--Chapter 3–

Title>>> The Failed Heroes

The next morning came way too fast and Takeshi spent most of the night with barely enough sleep.

Even now, his balls still ached from the princess fan assault that almost ended his future generations.

Every time he moved, the phantom pain reminded him of the humiliation in the hall, the pompous laughter from those bastards.

While he drowned in his despair, the other three men in the dirty room looked even worse.

These idiots had woken very early with eyes red as blood from hours of crying after Takeshi told them what he heard from the servant boy.

He’d hoped to motivate them by telling them. Maybe they could work on a plan but that failed woefully.

These three idiots were indeed the top of the crop for being useless. He had to admit.

It was already late in the afternoon after hours of them being forced to shovel horse shit when the guards arrived again.

They banged on the bars of the door and shouted. "Get up you worthless worms. It’s time for your special trial. The Church has decided to give you one last chance to prove you are not completely useless."

One of the guards, a man with a head that reflected the sun like a mirror, barked.

Takeshi stood up slowly. His face was brown and dirty with faeces but it was very calm. Maybe even too calm.

Inside though, his mind was sharp like a blade. He still remembered the servant boy’s warning vividly. This trial was definitely not a real chance but a death sentence wrapped in silk and lies.

Noticing their reluctance to stand up. The bald guard pushed the giant metal door open and stormed in.

"Are you deaf now? You pieces of shit," he barked again. "I said stand up."

He pulled the man that was a former gamer on the collar roughly, pulling him like a piece of rag.

But before he could get his way, Takeshi immediately sprung up like a coiled snake, grabbing on the bald man’s wrist while retrieving out the dagger strapped to the man’s belt.

Twisting the bald man’s hand backwards. Takeshi pulled him aside and placed the sharp dagger on the man’s throat..

"Don’t move..." Takeshi threatened. "Take me to the priestess or I will kill this bastard"

The other guards moved back, their hands drawing their blades from the scabbards instinctively.

"Don’t do anything stupid," one of them spoke.

But Takeshi noticed there was no real desperation or conviction in his voice.

Did they not value the life of one of their own?

Takeshi didn’t know what to believe but he didn’t plan to die like trash here. That much he could stand on.

"Arrgghhhh"

Takeshi suddenly screamed as a jolt of pain pierced through his entire body instantly.

Bang!

In the blink of an eye, Takeshi found himself buried amidst splintered wood and pain like nothing he had ever felt in his life.

It was all a fluke... All of it.

It turned out it was all a fucking fluke.

The guard he held hostage was stronger than Takeshi ever predicted. The bald man had easily head-butted him and smacked him down into the floor before Takeshi even knew what was happening.

Takeshi laid down as the sole of a brown boot mixed with horse shit and wet hay slammed on his face over and over and over again.

"This classless bastard. How dare you touch an esteemed knight."

The bald guard slammed his boot on Takeshi’s head one more time before spitting on him and retrieving his dagger from the floor.

Bloodied and powerless. Takeshi could barely open his eyes to see the other men sprawled in the corner like sardines. Too afraid to even help him.

"Fucking cowards." He cursed, before being pulled by the other guards.

***

Somewhere between being dragged like common sheep to slaughter and arriving in the lower passages of what seemed like an abandoned part of the palace.

Takeshi felt his body healed up considerably. Some of his joints still hurt from the attack of the bald knight but he could at least think straight now.

Most of the pain had disappeared leaving only bruises.

Turns out, one of the guards was a healer and they would have been in trouble if he was brought to the priestess with him one foot in the grave.

So...they slapped on some bandages and dragged him along with the other three failures.

The air grew colder and heavier the deeper they went down the flight of stairs. The torches on the walls gave weak light that still allowed shadows to stretch out in all directions. Takeshi also noticed the stone walls looked older here. Maybe even ancient.

After a long walk down winding stairs, they reached a massive circular framed door. If you could call it that.

Hundreds, maybe thousands of arcane runes were carved like stories onto the frames of the door.

The high Priestess Valeria waited at the entrance with a small group of acolyte mages. They all adorned white robes with red and gold threaded designs with Valeria being the only one wearing a veil over her head.

Through the veil, her red piercing eyes stared at the failed heroes with the same coldness from yesterday.

"This is the Sanctum of Eternal Judgment," she said in a formal yet soothing voice which made Takeshi even more unsettled.

"The goddess will test you here. If you have any worth, any at all, you will awaken. If not, your mana will return to the world."

She paused momentarily. "---And you would be a blessing to the realm."

Takeshi almost laughed at the hubris. ’What a nice way to say you are throwing us away, to die.’

A moment later, Valeria raised her hand as a series of golden magic circles manifested around her fingers.

The three circles suddenly overlapped each other, twisting like keys causing the runes on the massive door to come alive.

Click!

The sound echoed and a burst of white blinding light took over the immediate space.

Kraaaannnk

The heavy doors opened up and the guards pushed them inside one by one at a moment’s notice. Leaving them almost no opportunity to resist.

The door cracked closed behind them with a loud heavy sound and the ominous lock clicked. There was no way back.

"So the trials begin now?" One of the acolyte mages asked. A young female with a petite frame.

Valeria turned to her, the golden shade of her lips arching into a devious grin.

"You mean their execution, Young one?"

The female acolyte’s eyes widened in shock. The others simply nodded in understanding.
