Issei

“Ise-san. Are you okay?”

I was woken up from a terrible nightmare by Asia’s voice.

I quickly looked around the room as I realized that what I had seen was just a dream.

My chest heaved as my breathing slowly came back to normal.

I rubbed my face and looked at the clock on the wall to check the time.

It was still a little while before it was time to get up for school.

Asia was watching me with concern.

She was sitting next to me in her pajamas, blinking the remnants of sleep from her eyes.

I must have done something to wake her during my nightmare.

I recalled the dream I had just woken from.

Asia had been dressed in a white kimono and told me she was going to become a bride.

My parents were crying tears of joy for her.

Buchou and Akeno-san were there too, and they offered emotional well-wishes to Asia.

Then I saw the groom.

It was Diodora Astaroth.

The handsome high-class Devil who had proposed to Asia when we returned from the Underworld.

He greeted my parents and told them that Asia would be in good hands with him.

My parents and even Bucho and Akeno-san agreed.

Then he had carried Asia away in a bridal carry as I tried to chase after them.

But they kept getting further away until I woke up.

I looked at Asia, who was still watching me with concern.

“…Asia,” I said, my voice sounding hoarse. “You’re still here. I had an awful dream.”

Asia blinked, then gave me a gentle smile.

“I’m right here Ise-san. I’m not going anywhere. I woke you because you were calling out to me in your sleep.”

I felt myself tear up at the memory of her leaving me.

I rubbed my eyes to clear them.

“In my dream, you got married. It was awful and far more painful to watch than I could have imagined.” I said.

She tilted her head with a slightly troubled expression.

Then she gave me another small smile.

“You worry too much. I’m not going to get married for a while, so you don’t need to worry.”

I leaned forward and hugged her.

She stiffened and let out a small surprised sound before quickly relaxing.

I felt her hug me back as she leaned her head on my shoulder.

“I think if you left, that I might die from loneliness,” I said.

Though I couldn’t see it, I could imagine Asia’s soft smile when she spoke.

“That would be very serious, Ise-san. Then I’ll make sure to stay with you,” she said earnestly.

She was too good to me.

She really was like family, and I wanted to be a good onii-san for her.

We stayed like that for a little while.

Then I heard what sounded like a knock at the room's door.

Asia and I separated.

I looked over at the door.

I looked back at Asia, who also looked confused.

“I don’t know if that was our door. Is someone knocking at Yuki’s door?” Asia wondered aloud.

It had sounded faint, but I didn’t know if it was someone knocking at a different door or someone knocking quietly on mine.

“I’ll go check,” I said.

I got up and crossed the room.

When I got to the door, I turned the handle and swung it open to see Koneko-chan standing in the hall by Yuki-san’s door.

She was wearing an oversized shirt and had a blanket loosely wrapped around her.

She turned to me when I opened the door.

“...Good morning, Issei-senpai.”

I blinked at her casual greeting.

“Good morning, Koneko-chan… What are you doing so early in the morning? It’s barely time for us to get up.”

Asia walked up next to me and gave Koneko-chan a small wave.

“Good morning, Koneko-chan!”

One of Koneko-chan’s cat ears twitched before she gave her a small nod.

“…Good morning, Asia-senpai.”

She adjusted her blanket and let out a small yawn.

“I came to see if Yuki-senpai wanted to help me make breakfast for everyone,” Koneko-chan continued.

“That sounds so nice! Maybe I can join and help!” Asia said excitedly.

I searched my head.

“I didn’t know you could cook, Koneko-chan. Also, breakfast shouldn’t be for a while, right?” I asked, slightly confused.

“…I know how to cook a little. I was hoping that Yuki-senpai could teach me more,” Koneko-chan said, looking to the side. “And I was planning on hanging out in her room for a bit before we went to make breakfast.”

I looked at her pajama-like clothes and the blanket wrapped around her.

She shifted in place and flushed slightly, her tail shifting behind her.

I didn’t really get why she was looking so flustered, but I didn’t get a lot of things when it came to girls.

So I didn’t bother to point it out.

Then Yuki-san’s door opened.

She stood in the doorway already wearing her school uniform.

Her hair looked slightly damp, as though she had finished showering and come to the door before she could finish drying it.

She raised a brow at all of us.

“What’s everyone doing up already?” She asked.

She noticed that Koenko-chan was in her pajamas and had turned to talk to us.

It looked like she realized something.

“Oh, were you asking Issei-san if you could sleep in his room like Asia and Rias-Buchou do? I hadn’t expected that.” She said, tilting her head slightly.

Koneko-chan frowned at her.

“…No,” she said quickly. “I wanted to talk to you, Yuki-senpai. I knocked on your door, and Asia-senpai and Issei-senpai heard and came to see what was going on.”

Yuki-san blinked.

“Oh, I was showering, so I didn’t hear. You could have waited until breakfast, Koneko-chan. You didn’t have to get up early for that.” Yuki-san said with a small smile.

