“Alana, I came here today to advise you to know your place. If you’re breaking up, just
break up...don’t covet what doesn’t belong to you! The Hudson family is out of your league! If Stephan’s parents found out about you, do you really think you’d be standing here so brazenly in front of me?”
“If you don’t want me to tell his parents about you, break up with him immediately.
Otherwise... the consequences will be more than you can handle!”
Alana’s fingers trembled slightly.
She tried to stay calm. “Stephan... he’ll protect me. He wouldn’t... let me be put in such an hurtful situation.”
Darla couldn’t help but laugh, mocking Alana’s naivety. “Are you kidding me?”
“Do you really think Stephan would go against his parents for your sake? Don’t be silly! Even if he loves you to pieces, so what? No matter how much he loves you, could that ever be more important than his parents? In the end, he’ll give you up because his parents won’t let you into the family!”
The tension in Alana’s heart was so tight it felt like it might snap at any moment.
But the tighter it pulled, the calmer she became.
She stared at Darla and retorted, one word at a time, “Darla, what makes you think Stephan’s parents wouldn’t like me?”
“Just because I have no parents, no status, and no connections, do you think they’d hate me and refuse to let me be with Stephan? I’ve always believed that the parents capable of raising Stephan to be so outstanding aren’t that superficial.”
Darla laughed. “Setting aside whether Stephan’s parents are shallow or not, let’s just talk about you and me. Between the two of us, do you think his parents would choose me, someone of equal standing and exceptional ability, or you, who has absolutely nothing to offer?”
“In what way do you think you measure up to me, and what makes you think you could ever win them over? Stop trying to make a scene and acting like a clown in front of me, okay?”
Alana looked Darla straight in the eye and retorted, “Who exactly is the clown here? Is it me, who’s good for nothing, or you, who’s the imposter?”
Darla’s expression shifted slightly. “You!”
Alana stated matter-of-factly, “Darla, you pride yourself on being noble and exceptional, a perfect match for Stephan. Yet you think I have no parents, that I’m worthless, and that I fall short of you in every way. Yes, my parents abandoned me when I was very young. I was raised by my grandmother. If it weren’t for her, I doubt I’d have made it this far.”
“I know I have no connections. With no family to support me, I’ve had to rely solely on myself, working my way up step by step to where I am today.”
“Even though I’m all alone, I’ve never once thought of giving up. I’ve remained strong and worked hard to make the most of every day, hoping that one day, I’ll make something of myself.”
“And you, Darla, you’re truly lucky. From the moment you were born, you were born into a privileged family.”
“Born into a wealthy and noble family, you’ve never wanted for anything, and your life has been nothing but smooth sailing.”
“You don’t have to work hard, in fact, you can obtain things effortlessly that ordinary people can’t achieve no matter how hard they strive. Take education, for example. Or a career.”
“I admit it, you’re exceptional, and you’re far more capable than I am. But you have no right to look down on me, because if our roles were reversed and you were in my position, you might not be as outstanding as I am. And if I were in your position, I might very well be just as capable as you. So why do you feel the need to act superior in front of me?”
Darla frowned. “Alana, don’t make excuses for yourself!’It’s a fact that I’m of noble birth and you’re of lowly status!”
“Wealthy families value a match of equal standing, it’s a fact that you’re not good enough for Stephan! I’m kindly advising you to leave him, but you’re not appreciating my good intentions.”
“If anything happens in the future, don’t say I didn’t warn you!”
Alana replied, “Then thank you for the warning. But whether I leave or not is my own business. And as for matters between Stephan and me, I hope you, Miss Gordon, won’t go out of your way to meddle in our relationship.”
Darla laughed in exasperation; she had truly never met such a shameless woman.
“Alana, you’ll regret this!”
Alana replied, “Whether I regret it or not has nothing to do with you. I don’t want to say any more. Anyway, I’m putting this out there: I won’t break up with Stephan easily!”
She paused, then fixed her gaze on Darla and said, enunciating each word clearly, “As for you, Miss Gordon, you who pride yourself on being a high-society lady...your character should be far superior to that of an ordinary girl like me. Surely you wouldn’t do something as morally reprehensible as meddling in someone else’s relationship and becoming a homewrecker, would you?”
“You!”
“I’m leaving!” Without giving Darla a chance to respond, Alana decisively stood up and turned to leave.
Darla laughed bitterly, her fists clenched tightly.
She never would have thought that Alana was so stubborn, no matter how she tried to persuade her, she refused to break up with Stephan!
Then again, having finally managed to hook up with a man like Stephan, how could she possibly be willing to let him go?!
It’s okay; sooner or later, she’ll expose Alana’s true, ambitious nature.
Alana returned to the apartment, feeling as if all her strength had drained away. She sat down on the cold floor, completely exhausted.
Darla’s disparaging and condescending words echoed vividly in her mind. Actually, Darla was right.
For wealthy families, the most important thing is a match made in heaven, equal status and compatibility.
No matter how noble or well-reasoned her words might sound, they were nothing more than a desperate struggle to vent her frustration over the unfairness of fate.
A person’s fate is predetermined from birth.
Some are born in Rome, while others are as lowly as dust.
No matter how skillfully she rationalizes it, she cannot resist the injustice of fate from the very beginning.
So, what should she do now?
Was she really going to part ways with Stephan just because their social statuses don’t match?
But if they really did part ways, wouldn’t that be exactly what Darla wanted?
Thinking of Darla’s threats.
She said that if Stephan’s parents found out about her, it would cause a huge scandal.
*If Stephan’s parents found out about you, do you really think you’d be able to stand here so brazenly in front of me?*
*If you don’t want me to tell his parents about you, break up with him immediately.
Otherwise... the consequences will be more than you can handle!*
*Do you really think Stephan would defy his parents for you? Don’t be ridiculous!*
*So what if Stephan likes you? Even if he likes you, could that ever be more important than his parents?*
*In the end, he’ll give you up because his parents won’t let you into the family!*
That voice echoed in Alana’s mind like a nightmare, over and over again.
Her fingers trembled uncontrollably.
At that moment, she truly wished Stephan would appear by her side, hold her close, and tell her that no matter what, he would never leave her.
But he was away on a business trip; he wasn’t there...
Alana clenched her teeth and couldn’t help but pull out her phone. Her fingers trembling, she struggled to find his number.
She dialed the number...
[Sorry, the number you dialed is currently busy. Please try again later...]
Alana slowly lowered her phone.
Never mind. He must be busy; she wouldn’t disturb him...
On Stephan’s end, he was on an important call with a client.
After hanging up, he returned to the hotel, went into the bathroom, and took a hot shower.
When he stepped out of the shower, he glanced at his phone and realized Alana had called him.
To be honest, it was rare for that girl to call him first.
Stephan raised an eyebrow. Being this proactive, could it be that she missed him?
Come to think of it, he’d been away on a business trip for nearly a week.
He planned to return tomorrow; he’d booked an afternoon flight and would arrive that evening.
However, he didn’t plan on telling her; he wanted to surprise her when he got back.
Stephan immediately video-called Alana.
