--Chapter 28--

Title: The Watcher’s Eye

Lana’s voice cut through the hall with quiet certainty.

"Master... someone is watching us."

Takeshi turned toward the window immediately.

Outside, the manor grounds looked empty beneath the fading light. Nothing moved between the trees, and there were no footsteps or obvious signs of anyone nearby.

Nyxara was already at the window, her eyes narrowed as she searched the grounds. Even her tail had gone stiff behind her.

"I don’t see anyone."

"You wouldn’t," Lana replied.

She remained where she was, her fingers lightly curled beside her. "The method is refined. High-rank scrying. Most people wouldn’t notice it."

Takeshi looked at her.

"Can you track it?"

"I already am."

That answer made Takeshi pause for half a second before he nodded.

"Keep watching. Don’t act yet."

Nyxara glanced back at him.

"You’re just going to let them stare?"

"For now."

Lana’s crimson eyes shifted toward him, waiting for another order. Takeshi didn’t give her one.

He simply stood there and thought.

Far from the manor, beneath the cover of a low stone ridge, Lord Cassian Veyne knelt on one knee.

A dark cloak covered most of his body, its heavy fabric damp from the evening air. One gloved hand remained pressed tightly against his left eye.

Above the secluded manor, a translucent phantom eye hovered in the air.

Its surface rippled like oil whenever the spell pulsed.

Each pulse sent a faint pressure back through Cassian’s skull. The sensation was cool and precise as images from inside the manor flowed into his mind.

The air around him smelled of damp earth and crushed leaves. Insects continued their thin evening chirping somewhere behind the ridge, completely unaware of the man watching the manor from beneath them.

Cassian’s breathing remained steady. Through the third class scrying spell, he watched the hall.

Three women were in maid uniforms with one man standing among them.

Cassian’s uncovered eye narrowed.

So this is the Record Breaker.

He adjusted the spell, pushing for a clearer view of Takeshi’s expression. The phantom eye sharpened.

For a moment, Cassian could almost make out the faint rise and fall of their breathing.

But his high level spell never noticed the shadow gathering above him.

It formed slowly, almost like smoke collecting in the cold air. Massive fingers of pure darkness stretched open over his back, silent and weightless.

The temperature around his neck dropped slightly but the pressure didn’t touch him.

At least not yet. It simply waited.

Inside the manor, Lana’s fingers moved.

It was a small movement. A curl of one finger followed by a slight turn of her wrist.

Takeshi noticed.

"How close is he?"

"Close enough," Lana answered. "Shall I remove him?"

Nyxara’s grin appeared immediately. "Say yes. Say yes."

Takeshi didn’t answer right away. His eyes moved between the three women before settling on the window.

The easiest option was obvious.

Kill the watcher. Erase the problem before it became a bigger one.

But Takeshi pushed the thought aside for a moment. If he was anything in his old life, it wasn’t impulsive in the true sense of the word.

He still needed more. He needed permanent growth. More understanding of how magic in this world worked. More control over the board before he started knocking pieces off it.

Killing an observer he didn’t know much about might end up being something too loud to ignore.

And loud meant attention. Which he didn’t mimd at all. After all, he was record breaker Takeshi right now.

But this attention meant the Church and the conniving houses would start moving faster than he wanted.

Takeshi slowly exhaled. "No."

Lana tilted her head slightly in surprise and yet approval. "No?"

"I don’t want him dead. Not yet." Takeshi’s voice remained calm. "Show him what he’s looking at, then break him."

A slow smile spread across Lana’s lips as she heard those words. "As you wish, Master."

Outside, the shadow above Cassian shifted like smoke again.

The enormous shape dissolved without making a sound, flowing outward instead.

It spread across the distance between Cassian and the manor before settling around the building like a vast dark cloak.

The phantom eye immediately began to tremble. A thin vibration ran through the spell.

Cassian felt it in his teeth first. Then behind his covered eye.

His expression contorted in that exact interval. He was slowly beginning to hear faint sounds of what they were saying.

But now, even the image inside his mind shook violently.