“She said that she wanted to make breakfast for everyone and said she wanted your help,” Asia said with a smile. “If you’d like, I can help too!”

Yuki-san looked to Asia, then back to Koneko-chan after Asia finished speaking.

“…Asia-senpai is right. I wanted to make breakfast together with you. I figured we could talk for a bit before we went to the kitchen.” Koneko-chan said.

Yuki-san nodded and then opened her door wider and stepped back.

“That sounds nice. You can come in, and we can head to the kitchen in a little bit,” Yuki-san said to Koneko-chan.

Then she turned to Asia.

“And we will let you know when we are going to start making food.”

“Great!” Asia replied warmly.

Koneko-chan walked into Yuki-san’s room.

Yuki-san nodded to me.

“Good morning, Issei-san. We will see you in a bit.”

“Yep. See you later, then.” I replied, waving lazily.

I was still kind of out of it from my nightmare and was still half asleep, so I didn’t really feel like thinking about how Koneko-chan was acting.

Yuki-san turned and shut her door behind her.

I looked to Asia as we stood in my doorway.

“Well, that was interesting. Let’s go back to bed for a bit.” I said.

We walked back into the room and the door shut behind us.

Asia sat on the bed, and I flopped down face first onto it.

“I’m glad that nightmare I had about you getting married was only a dream.

“I already said I don't plan on getting married anytime soon, Ise-san. I’m not going to be leaving you.” Asia said with a gentle smile.

“It seems like that won’t be stopping some people from trying.” A voice called from behind us.

Buchou was in a towel as she stood by the desk in my room.

The door to the attached bathroom was open, and I could see the steamed mirror from my bed.

Akeno-san had once told me that Buchou was a bit of a clean freak and liked to take multiple showers a day.

She always got up early to take one before we got ready for school, and today didn’t seem to be any different.

She walked over and sat on the bed next to me.

She held a stack of papers in her hand.

Her expression as she read them was tense.

“Are those all letters?” I asked.

Buchou sighed tiredly with a nod.

“Yes, they are. If you hadn’t guessed, they are all from Diodora Astaroth. Besides the flowers, food, and gifts, he’s started sending love letters as well now too. The gifts have gotten larger and more extravagant despite Asia having me send them back every time.”

I clenched my fists.

“Seriously, what the hell is wrong with that guy!?”

Asia looked worried as we spoke about Diodora.

She didn’t know what to do with his attention and gifts and apologized to us each time something showed up at our doorstep.

“I-I’m sorry,” she said. “Because of me—”

“No!” I cut in immediately. “It’s not your fault, Asia! It’s because of that guy who can’t take a hint!”

“Exactly,” Buchou said. “He’s the problem. I’ve tried telling him you’re not interested, but he is still persistently pursuing a marriage with you.”

Asia gave a small nod, but she still looked troubled.

That made me even angrier.

This had been going on since we got back from the underworld.

Even after telling him she wasn’t interested, at the train station he was still pursuing this engagement.

And that had been weeks ago.

Two weeks have passed since we came back from our vacation.

We were now in the second term of our second year at Kuoh.

Since we’d gotten back, besides Serafall-sama’s request, things had been pretty quiet.

That film shoot had been a lot, but apparently Serafall-sama had been happy with our efforts.

She seemed particularly interested in Yuki-san.

I had still been unconscious from our fight scene when we left, so we were already back in the club room when I woke up.

But other than that, things had been normal, besides that bastard continuing to bother Asia.

It almost seemed like he thought he could wear Asia down with enough gifts and signs of affection until she said yes.

But Asia was only becoming more distressed by it.

Asia was like family to me.

So even if he was a rich and handsome high-class Devil, I wouldn’t give Asia up to him.

I never would.

Yuki

Summer break had ended, and we were back to school in our second week back in class.

Despite that, Kuoh Academy felt the same as it had before we had left.

Most windows were still left open.

Warm air continued to flow into the classroom as students settled back into their practiced routines.

People gathered around their friends' desks.

A group of girls chatted about the trips they had taken during the break.

Another group of boys was still complaining about the homework we had been assigned over the break,  despite more work already being assigned in class.

Outside, you could hear people talking about and practicing for the upcoming sports festival.

That was the next big thing many of the students were looking forward to.

There were some changes in the students in class, though.

Some boys had come back with different haircuts and clothing, and there were a few girls who had completely changed their style and makeup.

It looked like they had tried to use the break to reinvent themselves.

They were young enough that the short break felt long enough to try to be perceived as a different person when we all returned to class.

Some of them truly wanted to be different.

Some of them only wanted the attention it would draw.

Either way, there were new accessories, makeup, hairstyles, and tans on my classmates.

I sat at my desk with my back turned towards the windows.

I was listening to Kiryuu-san talk while I half-listened to her tell me about her summer break.

She had visited family in Kyüshü and spent some time on the beach.

She was currently telling me about some of the guys that had caught her interest during her trip.

