“These aren’t things you could have chosen for yourself. You were simply born into it, what does it have to do with you?”
Alana pressed her lips together. That was true, but not everyone understood it the way Stephan did.
“Stephan, earlier this morning, wasn’t there something I wanted to confess to you?”
Stephan nodded. “Yes, you wanted to tell me about this, right?”
Alana shook her head. “Not just that.”
He asked quietly, “What else?”
Alana paused for a moment. “Actually, I grew up at my grandmother’s house and was raised by many different families. My parents divorced when I was five.”
“They each went on with their own lives and didn’t want me anymore. My biological father, my mother, they all abandoned me, my father had said he didn’t want me because I’m a girl and can’t carry on the family line.”
“I also heard my mother found a new man, and for his sake, she didn’t want me either. Back then, no one wanted me. They all saw me as a burden, a burden standing in the way of their happiness.”
Perhaps the memories were too painful; she took a deep breath before continuing.
“Later, my grandmother took me in and raised me.”
“Grandma’s family all objected. They didn’t want me either. They thought Grandma was too old and incapable, why should she raise a child that even her own parents had rejected?”
“Raising me would cost a great deal of money, and they didn’t want Grandma to bear that burden. They wanted me to fend for myself. But Grandma stood her ground against everyone’s objections, kept me by her side, and watched me grow up. From elementary school all the way through college, it was Grandma who paid for everything. To me, Grandma is like my savior. She gave me a second chance at life, which is why I’ve become the woman I am today.”
“Without Grandma, I probably would’ve ended up on the streets, maybe an orphanage...maybe dead.”
Stephan gazed deeply at the girl in his arms, striving to recount her years-long journey in a calm tone.
Though it was just a few brief sentences, they left him breathless.
Even as an outsider, hearing Alana’s story would fill anyone with waves of despair. How had she managed to endure all this alone, at such a young age?
He couldn’t even bear to think about it.
And now, how much courage must she have mustered to confess these traumas to him?
No wonder, whenever she faced him, there was always a faint, indescribable sadness lingering in her eyes.
Stephan couldn’t help but pull the girl closer, his heart aching with sorrow.
“You didn’t dare tell me the truth before, were you afraid... that I’d look down on your background?”
Alana shook her head. “It wasn’t just that. I was afraid of being abandoned again.”
Stephan’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and he found it extremely difficult to speak.
He couldn’t help but cup her face, his dark eyes staring fixedly at her. Gritting his teeth, he said word by word, “Alana, I will not abandon you. No matter what you’re like, I will never abandon you.”
“The person I love is you, all of you. No matter what happens, I love you. I will never dislike you just because you have flaws.”
Seeing the man’s determined gaze, Alana bit her lip, the heat in her eyes uncontrollably overflowing.
Tears welled up and slid down from the corners of her eyes.
Stephan saw them, lowered his head, and gently kissed them away, his breath warm.
“Alana, whether you believe me or not, I will always be by your side.”
Alana’s throat choked with emotion, and she had no way to express how she felt at this moment.
She nodded repeatedly, unable to resist leaning closer, wrapping her arms around the man’s slender neck and kissing his thin lips.
No matter what, at this moment, she was willing to believe him.
Stephan also kissed her deeply in return, his movements incredibly gentle.
As if cherishing a precious treasure he held in the palm of his hand.
Even if everyone in the world didn’t want her and abandoned her, he would still hold on to her tightly.
In his eyes, she wasn’t a burden but a precious treasure that he could long for but never easily attain.
To him, she was one of a kind, irreplaceable.
No one knew how long they had been kissing before the two of them embraced each other tightly again, releasing their emotions.
After Alana confessed her circumstances, the heavy burden in her heart finally felt much lighter.
It turned out that confessing everything wasn’t so difficult after all.
She had simply worried too much, being afraid of this and that, which instead held her back and caused these things to become a burden in her heart.
Now that the burden had been lifted, she felt completely at ease.
And fortunately, the man she loved wasn’t like the others. After hearing about her background, he didn’t despise her or abandon her.
At this moment, Alana felt very satisfied and incredibly fortunate. There was even a sense of unprecedented happiness surrounding her.
This... was what it felt like to be loved, right?
Because she had been deprived of love for so long, she had almost forgotten what it felt like to be deeply loved by someone.
Stephan rested his chin against the girl’s soft head, enjoying the warmth and happiness of this moment.
“Alana, actually, I also want to tell you about my identity. The truth is...”
Alana gently interrupted him. “I know.”
“You’re the heir of the Hudson family, the number-one prestigious family in the capital, and also the president of the Hudson Group, the Stephan Hudson.”
Stephan smiled. “You guessed?”
Alana honestly said, “I just felt that your identity wasn’t simple. You usually dress in suits and formal clothes, the underwear you wear costs me a year’s salary, and the gifts you give me cost tens of millions. How could an ordinary person possibly afford them?”
“So I guessed that you must be the young master of some prestigious family! But I didn’t expect your identity to be this damn... great!”
She had originally wanted to say that word, but Alana felt that it was rather vulgar, so she forcibly changed it to another word.
After a pause, she continued, “Actually, the moment I truly found out about your identity was because of Darla.”
“Darla?”
Stephan frowned. “What does she have to do with this?”
Alana told him honestly, “She came to find me and happened to tell me about your identity. She thought my background wasn’t a good match for you, so she asked me to break up with you.”
Stephan sneered. “Who does she think she is? What right does she have to persuade me to break up with you?”
Alana nodded. “Exactly. That’s what I said to her too.”
Stephan raised an eyebrow. “So, you weren’t frightened by my identity and didn’t have thoughts of backing out and breaking up with me?”
She said seriously, “I was actually frightened, and I did have the thought of breaking up with you. But that isn’t something Darla can decide, right?”
