After passing through a door, Wan Mengjie found herself in a long, descending passageway, clearly leading to a basement.

The white walls on either side were bisected by a stripe of green paint, the kind common decades ago. After descending about two stories, she reached another iron door.

A small peephole on the iron door slid open. Someone glanced out, then let Wan Mengjie in.

Inside was a place like a lounge. It wasn’t choked with smoke, but it was certainly dim. Students sat together in twos and threes. There were also a few simple, makeshift stalls selling snacks and drinks. The space was about two or three hundred square meters.

If the lights were brighter, it would have looked much like a student activity room, but this was a special, hidden area within Jiangti.

Ostensibly, it was the activity space for the "Night Owl Club," but in reality, it was the gathering place for most of Jiangti’s "after-dark activities" participants.

The Nightwalker Club.

The location had one convenient feature: it was very close to the campus’s outer wall. Some senior from who-knows-what generation had used Special Martial Techniques or perhaps Fist Intent to dig a tunnel.

Most of them passed through here when leaving for or returning from missions. Over time, it had become a regular gathering spot for everyone.

Wan Mengjie went straight to her companions in a corner. They were two young men—one effeminate with long hair, the other tall and powerfully built.

"Jie, what’s the word? Did the info broker pay up?"

Wan Mengjie chuckled. "Someone actually bought the intel on that Helmet Monster. One hundred thousand!"

The faces of the two men lit up. "For real?! Does that mean we get a cut? My loan payment is seriously overdue!"

Wan Mengjie gave a dry laugh. "Well, not exactly... We already owed the info broker a hundred thousand from our last failed mission. This just covers the debt..."

The two looked at each other, all the energy draining from their bodies as they leaned back. "Sigh... Unbelievable... Fine. It’s better not to earn anything than to be in debt..."

Wan Mengjie cleared her throat. "That’s not how the math works... We owed the info broker a hundred thousand, and we sold new intel for a hundred thousand, but Mr. Fatty takes a 30% commission on new intel... So strictly speaking, our debt has only been reduced. We still owe thirty thousand."

The effeminate man collapsed completely onto the sofa, covering his face. "I’m so tired. Just let the world burn..."

Wan Mengjie quickly added, "But he agreed to let us defer it! We can pay it off after our next successful mission. I’ve already accepted a new one."

The sturdy man also curled into a ball, speaking listlessly. "What mission? With the way things are, the harder we work, the poorer we get. I might as well go be a lackey for some Legitimate Son of a Martial Arts Family. Some jerk in my class sucked up to one and has already jumped seventy or eighty ranks."

Wan Mengjie’s expression turned serious. "No! Have you forgotten? Why did the three of us come together in the first place!"

The effeminate man raised his hand. "I was about to be expelled and forced to change majors. A senior told me about this part-time gig..."

The sturdy man said, "I just thought you had nice legs and looked great in stockings."

Wan Mengjie: "No! You’re wrong! Our core values are the same! We all have Dignified and Proper hearts. We refuse to give up our dignity to suck up to those rich guys and gals!"

The effeminate man said helplessly, "Just tell us about the new job."

Wan Mengjie took a deep breath. "It’s related to the last one... It’s about the Helmet Monster and the woman with him. The person who bought our intel wants more. Since we’ve seen them once, the job was offered to us first."

The sturdy man immediately shot back, "Are you crazy? That guy’s a ruthless killer with blood on his hands! He chopped a man’s head off! That’s a whole different league from us college students doing part-time jobs. And now you want to get closer?"

The effeminate man chimed in, "No way. The intel said that foreigner that night was equivalent to the Early Innate Stage, about our level, and he died without even making a sound. I’m not doing it. Absolutely not."

Wan Mengjie said, "The pay is one hundred and fifty thousand. And since we were the ones who brought back the initial intel, there’s no commission this time. We can each get fifty thousand!"

The effeminate man immediately sat bolt upright, his gaze firm.

"I’m in! High risk, high reward. We just need to get the intel, right?"

"Right. We don’t need a direct confrontation. We just have to stake out areas where he might appear, then follow him if we spot him. It’ll take a bit of luck, but there’s no danger."