That was why I was only half paying attention to her as she spoke.

She could be a bit of a perv when she spoke about boys sometimes.

When she really got excited, she became like a female version of Issei.

“— I know he was older, but you should have seen how his… Yuki-san, are you ignoring me?” Kiryuu-san asked, pushing her glasses up on her nose and giving me a look.

I sighed.

“You were talking about one of the guys that you saw at the beach. The college-age one with the sunglasses. Before that, you were talking about whether Ineta-san’s new haircut looks good,” I said, leaning my head on my hand.

She blinked.

“My bad. You didn't seem like you were listening and hadn’t said anything in a while, so I made an assumption,” she said, rubbing the back of her head.

I was barely paying attention when she spoke earlier.

I was lucky she hadn’t asked for any more details beyond that.

I liked Kiryuu-san, but she could go on and on with her gossip.

Some of it was interesting, but most wasn’t.

We had ended up speaking more than I might have expected over the last few months.

She was a good person, despite her lewd interests.

But she was a bit too observant sometimes.

She tended to notice things that others usually would miss, and had a tendency to watch people for fun.

Thankfully, she knew not to push as far as she could with things, unless she was trying to entertain herself or it related to relationships.

“So what about you? You haven’t said anything about your summer. So what did you do for your break?”

Kiryuu-san tapped her pen against her desk and leaned a little closer.

“I traveled. The Occult Research Club went on another trip together.” I replied.

She immediately looked interested as she leaned a bit closer.

“Another trip? Where did you all go this time?”

“We visited Rias’s family home. And then had a few meetings with the club and other members of the occult community.”

“Really? I thought her family was European or something. And what did you do there besides your lame occult stuff?”

I rolled my eyes at her comment.

“Her parents aren’t from the country, and they have a lot of homes, apparently. The one we stayed at was massive. We even took a private train to get there. And we spent some time exploring the mountains near their estate. We also met up with some of the student council members as well. Rias-Buchou and Sona-Kaichou are childhood friends, so she stopped by for a bit.”

That was all true, just not exactly correct.

Kiryyu-san looked impressed.

“I knew that Rias-senpai’s family was wealthy, but not that much,” she said.

Then she leaned in closer and spoke in a dramatically hushed voice.

“But I’m more interested in any drama that happened. Your club has some of the most beautiful and popular girls in the school in it and one of the most notorious perverts, for some reason. With seven girls and two teenage boys, something must have happened.”

Her glasses gleamed as she tilted her head down as she spoke.

I paused.

I recalled pulling Akeno against me in the hot springs bath.

Rias sitting on my lap as I held her face while she kissed me.

Koneko and I sitting together quietly as I pet her cat ears.

Asia, flustered and nervous, pinned beneath me.

Then Koneko pinned under me with a mark on her neck.

Issei poking both of Rias’s breasts.

Koneko sitting on my lap on the train and leaning against me comfortably.

“Not really,” I said. “We all spent time together and grew closer. Koneko-chan and I spent a lot of time together, and Rias-Buchou and Issei seemed closer too.”

She narrowed her eyes at me.

“I feel like that’s not even close to the whole truth, and you’re hiding something juicy from me, but whatever. So you and Toujou-chan are close? That’s good. It’s nice to build relationships with our kohai,” she said as she leaned back and relaxed into the seat next to me. “But you’re saying Hyoudou got closer to Rias-senpai? I really don’t get what you girls in the Occult Research Club see in him.”

I frowned.

“Issei-san is a good friend, but that’s it. Please don’t lump me in with the other girls,” I said.

Kiryuu-san smirked at me.

“Sure, that’s all it is.” Her smirk grew as I glared at her. “Anyways, who do you think he’ll end up with?”

I let out a small scoff.

“With how dense he is, I have no clue. There are multiple girls blatantly interested in him, and he hasn’t realized it in the slightest.” I glanced over at Issei and his friend Motohama-san a few desks over as I spoke. “At this point, I think that it would take someone kissing him and telling him directly for him to figure it out.”

Kiryuu-san followed my gaze, and then looked back at me again.

“I’ve seen Rias-senpai and Asia around him, so I won’t question their interest in one of the three perverts, since I’ll never understand it, but he can’t be that bad, can he? I know that Asia is timid and hesitant, but he must realize she’s interested, right?”

I shook my head.

“Not a clue.”

She glanced over at Issei again.

It was then that the raised voices of Issie and Motohama-san reached us.

The third member of the perverted trio, Matsuda-san, was missing at the moment.

“—summer is the time for plenty of changes. And it’s also time for high schoolers to graduate from their virginity.” Motohama-san said dramatically.

Kiryuu-san and I glanced at each other before she scooted closer so that she could hear them better.

I sighed and leaned back in my seat.

I might as well be entertained before Kiryuu-san inevitably drags me over to their conversation.

It was definitely going to be dumb and perverse, but at least it would be more interesting to listen to Kiryuu-san go on about boys.