The feedback tore through the connection and slammed into his skull like a spike of ice and heat at once. White-hot pain flushed behind his eye, and blood immediately began running beneath his glove.

Cassian gritted his teeth. As his control slipped.

For one brief moment, something far older and heavier than the resistance of a normal mage pressed through the connection.

It felt as though something had reached through the spell and wrapped a hand around his throat.

Then the phantom eye ruptured. The scrying link snapped with the sensation of glass breaking inside his head.

Cassian staggered back. His hand remained pressed against his face as blood slipped between his fingers and dropped onto the soil below.

His breathing became sharper, turning slowly into pants.

The taste of iron filled the back of his throat. Yet he forced himself upright.

Cassian stared toward the distant manor through the pain.

"...I see."

He didn’t stay any longer. Pulling his cloak tighter around himself, he immediately retreated into the trees.

Every step sent another dull throb through the ruined connection behind his eye.

Whoever this new hero was...

They weren’t someone he could afford to watch carelessly.

Back inside, Lana lowered her porcelain -white hand.

"It is done. He has withdrawn."

Nyxara clicked her tongue. "How boring, you should’ve let me burn him."

Takeshi ignored her and looked toward Lana.

"Any trace left?"

Lana nodded, licking her lips. "A little."

Lana raised two fingers. And a thin thread of shadow curled between them, carrying a faint smear of blood.

The residual blood pulled from the broken connection that dripped down the watcher’s face.

Lana stared at it as if trying to understand its origins. But Takeshi sensed something else, he saw something slipped through her usual composure.

Hunger...

It was brief, sharp, and immediately controlled.

Still, Takeshi noticed.

Lana brought her fingers closer. Then, without looking away from him, she touched the blood to her tongue.

Her crimson eyes flared before they lowered slightly.

Takeshi didn’t say anything at first. He simply watched her to see how far she would go.

Nyxara noticed the tension on his shoulder and moved closer to him.

"Why are you looking at her like she just grew a second head."

"Because red really looks good on her, " Takeshi teased and continued staring at Lana.

This drew an immediate "pfft," from Nyxara, who ran a hand around the red embroidery of her maid outfit. "I look better."

Lana ignored Nyxara, instead her gaze met Takeshi’s gaze again.

The hunger had already disappeared behind her usual elegant calm. Only the faintest curve remained at the corner of her lips.

"You are more observant than most, Master."

"And you’re worse at hiding things than you think."

Solaria, who had remained quiet throughout the exchange, glanced between the two of them.

Her brows drew together slightly. She clearly didn’t understand everything that had just passed between them, but she could feel that something had changed.

Takeshi finally turned away from the window and Lana.

"For now, we do nothing. Let him run back to whoever sent him. I want more growth before I start answering every pair of eyes that lands on this place."

Nyxara stretched her arms and tail behind her head. The movement pulled her new maid uniform tightly against her chest. As her cleavage spilled over like the waves of the ocean.

"So we wait, let you get stronger, and then break people."

"Something like that," Takeshi smiled.

Lana calmly adjusted the black veil beside her face.

"A good approach. How unlike a man who just threatened a high-rank observer without leaving the hall."

Takeshi gave her a thin smile.

"I said I wouldn’t kill him. I didn’t say I want to invite him for dinner."

He looked over the three women once more.

The uniforms still looked perfect on them, but the weight in the room had nothing to do with how sexy they were right now.

Outside, the manor grounds had returned to silence.

Somewhere beyond the trees, a bleeding noble was probably already rewriting everything he’d assumed about the so-called E-rank failure living inside this manor.

Takeshi turned toward the inner corridor.

"Stay alert. If he comes back, I want to know immediately."

"Yes, Master," Lana answered.

The three women began dispersing. Takeshi’s eyes lingered on Lana for another moment.

Her calm, seductive posture. And controlled expression mixed with the brief hunger that had appeared when she’d tasted another person’s blood.

He’d already learned that each of his summons had their own peculiarities.

Apparently, Lana had one more he hadn’t seen yet.

Takeshi turned away.

He had more than one kind of hunger to deal with in this house.

And sooner or later, all of them would need to be fed.