They were already caught in a vicious cycle. With no money, their strength fell behind. Without strength, they couldn’t even compete for tutoring jobs. As third-years, they were teetering on the edge between graduating and dropping out.

In the outside world, Late-stage Marrow Refining was a decent level. But at Jiangti, it was the bottom of the barrel.

The final push for the college entrance exams had exhausted their families’ finances, followed by the endless high-pressure burden of loan repayments.

There were many students like them at Jiangti; they just had different ways of making money.

Some were tutors, some were leg massagers, and some were Nightwalkers.

Perhaps they could just coast to graduation and still have a much better starting point than ordinary people when looking for a job. But they had made it into Jiangti. Who didn’t have fantasies of their own?

Just then, a voice came from behind them. "Senior, could you tell me about this mission you’re discussing?"

They turned to see a handsome face that was both strange and somewhat familiar, smiling and full of curiosity.

Yang Shen: "I’m new here. I heard you guys have missions?"

He had guessed that under the immense pressure at Jiangti, Life would surely find a way.

’Besides what’s available on campus, plenty of people must be trying to find resources outside...’

’Given the fantastical nature of Jianghuai Night... it’s likely that Jiangti students are heavily involved in "after-dark activities."’

’After all, they might be miserable on campus, but frankly, in the outside world, many of them would already be considered minor experts...’

’You think being Innate is no big deal because you’re inside Jiangti.’

’It’s like thinking the opposite sex isn’t worth much just because you’re incredibly good-looking.’

’Any somewhat capable undergraduate at Jiangti will reach the Innate stage before graduation. After all, if you don’t reach Innate in four years, you drop out. By comparison, most members of an organization like the Rebel Species are at the Marrow Refining or even just Bone Training stage...’

Yang Shen suspected that just as Jianghuai’s nightlife was a "different city" unto itself, Jiangti probably had its own "little secrets" hidden beneath the campus.

And so, just a moment ago, Yang Shen had followed Wan Mengjie and entered this basement.

The second door was guarded. Seeing Yang Shen’s unfamiliar face, the guard had refused him entry.

But when Yang Shen identified himself as the new Champion Scholar of Martial Arts and explained he’d heard about part-time work here, the guard made a phone call to someone and then let him pass.

Overall, this "hub" had its own rules, but they weren’t strictly enforced.

It could only be considered a "bar" of sorts.

In fact, Yang Shen highly suspected that the so-called Jiangti Nightwalkers were an open secret, tacitly approved by the school, and perhaps even secretly managed by Jiangti itself.

He was, in fact, correct.

After all, in an era of peace, no matter how much the school hyped up "real combat," it was only ever an approximation.

Many "controlled risk" missions were intentionally released to give students a chance to gain some experience points.

Those middlemen might be a bit shady, but they would never actually give illegal or discipline-breaking missions to Jiangti students.

Because they were afraid Jiangti would wipe them out. This was an unspoken agreement.

The jobs they gave out were all small gigs in a gray area, like investigating criminals, gathering evidence of infidelity, or seizing already-prohibited items. Some of the things seized might have even been turned over to Yanhua...

And then, Yang Shen heard them conspiring so loudly about... him.

Wan Mengjie was puzzled for a moment. She’d become so numb from handing out flyers that she was practically face-blind. But now, taking a closer look... ’Isn’t this year’s Jianghuai Champion Scholar?’

"Junior... do you know what we do? You must be new, right?"

Yang Shen smiled. "New, yes, but I’ve heard a little about what you do. I’m also very interested in earning some extra cash."

"Who is this ’Helmet Monster’ you were just talking about? Sounds pretty cool. Also... who wants intel on him?"

Yang Shen was all smiles, but his eyes held a thoughtful glint.

’He and Long Jiu haven’t gone out prowling since that last incident...’

’Their previous actions had one and only one goal: hunting Rebel Species. They had never clashed or dealt with other Nightwalkers.’

’So if someone wanted to investigate him... he had two guesses.’

’One was a reaction from the Rebel Species’ Main Altar.’

’The other...’

’Luo Sheng.’
