Chapter 14: Fighting on different fronts–Chapter 14–
Title>> Fighting on different Fronts
The portal that opened up led to a staircase that carried them upward until the damp smell of the swamp slowly disappeared behind them.
As Takeshi stepped onto the third floor, his brows furrowed almost immediately. Something felt wrong.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Not the ordinary kind where his eyes simply needed time to adjust. This darkness consumed the walls, the floor beneath his feet, and even the faint blue glow of the Tower’s runes. It was as though the entire world had vanished around him.
"...Nyxara?"
His voice echoed into the emptiness, but nothing answered back.
"Shit.." he cursed.
For several long seconds, the only thing Takeshi could hear was the steady beat of his own heart.
Then, without warning, a faint white light slowly appeared ahead of him. The darkness peeled away piece by piece until the scenery became painfully familiar.
"...No way. Not this again!"
He wasn’t standing inside the Tower anymore.
Instead, he found himself inside the cramped office from his previous life.
The old fluorescent lights buzzed overhead while rows of cheap desks stretched across the room.
Even the stale smell of burnt coffee lingering in the air was carried by the rickety fan that hung in the ceiling.
Standing at the front was his manager. He had the same wrinkled shirt. The same irritating face.
And that annoying look of disappointment as if Takeshi was his son.
"I expected better from you."
The man’s voice hadn’t changed either.
"Your quarterly performance has been disappointing. At this rate, I don’t see much of a future for someone like you."
Takeshi stared at him for a long moment before rubbing the back of his neck.
"...Seriously?"
He couldn’t even feel angry anymore.
"I already hated this job before I got isekai’d."
The office suddenly cracked apart like shattered glass.
Before he could even react, another scene formed around him.
This time...
It was the Appraisal hall.
Princess Isabella stood exactly where she had before, looking down at him with that same expression of disgust.
A moment later, her knee buried itself into his balls, knocking the air from his brain before he crashed onto the marble floor.
What happened next was that the bald knight stepped forward.
His heavy boot slammed into Takeshi’s face.
Again. And again.
Each impact felt painfully real.
And it pulled at the strings of his willpower. Draining it by the second.
Takeshi’s eyebrows furrowed with ferocity.
"This fucking bastards, I will shove those smiles down your faces."
But the angrier he got, the more powerless he felt.
It was as if each muscle was dragging him down with adrenaline.
But just then it hit him. "This isn’t real. This isn’t the tower. And I am no fucking wimp."
Takeshi groaned as he finally felt the tense anger filter from his fingers.
"...So that’s your game."
Takeshi slowly pushed himself back onto one knee as the knight raised his boot for another strike.
This time, however, he reached up and caught it before it could land.
His grip tightened. "I already survived this once."
The illusion around him trembled violently.
"And unlike before..."
A small grin spread across his face as the images of Solaria, Lana, and Nyxara flashed through his mind one after another.
"I’m not alone anymore."
Crack!
The room shattered into countless fragments of light before dissolving completely.
The familiar blue glow of the Tower returned, and the cold stone floor appeared beneath his feet once again.
A few steps away, Nyxara stood with her arms folded across her chest, looking at him with an amused grin.
"Took you long enough."
Takeshi let out a long breath before looking at her.
"...How long?"
"A few minutes."
"And yours?" He asked curiously.
Nyxara shrugged casually.
"I punched mine."
Takeshi blinked. He couldn’t tell if she was joking right now.
"...That worked?"
"It shut its damn mouth. So yes."
He couldn’t help laughing as he shook his head.
"...Honestly... that sounds exactly like something you’d do."
Nyxara smirked before pointing toward a stone archway at the far end of the floor. Beyond it rested a small circular chamber covered in softly glowing runes, the air around it calm and peaceful.
"Looks like the Tower lets challengers rest every few floors," she said.
Takeshi nodded quietly before following her toward the chamber...
***
The staircase stretched on for several seconds before finally opening into another massive chamber.
The moment Takeshi stepped off the last stair, he immediately noticed how different this floor was.
There wasn’t a swamp.
There wasn’t complete darkness either.
Instead, the entire floor resembled the ruins of an ancient battlefield. Broken pillars lay scattered across cracked stone tiles, while countless weathered statues stood frozen where they had once fought.
Their bodies were covered in moss and deep cracks that spoke of centuries of neglect.
And it didn’t wasn’t a resting room. It looked like a trap.
"...This place feels older," Takeshi muttered, slowly looking around.
Nyxara inhaled deeply before rolling one of her shoulders.
"And cleaner."
She clenched her fist a few times before flashing him a confident grin.
"The poison’s completely gone."
Takeshi nodded.
He could tell just by looking at her.
Back on the second floor, the swamp’s poison had slowed her movements ever so slightly. She was still terrifyingly strong, but not at her best.
Now...
The demoness standing beside him felt like she had completely recovered.
The heat radiating from her crimson skin was noticeably stronger, and the faint wisps of hellfire dancing around her body had returned.
"I was starting to miss burning things," Nyxara said with an excited smile.
Before Takeshi could answer, a low grinding noise echoed throughout the ruins.
Grrrrrr...
The statues moved.
Dust fell from their shoulders as cracks spread across their stone bodies. One after another, glowing blue eyes slowly lit up across the battlefield.
Takeshi counted them quickly.
"...Eight."
The largest one stepped forward.
It easily stood over twelve feet tall, carrying an enormous stone hammer almost as large as Takeshi himself.
The remaining seven followed behind it, their heavy footsteps shaking the entire floor.
Nyxara cracked her neck.
"Finally..."
A mad grin spread across her face.
"Something that might actually survive one punch."
