Besides, she hadn’t seen the woman in over a decade. Her mother was getting old and in poor health; she didn’t know when she might pass away.

The time she had left to see the old woman and be with her was growing shorter with every passing day.

Could she really be so heartless as to never see her again for the rest of her life just because of a grudge from over a decade ago?

If that were the case, she would truly be too selfish and heartless.

Miranda blurted out instinctively, “No, you can’t go!”

Agnes was puzzled. “Why?”

Miranda said nervously, “Even if you want to go, you’ll have to wait until Mom’s condition stabilizes first.”

“She just had surgery and hasn’t woken up yet. Even if she does, seeing you would be too much of a shock for her! If you truly care about her, you shouldn’t see her just yet.”

Hearing this, Agnes grew even more worried. “She had surgery? She hasn’t woken up yet? I wanted to visit last night, but I saw a strange man watching over her room, so I didn’t dare to approach.”

Miranda didn’t feel like explaining further to Agnes. “Oh, never mind that for now. You should go home first. I’ll let you know if there are any updates on Mom.”

Agnes said earnestly, “But I want to go see her right now. I came over last night, but I haven’t had a chance to see her yet. I want to see her while she’s still asleep. Once I make sure she’s okay, I’ll leave.”

Miranda was growing impatient. “Sis, why are you so stubborn? It won’t do any good for you to go see her now. The old lady’s still under observation in the ICU. None of us can get in, let alone you. Don’t waste your time!”

Agnes said, “I’ll just stay outside. I just want to catch a glimpse of her from a distance, I’ll definitely not go in and disturb her.”

With that, Agnes tried to enter the hospital.

Miranda quickly stopped her. “Sis, you really can’t do that!”

Agnes found this strange. “Miranda, why are you stopping me from going in to see her?”

She was just going to take a quick look from outside the ward, wasn’t even that allowed?

The more Miranda tried to stop her, the more suspicious she became.

Could it be that Miranda was deliberately hiding something from her regarding the old woman?

Agnes speculated, “Miranda, is it possible she isn’t out of danger yet?”

Miranda shook her head. “Oh, no.”

Agnes pressed, “Then why won’t you let me see her?”

Miranda was still struggling to come up with an excuse when suddenly, her phone rang. “Hold on a sec, I need to take this call.”

Miranda gripped Agnes’ hand tightly to stop her from slipping into the hospital.

With one hand, she quickly pulled out her phone and answered the call.

“Hello, who is this?”

It was a call from the hospital.

“Hello. Your mother-in-law has just regained consciousness.”

Miranda had specifically instructed them to call her immediately if the old lady showed any signs of waking up.

Her expression changed. “The old lady’s awake?”

“Yes.”

“All right, all right, got it.”

Miranda looked up at Agnes.

Agnes had also heard the conversation, and her eyes sparkled with uncontrollable delight.

“She’s awake? Thank goodness! I’m going to see her right now!”

Miranda’s expression immediately turned cold. “Now that Mom’s awake, you absolutely must not go see her! Do you want Mom to see you and get so upset that she passes out again?”

Agnes felt a sharp pang in her chest. Clenching her teeth, she said resolutely, “I won’t go see her. I’ll just take a quick look from a distance to make sure she’s okay.”

Miranda thought to herself, she couldn’t keep blocking Agnes from seeing the old woman forever. Even if she stopped her this time, what if Agnes snuck off to see her again next time?

It would be better to let Agnes see her right under her nose; that way, if any problems arose, she could handle them as they came.

With that in mind, she nodded in agreement. “Alright, but you can only take a quick look from a distance. Don’t stay too long, and don’t let her spot you.”

Of course, she didn’t want Agnes to meet with Alana at all.

Agnes agreed, “Alright, I know what to do.”

***********

Meanwhile, Alana had just finished coaxing Stephan to finish his breakfast when she heard a commotion coming from her grandmother’s intensive care unit.

The two of them immediately rushed into the room.

Alana saw her frail, pale grandmother, her body covered in tubes, open her eyes.

Without hesitation, she rushed over.

“Grandma!”

“Grandma, you’re awake! Thank goodness, you’re finally awake!”

She immediately took her grandmother’s hand, so overcome with emotion that she could barely form coherent words.

She hadn’t expected her grandmother to wake up so quickly.

She thought Grandma wouldn’t wake up until at least twenty-four hours had passed, the critical period.

But as long as she woke up, that was a good thing.

Stephan didn’t step too close; he stood at a distance, watching Alana reconnect with her grandmother.

Having just had a brush with death, Grandma surely had plenty of private things to share with Alana.

Still, her grandmother’s awakening was a positive development, so he immediately grabbed his phone and notified the doctors, asking them to come check on her.

Grandma took Alana’s hand in hers. Seeing Alana’s face, which was a mess from crying, she forced a comforting smile.

“Lana, don’t cry. Grandma’s fine, really.”

Alana nodded, her voice choked with emotion. That’s right, Grandma was okay.

So she stopped crying.

But her tears were completely beyond her control. No matter how much she wiped them away, more would keep flowing.

She could only comfort herself by thinking that these weren’t tears of sadness or grief, but tears of joy.

“Grandma, you just woke up. Does anything hurt?”

Grandma shook her head. Instead of mentioning any discomfort, she said, “Lana, Grandma just can’t let go of you, so I haven’t been able to bring myself to leave so soon. If Grandma were to suddenly pass away, leaving you all alone and helpless, it would break my heart.”

That was why she fought so hard on the operating table, just to hold on a little longer, to survive and catch one last glimpse of her precious granddaughter.

And while she was at it, she made sure to pass on everything she needed to.

As soon as Alana heard this, her tears flowed even more freely.

“Grandma, please don’t say that any more...”.

“No, Grandma has to say it. I’m afraid if I don’t say it now, I won’t have another chance. I have to make sure everything is settled so you won’t have any worries in the future. Only then will Grandma be able to leave with peace of mind.”

“I still have a savings book. There’s over a hundred dollars in it, plus some jewelry, my dowry from back then and the betrothal gift your grandfather gave me, all kept in a small wooden box. I hid that little wooden box under the old peach tree by the front gate. Go home, grab a shovel, and dig a little...you’ll find it.”

“Oh, and the deed to the old house is in there too. The government is planning to expropriate and demolish our old house, the compensation is over four million.”

With tears in her eyes, Alana asked, “Grandma, why are you telling me all this? These are your personal belongings.”

Her grandmother said weakly, “I’m getting old. We come into this world with nothing and leave it with nothing. So, I’ve decided to leave all these things to you.”

“Over a hundred dollars, plus the four million in demolition compensation, and the jewelry I’ve kept for years, that should be more than enough for you to live comfortably for a long time.”

“If you get married, this money and jewelry can serve as your dowry. A dowry is a woman’s confidence; if you marry, having a substantial amount of money will ensure your in-laws won’t look down on you.”

“If you never marry, you can use this money to start a small business, or you can do nothing at all and still live a very comfortable life.”

“As long as you’re comfortable, Grandma can rest easy after she’s gone...”

Alana shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “No, I don’t want it. Grandma, you’re going to live to be over a hundred years old. I only want you, I don’t want any of these things.”

Grandma gripped Alana’s hand tightly. Seeing that she had shed so many tears, she tried to raise her hand to wipe them away, but she had no strength.
