High School Student with Immortal Race System

Chapter 207 - 206: You’ve Planted Too Many Flags

Wan Mengjie exchanged a look with her two teammates. To be honest, "Nightwalkers" weren’t exactly rare at Jiangti.

It was said that 20% of Jiangti students had tried swallowing their pride to take on part-time jobs late at night...

But they were very particular about their teammates’ trustworthiness and strength.

After all, the missions were all risky...

But... the Jianghuai Champion Scholar was another matter entirely.

There was no real tangible benefit, but it was a matter of prestige.

Yang Shen played the part of an innocent newbie, as if someone else had scared the piss out of Wan Mengjie that night.

"If you’ll have me, seniors, I can work for free. I’ll just count it as gaining some life experience."

"You’re the Champion Scholar, shouldn’t you be loaded? I even saw your ad!"

Yang Shen thought for a moment and said, "Then what’s the ’loan’ price?"

The three of them understood in an instant.

Another loan warrior. And as the Champion Scholar, he must have taken out even bigger loans than them.

The three were hesitant at first, but after some discussion, they didn’t outright refuse him. An extra person meant extra strength, and this underclassman didn’t seem weak. He even seemed willing to follow orders.

And he’d work for free...

And so, Yang Shen joined the discussion with the status of "rookie candidate."

It wasn’t hard to see that these "Nightwalkers" from Jiangti were still quite amateurish, with little sense of secrecy.

At least, the pantyhose trio was like this. Maybe every team had a different style.

Yang Shen: "By the way, what realm is the person you’re investigating? I’m not sure if I’m up for it."

Wan Mengjie said, "Uh... we’re not sure, but the informant said... possibly Early-stage True Gang..."

The effeminate-looking man jumped to his feet. "Why didn’t you say so earlier? Is this a job we can even handle?"

’Isn’t this something you should have led with? I don’t ask, so you don’t tell, is that it?’

Three Late-stage Marrow Refining cultivators investigating an Early-stage True Gang expert who kills without batting an eye.

’Are we just going over there to pad his KDA?’

Wan Mengjie argued, "He didn’t go for the kill last time! That proves he’s not some psycho who just attacks everyone on sight. At worst, he just dresses a little weird. I actually thought he was quite polite."

Yang Shen: "I think she’s right. What if he’s a handsome, well-mannered gentleman?"

He had smoothly inserted himself into the discussion, as if his participation was already a given.

Seeing Yang Shen back her up, Wan Mengjie grew more confident with every word. "The enemy is in the open, and we’re in the shadows. Even if we do run into him, maybe we can chat a bit, catch up, you know?! And then we’d have our intel, right?"

She tapped her own head. "You’ve got to use your brain for this stuff. That Helmet Monster doesn’t know what we’re planning!"

Yang Shen: "Exactly, exactly. A brilliant insight, senior."

Wan Mengjie slammed the table. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained! We don’t have any other jobs anyway. We’ll just stake out a few suspicious areas. It’s worth a shot, whether we find anything or not."

It sounded like the risk was manageable, so after a long hesitation, the other two agreed.

Or rather, they figured it would most likely just be a waste of time. Jianghuai was huge. Even though he had previously appeared at the border of the Black Tortoise and Yellow Dragon Districts, the probability of running into him again was still low.

But they were at their wits’ end, so the three of them decided to take action that very night.

Yang Shen said he would join them.

He wasn’t the least bit interested in the trio, but he was very interested in who was investigating him...

And as Yang Shen was leaving, the gatekeeper from before gave him a business card.

"If you want to do these Nightwalker gigs regularly, call this number. Someone will recommend a truly suitable team for you."

"A truly suitable team?"

The gatekeeper’s lip curled. "Those three... they’re scrubs."

Yang Shen picked it up and looked. It only had a phone number and two words.

"Night Owl."

Yang Shen smiled and accepted it for the time being.

’It seems... the so-called "Nightwalkers" might also be part of Jiangti’s "talent acquisition system."’

’Or rather, ambitious people wouldn’t give up on this pool of talent and would naturally extend their influence here.’

’It’s a bit like how the Martial Arts Families operate.’

——————————

「Jianghuai City, in the dead of night.」

In a dimly lit office, cigarette butts piled up like a mountain in an ashtray.

Luo Sheng, a cigarette dangling from his lips, sifted through the files in his hands. He was searching through all registered Martial Artists in and around Jianghuai City for anyone who had mastered Martial Arts, Fist Intent, or overseas Martial Arts Techniques related to "fire."

But the results weren’t very clear.

Because of his own formidable strength, he hadn’t been hit by the opponent’s flames even once that night despite fighting two of them. But because of that, he hadn’t been able to determine the specific properties of the flames.

And "fire," or rather "high temperatures," was not particularly rare in the world of Martial Arts.

For example, the main heritage of the Boaqui Chief United Nations was the "Fire Worship Martial Artist," and almost all of them used fire... As one of the world’s foremost bustling metropolises, Jianghuai also had its share of foreign Martial Artists.

So he had to search for clues among hundreds of files...

What Luo Sheng could confirm... was that his opponent was likely very young, no older than 25, because the person that night had been bare-chested.

The color wasn’t deep.

Luo Sheng took a drag from his cigarette, the smoke drifting up into the lamplight.

He had already narrowed the scope down to 10 people... Looking at the files before him, he was surprised to see a familiar face.

The young man who had been implicated in the "Training Camp Incident" and later became the college entrance exam’s Champion Scholar...

