“No. She has no say.” Stephan declared.

He then held her hand. “Don’t ever break up with me, Lana. I won’t be able to survive it.”

Alana smiled. “I’m not sure I would survive it either.”

He hugged her, tightly, assuring her that there would be no secrets between them anymore. He then urged Alana to go have some rest.

While keeping watch alone, Stephan sensed a shadowy figure lurking nearby. His sharp gaze swept over the area.

“Who’s there?”

The figure vanished in a flash around the corner.

He frowned and couldn’t help but take a few steps toward the corner.

It was late at night, and all was quiet.

The sound of black leather shoes tapping against the cold floor echoed distinctly.

Agnes hid in the shadows. Hearing the footsteps drawing closer, she clenched her teeth but still didn’t dare to show herself; instead, she turned and ran into the stairwell.

It was late, and she didn’t know who this man was. Although she was curious why he had been waiting outside the old woman’s hospital room all this time, she didn’t feel comfortable confronting him directly.

She had come back secretly and didn’t want to alert her family just yet.

Stephan walked to the corner and saw that the figure had already vanished into the hallway.

His eyes darkened. Judging by the silhouette, it must have been a woman.

So, who exactly was that sneaky woman?

************

The following morning, Alana was awakened by the light streaming in through the window.

She let out a soft moan of discomfort and instinctively tried to roll over to go back to sleep.

But as if realizing something, she sat bolt upright in bed. Her head was buzzing.

She recalled what Stephan had told her last night. He had told her to go to bed and rest, and that when he got sleepy in the wee hours of the morning, he would come and wake her up to keep watch.

But now it was daylight, why hadn’t Stephan come in to wake her up yet?

It didn’t take long for her to realize that Stephan had tricked her.

He never had any intention of waking her up. He had used the excuse of letting her sleep first just to put her at ease, so she wouldn’t worry so much.

Alana bit her lip, her eyes reddening.

“Stephan, how could you do this...”

She hurriedly threw off the covers and ran out without even bothering to put on her shoes.

As soon as she stepped outside, sure enough, she saw Stephan standing like a statue, staring intently outside her grandmother’s intensive care unit.

His tall, slender figure stood incredibly tall and imposing.

Alana’s voice was hoarse and choked with emotion as she called out, “Stephan!”

Stephan turned his head. “You’re awake?”

Having gone without sleep all night, dark circles had formed under his eyes, and his eyes were bloodshot; his exhaustion was evident.

Alana couldn’t help but throw herself into his arms, hugging him tightly with a heavy heart.

“Stephan, you rascal!”

“You tricked me again! You promised you’d wake me up in the middle of the night, why didn’t you?”

But Stephan only noticed that she had run out barefoot. He furrowed his brow. “Why aren’t you wearing shoes?”

Alana looked up, her eyes glistening with tears. “It was more important to come see you right away than to waste time putting on shoes.”

Those words reminded Stephan of the time she’d told him she’d been in a car accident, and he’d rushed out to find her.

In the rush, he’d forgotten his shoes.

She had seen him without shoes and asked him about it; he remembered that he had answered her in much the same way.

Stephan curved his lips and couldn’t help but lift the girl in his arms.

“Your feet are delicate...unlike my own.”

“Let’s go back so you can put your shoes on.”

Alana stroked his brow and eyes with concern, saying earnestly, “Stephan, it’s your turn to rest, do you understand?”

“Look at those dark circles under your eyes. After I carry you home, you’re going straight to bed to rest. Otherwise, I won’t let this go!”

Even though she was concerned for him, she couldn’t help but speak with the toughest words.

Stephan smiled. “Lana, I’m not as weak as you think.”

“But your body isn’t made of iron...you need rest too! I don’t care. Your dark circles are so bad, you have to rest!”

“Alright, I promise.”

Alana was delighted and couldn’t help but give him a quick kiss on the lips.

But since she hadn’t rinsed her mouth yet, she didn’t dare go deep, she just gave him a light, butterfly-like peck before quickly pulling away.

Little did she know that after he laid her on the bed, he grabbed the back of her head and deepened the kiss.

After being pestered for a while, Alana finally pushed him away in shock. “You... don’t mind that I haven’t brushed my teeth and my breath stinks?”

Stephan chuckled, “Not at all. My girlfriend smells wonderful from head to toe...not a hint of bad breath.”

Alana blushed and scolded him playfully, “Regardless, I have my image to worry about. You’re not allowed to kiss me when I haven’t brushed my teeth!”

Stephan chuckled, “I’ll kiss you whenever I want. Who are you to stop me? I’m going to kiss you right now!”

“Oh, come on, don’t kiss me. Go lie down and rest!”

“I’ll rest after I kiss you!”

“Stop it, Stephan!”

Miranda, who had come to the hospital early that morning to visit, and her eldest daughter, Joan, passed by the ward.

Seeing Alana and Stephan playfully bickering inside, they both couldn’t help but frown.

Miranda was utterly disgusted; the scene inside was simply too much to bear. “Oh my, how shameless! Flirting with men right here in the hospital!”
