Seeing this, Alana rushed over without a word and slapped Joan across the face.

She hit her with almost all her strength.

It left Joan’s face swollen and red.

Joan let out a piercing scream.

Miranda instantly shielded her daughter in her arms, like a mother hen protecting her chicks.

Furious, she shouted, “Lana, what are you doing? How dare you hit your cousin? Have you lost your mind?!”

Alana clenched her teeth tightly. “Not only am I going to hit her, I’m going to take her to the police station!”

Miranda gritted her teeth in fury. “You...you...you! We’re family, and yet you’re being so ruthless. Aren’t you afraid of karma?”

Joan covered her swollen face and said shamelessly, “Exactly. I was only seducing your boyfriend...it’s not like it’s some huge crime. It’s your boyfriend’s fault for being so handsome! Being handsome is his fault!”

Alana laughed in exasperation. “You don’t think you’re in the wrong, do you? Fine, I’m calling the police right now.” She decisively pulled out her phone.

Miranda and Joan lost their composure again and hurriedly stood up to stop Alana.

“No, no, no...don’t call the police!”

“Em... Let’s talk this out!”

“Don’t be so ruthless!”

“If your cousin ends up in jail, her whole life will be ruined!”

“That’s right. Grandma’s still in a coma. If she wakes up and finds out you’ve had me taken to the police station, she’ll be so furious she’ll die of shock!”

When Alana heard Joan mention Grandma waking up, she realized that if she sent Joan to the police station, it might actually kill Grandma...she couldn’t help but clench her fists a little tighter.

No matter what, Grandma was still very weak and couldn’t handle any stress.

“Apologize. I want you to apologize to my boyfriend right now!”

“Well...” Miranda and Joan were still hesitating, unwilling to apologize so easily.

Alana said, “If you don’t apologize, I’ll call the police!”

At that, the two stopped hesitating, walked obediently up to Stephan, and bowed their heads to apologize to him.

“We’re sorry. It was our fault just now. We won’t do it again.”

Stephan didn’t even glance at them.

“Get out.”

The mother and daughter had never been treated so humiliatingly before.

But there was nothing they could do, after all, they were the ones who had wronged him first.

With this having happened, the mother and daughter no longer had the face to stay, so they hurriedly left.

Alana was a bit hesitant to face Stephan at that moment. “I’m sorry.”

Because she had let Miranda and her daughter off the hook.

Stephan cupped her head in his hand and gently stroked it several times.

“It’s okay, I understand. You have your own concerns.”

“After all, your grandmother hasn’t woken up yet, and you didn’t want to make a big deal out of it and embarrass her.”

Alana couldn’t help but embrace Stephan, burying her face in his chest as tears welled up in her eyes. “Stephan, thank you for understanding me.”

Stephan couldn’t help but smile. “Silly girl. I haven’t lost anything. Besides, she didn’t harass me. Even if we called the police, they’d just take her to the station for a talking-to, nothing serious.”

“Also, if I were in your shoes, facing a situation like this, I would’ve made the same decision as you, so there’s no need for you to blame yourself.”

Alana gave a quiet “Mm-hmm,” but hugged him even tighter.

She was so grateful that, at her most helpless moment, he had been by her side to offer his support.

Stephan patted Alana on the back, but then seemed to remember something. “Oh, right, I forgot to tell you something.”

Alana slowly lifted her head. “What is it?”

Stephan said, “Last night, when I was outside Grandma’s hospital room, I saw someone lurking around nearby. They didn’t leave for a long time.”

Alana froze. “Who was it?”

Stephan shook his head. “I don’t know. It was too dark to see clearly, but judging by the silhouette, it looked like a woman.”

“There are security cameras in the hallway. If you want to know who it was, you can ask the hospital to pull up the surveillance footage.”

Alana paused.

A woman?

For some reason, a vague memory of someone began to surface in her mind.

Could it be... her?

Stephan observed her reaction. “Do you want to check the surveillance footage?”

Alana pressed her lips together and said calmly, “No need. I think I can figure out who she is.”

Stephan looked at her for a few more seconds, gave a faint “Hmm,” and didn’t ask any further questions.

Alana took a deep breath and composed herself. “Let’s eat. I just went out and bought you some breakfast.”

Stephan curved his lips. “Okay.”

**************

Meanwhile, Miranda and Joan, mother and daughter, practically fled in panic.

Once they’d escaped the hospital entrance, thinking Stephan and Alana wouldn’t chase after them, they couldn’t help but start cursing under their breath.

Miranda said angrily, “What kind of man is that? He has no manners at all. Just look at his demeanor, he’s clearly not from a wealthy family!”

Joan clutched her swollen cheek and stomped her foot in anger. “Exactly! And he just threw me out, that’s way too much!”

“But Alana is even worse, what gives her the right to hit me? With that sourpuss face of hers, it’s her good fortune that I even took a liking to her boyfriend!”

Miranda said through gritted teeth, “That damn little slut Alana, she’s been out in the world for a while and her nerve just keeps growing. Now that she’s Mom’s favorite, I’m really afraid she’ll try to steal Mom’s fortune from you one day!”

Joan said, “Mom, you can’t let Alana get away with this!”

Having been slapped by Alana, she now hated her with a passion and didn’t want to give that little slut a single advantage.

Miranda snorted coldly. “Don’t worry. She doesn’t have what it takes!”

The mother and daughter were just about to hail a cab to leave.

Suddenly, a voice called out to them.

Miranda and Joan both turned to look and instantly saw a woman wearing sunglasses and dressed in an exceptionally elegant, high-end outfit.

The woman had a graceful figure and impeccably maintained skin; she looked like a girl in her twenties, her age impossible to guess.

Yet one could still sense the weight of the years radiating from her.

Joan couldn’t help but ask, “Who are you?”

Hearing this, Miranda immediately tapped Joan’s hand and whispered a reminder, “Shh, she’s Alana’s mother. You should call her ‘Auntie.’”

Joan froze, staring at the woman in disbelief. She never would have imagined that Alana’s mother would be so beautiful and elegant, with such a great figure.

Compared to her own mother, who was bloated like a balloon, looked old and haggard, and acted like a shrew.

Miranda had no idea her own daughter was badmouthing her. If she ever found out, she’d surely slap herself silly for giving birth to such a creature.

Just then, she spotted Agnes approaching. Her eyelid twitched, and she grinned as she hurried over to greet her.

“Oh my dear, why are you back?”

Although Agnes was wearing a pair of sunglasses, she couldn’t hide the exhaustion on her face. “After hearing about her condition, how could I possibly stay still and just wait for news? That’s why I came back to see her.”

Miranda immediately interjected, “Oh, come on, I told you there’s no need for you to come back. Everything’s fine. Mom had surgery yesterday, it was a success, and she’ll be waking up soon. There’s no point in you coming back; Mom doesn’t even want to see you!”

Also, Alana was still in the hospital, and she certainly didn’t want the two of them to run into each other.

If they did run into each other, wouldn’t all the money she’d secretly siphoned off this woman over the years be exposed?

That was a massive sum, tens of millions...and she had already spent most of it.

Agnes said earnestly, “It’s rare for me to come back, so I definitely want to see her. I won’t feel at ease until I’ve seen her. Even if she sees me and wants to hit or scold me, I won’t hold it against her.”

Agnes had spent the entire night in the hotel room last night thinking it over, and she’d finally come to terms with it.

Running away wasn’t a solution.

She had to face this!