The suspicious part was... he had clear, on-the-record connections to the Rebel Species.

But logically speaking, it seemed unreasonable for a Champion Scholar to be involved in such matters. And his power had improved far too quickly. Luo Sheng sensed that the person he fought already possessed power approaching the advanced stage of True Gang.

’Most importantly... how could he have turned Long Jiu... and how could he possibly have learned Overlapping Waves...’

The interesting thing was, the security level for the college entrance exam records was extremely high. You could see what happened if you were there, but it was incredibly difficult to access the records after the fact if you weren’t.

Even criminal police couldn’t access them unless they had clear evidence that the person was a suspect and it was absolutely necessary to pull the records.

Otherwise, he would have known that Yang Shen had used "Overlapping Waves" during the exam... which would have narrowed his search considerably.

Just as he was about to pull out the files on the "Jinkang Pharmacy incident" to review them again, there was a knock at his office door.

His partner, Zheng Tao, walked in. "Old Luo, I’ve got some inside info. Looks like we’ve got a mission coming up."

Luo Sheng frowned. "From the look on your face, it’s more trouble. I just got back from vacation..."

He was busy... He had finally gotten a rare period of peace and wanted to get to the bottom of the mystery man from that night.

Zheng Tao waved a hand, dispersing the thick smoke. "What’s the use in telling me? The higher-ups are the ones handing out assignments. By the way, did you know you got another anonymous complaint filed against you?"

Luo Sheng sneered, "Did I break the record for ’most complaints’?"

"It’s your own record, what’s there to break."

If Yang Shen were here, he would probably be speechless...

’No wonder there was no reaction. So this guy gets reported every day...’

Would there be an investigation? Oh, you bet. The procedures would absolutely be followed.

But the complaint that the internal affairs department was currently processing was one filed against Luo Sheng from last year...

"Just tell me about the mission."

After sitting down, Zheng Tao glanced at the scattered files on the desk and said, "An old friend of mine in the military let it slip. The military plans to borrow some personnel, possibly for a trip to the Vast Sea. Since we’ve been there before, I think it’s highly likely they’ll send us again."

Luo Sheng lifted his gloomy eyes. "The Vast Sea again? What are the Rebel Species up to now?"

Zheng Tao spread his hands, indicating he didn’t know either.

About five months ago, he and Luo Sheng had received a mission. Someone had discovered traces of the Rebel Species in some of the ports along the Vast Sea Center shipping route.

Normally, Yanhua’s criminal police wouldn’t need to get involved in matters on the high seas, but it was said that the ones who had shown themselves were high-ranking members of the Rebel Species’ Yanhua branch... connected to many major cases.

It was even possible they were connected to the previous "abnormal Sea Beast movements." So, Zheng Tao and Luo Sheng led a team to track them.

But after drifting at sea for nearly a month, they came back empty-handed.

Then, just as they returned to Yanhua, feeling utterly dejected, and were disembarking at Jinshui Port to get a good meal, they ran right into the "Jinkang Pharmacy" incident.

Even though they didn’t really do anything, just stood outside the "black sphere" and watched, as people in public service...

Watching? Even watching requires a report!

What an unforeseen disaster...

Going out with Luo Sheng always gave him a feeling of bad luck, and that feeling was especially strong this year.

Zheng Tao sighed.

"We can’t know the mission details in advance, but if they need support from criminal police, it’s obviously not for a lack of firepower. It’s probably some kind of investigation."

Luo Sheng flicked his cigarette ash. "What’s there to investigate in the great sea? Fish?"

Zheng Tao shrugged. "I wouldn’t know about that. But I think it’s related to the ’Tattooed Guests’... When I was writing the report on the pharmacy incident last time, I thought it was too much of a coincidence. We were kept busy chasing our tails in the Vast Sea for a month, but then right after, those guys pull a few freaks out of the ocean..."

Zheng Tao paused slightly, observing Luo Sheng’s expression.

’Such a coincidence. Did we miss all the clues?’

However, Luo Sheng showed no reaction. Zheng Tao smiled.

"Sigh... I’ll have to go beg my wife and kids for forgiveness again... I was supposed to celebrate my wife’s birthday."

Luo Sheng lit another cigarette and sighed. "Fine, let’s go. All the dirty, tiring work falls on us."

Zheng Tao laughed. "You say that like you could refuse. Once you join the service, you go where you’re told. Don’t overthink it."

"We should have some time to prepare. This is a big operation; a whole team is being sent over. They’re gathering forces from all sides. I feel like we won’t be back for a month or two... I’ll probably miss my daughter’s birthday. I’ll just have to wait until we’re back to celebrate my wife’s."

Luo Sheng nodded, feeling nothing. He was all alone in the world.

Zheng Tao stood up. "I’m getting too old for this grind. I’m planning to apply for a transfer to a second-line post next year. Get some more time with my wife and kid. I’ve already missed too much of my daughter’s childhood."

"Oh, right. When we get back, I’ll introduce you to a girl..."

Luo Sheng immediately held up a hand. "Don’t say it. Seriously..."

"What’s wrong?"

"You’re already covered in death flags."

Zheng Tao fell silent, then slapped his forehead. "You’re right. That is a bit dangerous. I take it back."

Luo Sheng watched his partner of many years leave, a trace of emptiness in his gloomy eyes.

A moment later, he stood up and headed out. He probably didn’t have enough time to investigate slowly anymore. He needed to find an informant.

It would be a hassle, but...

He had to find Long Jiu.
