--Chapter 19–

Title: Record Breaker

Takeshi and Nyxara stepped out of the Tower of Approval into the warm afternoon sunlight.

The bustling plaza outside was just as crowded as when they had entered earlier that day.

Nobles occupied the raised balconies surrounding the Tower, merchants stood shoulder to shoulder beneath expensive parasols, while knights and adventurers filled the open square below.

Almost every pair of eyes turned towards the pair the moment they emerged.

The conversations that had filled the plaza only moments earlier gradually faded until an unusual silence settled over the entire area.

Takeshi noticed it as he walked out.

"...Something’s off," he said more to himself than anyone else.

Nyxara folded her arms beneath her heavy chest, completely unfazed by the hundreds of stares now directed at them.

"What?" she asked with a grin. "They’re looking exactly where they should be."

Takeshi ignored her. His eyes swept across the crowd instead.

Erling Vega was standing near the front beside Princess Isabella and High Priestess Valeria.

There was also several nobles from House Otto and House Grimwald that had remained behind instead of returning to their estates.

Even more surprising...

He could see some of the city’s presumed adventurers gathered around.

"They’ve all been waiting..." Takeshi muttered.

Before he could think any further, a familiar thought crossed his mind.

’Where’s Lana and Solaria..?’

His eyes instinctively searched the plaza for them. But neither of them was anywhere to be seen.

’That was good’

If they weren’t here, then they were exactly where they were supposed to be.

Still, he had to keep up appearances.

He turned towards Valeria. His expression unreadable.

"The other two, where are they?"

The High Priestess met his gaze without hesitation. Her voice dripping with slight annoyance.

"They declined waiting for you."

She paused briefly before continuing.

"They returned to your manor shortly after you entered the Tower."

Takeshi nodded as if he was just catching up to what was happening.

"Understood," he said in a low voice.

Internally, however, a faint smile threatened to appear.

’Perfect...’

If everything had gone according to plan, Lana and Solaria should already be halfway through carrying out the task he’d entrusted to them before entering the Tower.

Whatever happened next in the plaza...Had absolutely nothing to do with them.

But after a while the silence surrounding the tower finally broke.

"...He actually came out," the quiet mutter spread through the crowd like wild fire.

"I thought he was only E-rank."

"Didn’t he challenge the Fifth Floor?"

"How is he even still alive?"

"I heard he entered with that Demoness."

The whispers multiplied with every passing second until they became impossible to ignore.

Some stared at Takeshi but most of their gazes were on Nyxara.

The Demoness noticed their gazes and her lips slowly curled into a satisfied grin as she straightened her posture ever so slightly, making absolutely no effort to hide the massive black horns rising from her head.

If anything...

She looked more proud that they were afraid.

Her crimson tail sexily swayed behind her while her burning eyes swept across the crowd.

Several knights instinctively tightened their grip around their swords.

Nyxara chuckled. "Cute."

Takeshi sighed inwardly.

She’s enjoying this far too much...

Before the whispers could grow any louder, one of the senior Church officials stepped forward.

He raised a scroll high into the air, his amplified voice echoing throughout the plaza.

"Hero Deva Grayfort has successfully cleared the Fifth Floor of the Tower of Approval on his very first attempt."

The entire plaza erupted.

***

The announcement alone was enough to send the entire plaza into an uproar.

"The Fifth Floor?"

"An E-rank?"

"That’s impossible!"

"I thought heroes usually stopped after the third floor on their first attempt."

An elderly adventurer standing near the front slowly lowered the mug he’d been holding. Deep scars stretched across the side of his face, each one earned over decades of fighting monsters.

"...Fifth Floor..." he muttered.

"I was B-rank before I ever made it that far."

The younger adventurer beside him stared blankly at Takeshi.

"...And he did it on his first attempt?"

Not far away, a young knight leaned towards the captain standing beside him.

"Captain... was the appraisal wrong?"

The older man never took his eyes off Takeshi.

"The appraisal crystal has never been wrong."

"...Neither has the Tower."

The young knight swallowed quietly.

"Then how...?"

The captain didn’t answer. Because truthfully he didn’t know.

The official raised a hand, allowing the noise to settle before continuing.

"Hero Deva Grayfort’s official clear time..."

He slowly unrolled another section of the scroll.

"...Forty-seven minutes and twelve seconds."

The plaza quieted once again.

Several people exchanged confused looks.

"...Is that good?"

A merchant scratched his head. "I’ve never climbed the Tower."

"It isn’t good," the old adventurer from earlier laughed bitterly.

"It’s ridiculous."

Every head turned towards him. He pointed at the Tower without taking his eyes off Takeshi.

"Forty-seven minutes isn’t a clear."

"It’s a massacre."

A chill quietly spread through the crowd.

The Church official nodded before continuing, in an attempt to calm the crowd.

"By the Tower’s judgement..."

"...Hero Deva Grayfort has established a brand-new Tower Record for all E-rank Heroes."

The words came with a wave of silence. Absolute silence.

It was so silent, it seemed even the wind seemed to disappear from the plaza.

Then...

"What?!"

"A Tower Record?!"

"The Tower acknowledged him?"

"The first E-rank to ever do it?"

"No..."

The voices came from everywhere and nowhere, words jumbling above one another.

"The Tower doesn’t hand out records lightly," A middle-aged merchant immediately turned towards the servant behind him.

"Find out where that young hero is staying."

"But sir..." The servant responded with a stunned expression.

"Now," the merchant answered without looking at the servant.

Elsewhere, two lesser nobles quietly exchanged glances.

"House Otto will definitely make a move."

"They’d be fools not to."

"What about House Grimwald?"

"They’re probably thinking the same thing."

Standing amongst the crowd, Erling’s expression darkened even further.

It wasn’t just the record but what came with it. The attention that it carried made sure nobody was looking at him anymore.

At this point, every conversation, whisper and pair of eyes had shifted towards Takeshi.

Takeshi himself simply stood there, taking everything in.

He wasn’t surprised by the record.

The Tower had already shown him enough to know it judged achievements fairly.

What interested him...

Was the people.

Only a few days ago, they had looked at him like a stray dog that had wandered into the appraisal hall.

Now...

Some looked confused and slightly cautious of his presence.

Others were already trying to figure out how useful he might become.

A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Are you idiots done looking down on me?

Come on... Keep at it...

It’ll only make this more fun.
