--Chapter 15--

Title>> Master and Demoness

The largest golem roared first.

The sound wasn’t loud because of its voice. It was the grinding of thousands of stone plates rubbing against one another as the giant raised its hammer and charged.

"Master!"

"I know!"

Takeshi burst forward first instead of waiting behind Nyxara. The Strength and Agility flowing through his body carried him across the battlefield much faster than any ordinary E-rank should have been capable of.

His fist slammed into the nearest golem.

Bam! Pow!

The impact echoed through the ruins. The construct staggered back a single step.

"...What?" Takeshi frowned.

His knuckles throbbed.but there wasn’t even a crack on the stupid golem.

The golem slowly turned its glowing eyes back toward him before swinging a stone fist at his head.

"Damn!"

He ducked beneath it just in time, the punch smashing apart one of the ruined pillars behind him as chunks of rock exploded across the battlefield.

"So that’s how it is, you cunts," Xavier exclaimed.

His now throbbing arm was a testament that these things weren’t goblins nor were they wolves.

They wouldn’t scream in pain, growl in anger or hiss in irritation.

And this was because they were walking boulders. And physical strength alone wasn’t going to break them.

Nyxara laughed loudly behind him.

"My turn?" She paused.

With no answer, she smirked cruelly.

"My turn!"

The words didn’t fully leave her lips when she shot past Takeshi like a crimson cannonball before driving her fist into the chest of another golem.

Boom!

The construct staggered several steps backwards, deep cracks spreading across its chest.

"...Better."

She grinned... "Much better."

At the sight of the raging Nyxara, the largest golem raised its enormous hammer overhead.

Without thinking, Takeshi shouted.

"Behind you!"

Nyxara immediately twisted her body and moved. The hammer crashed into the ground where she’d been standing only a heartbeat earlier.

The entire floor shook violently.

"There!"

Takeshi pointed toward the creature’s supporting leg.

"The left knee! Break its balance first!"

Nyxara didn’t question him. And just trusted his words.

A burst of hellfire erupted around her arm as she drove a devastating punch directly into the joint.

Crack!

The stone leg shattered. And the enormous construct lurched sideways.

"Now the shoulder!" Takeshi directed again.

Boom!

Its arm exploded into fragments of stone as Nyxara’s fire coated fist, showed no mercy.

"The core should be in its chest!" Takeshi shouted as he circled around another attacking golem. "Finish it!"

Nyxara’s grin widened.

"I like the way you think, Master."

She lunged forward one final time. Her burning fist pierced straight through the monster’s cracked chest.

For a brief moment...

A glowing blue crystal became visible.

Then it shattered. And the giant golem froze.

A second later, its entire body collapsed into a mountain of lifeless stone.

The remaining constructs hesitated, immediately they witnessed the sight.

It turned out even walking boulders knew it was about to go wild. Real soon.

Takeshi noticed it immediately.

"They’re linked!"

Nyxara looked back. "What?"

"When the leader fell, the others slowed down!"

A grin spread across his face.

"So stop wasting time on the little ones."

He pointed toward the largest remaining construct.

"Break that one!"

Nyxara laughed so loudly and wildly the entire ruin echoed with it.

"I can turn all of them to Ash."

She exploded toward her next target without another word.

***

In a matter of minutes, the battlefield quickly descended into chaos. The other golems blocked Nyxara’s path.

Stone fists crashed into the ruined pillars one after another, reducing centuries-old structures turned to clouds of dust.

Massive chunks of rock rained across the floor, forcing Takeshi to keep moving as he searched for openings instead of trading blows head-on.

A smaller golem lumbered toward him. This time, he didn’t meet it with his fists.

He sidestepped its swing before driving a powerful kick into the back of its knee. The construct staggered just enough for him to grab it, wrapping both arms around its neck.

"Nyxara!"

The demoness didn’t even turn around.

She simply thrust an arm backwards.

A wave of Hellfire shot across the battlefield and slammed into the golem’s chest. Already off balance, the construct exploded into fragments of stone before Takeshi could even jump away.

"...Show off," he muttered, brushing dust from his clothes.

Nyxara laughed loudly.

"You called."

"I did."

"Then I answered."

Another heavy rumble echoed through the ruins. The last three golems charged together.

Takeshi’s eyes darted across the battlefield.

The two smaller ones were trying to box Nyxara in while the largest hung back, its glowing chest pulsing brighter with every passing second.

"There!" he shouted, pointing immediately.

"The big one’s feeding energy into the others!" Takeshi deducted.

Nyxara followed his finger.

"I see it, now."

"Ignore the small ones!"

Her mane spiked like thorns and a delicious grin spread across her face.

"My favourite kind of strategy."

She planted one foot against a fallen pillar before launching herself high into the air. Hellfire erupted around both fists as she descended like a blazing meteor.

Boom!

The ground gave up this time. It caved in once then again before exploding out with burning chunks of rock.

The largest golem barely managed to raise its arms before Nyxara’s punch shattered straight through them.

Its glowing core was now exposed.

"There!" Takeshi yelled.

"Finish it!"

Nyxara didn’t ask questions so far and she sure wasn’t asking now.

She drove her burning fist straight into the crystal.

For a brief moment, the battlefield fell silent.

Then...

The blue light inside every remaining golem flickered.

One after another, the towering constructs froze before collapsing into lifeless piles of stone.

The grinding echoes slowly faded until nothing remained except the sound of loose pebbles rolling across the floor.

Nyxara stretched both arms above her head before letting out a satisfied sigh.

"...Now that was fun."

Takeshi smiled as he looked around the ruined battlefield.

"I’ll admit..."

He wiped a layer of dust from his sleeve. He still couldn’t shake off the fact that all this was actually real.

"That went better than I expected."

Nyxara walked back toward him, resting both hands behind her head.

"You’ve started figuring me out."

"I’ve started figuring out how you fight."

She flashed him a toothy grin.

"And?"

"And giving you complicated instructions is pointless."

Nyxara burst into laughter. "I knew I loved fucking you for a reason."

A low rumble interrupted them.

The stone wall at the far end of the battlefield slowly split apart, revealing another staircase leading upward.

Takeshi glanced toward it before taking a slow breath.

"Looks like our flight is here."

Nyxara nodded and together, they climbed the ancient steps, leaving the shattered battlefield behind.

Several moments later, the staircase opened into a quiet circular chamber bathed in soft blue light.

Ancient runes glowed across the walls with a gentle rhythm, and for the first time since entering the Tower, there wasn’t a monster waiting to greet them.

Takeshi looked around even more cautiously this time.

And only when he was sure this wasn’t another trap, did he let out a small breath.

"...A safe room."

Nyxara smiled a naughty and devious smile.

"Looks like the Tower is finally being polite."
