to flee, any armed security forces or combatants who tried to intervene were instantly intercepted by Xinyuan’s oppressive, dark energy.
By the time the sun began to hint at the horizon, the area was quiet, the air was thick with the scent of ozone and blood, and the very first list of names was officially ticked off.
