Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

The passage seemed to breathe.

Kael walked at the front, shield raised and sword ready. Mara followed closely, her crossbow loaded. Ethan kept watching behind them while Adrian carried the old documents against his chest.

The pale creatures followed without making a sound.

Red light pulsed from cracks in the walls.

Mara whispered, “I don’t like this place.”

“Neither do I,” Ethan replied.

Kael stopped.

Everyone froze.

A low heartbeat echoed through the corridor.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

Adrian looked at the walls.

“That isn’t a heartbeat.”

Another pulse shook the floor.

“It’s machinery.”

They continued until the corridor opened into a massive underground hall.

Ancient metal pillars surrounded a circular platform. Thick cables disappeared into the stone ceiling. At the center stood a glass chamber filled with dark red liquid.

Something was floating inside.

Mara raised her crossbow.

“What is that?”

Adrian slowly approached the chamber.

“I don’t know.”

Kael stared through the glass.

The shape inside looked human.

Long hair drifted through the red liquid.

Then its eyes opened.

Mara stepped backward.

“It’s alive.”

The glass suddenly cracked.

Adrian shouted, “Get away!”

The chamber exploded.

Red liquid flooded across the floor.

A figure crawled from the broken glass.

It was a young woman.

Her skin was pale, and strange black veins covered her neck and arms. She struggled to stand, breathing as though she had just awakened from a hundred-year sleep.

Kael lowered his sword slightly.

The woman looked directly at him.

“Kael.”

He froze.

“Who are you?”

She touched her face as if trying to remember.

“Lena.”

Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

“Lena?”

She looked at him.

“You know me?”

Adrian’s hands began trembling.

“She was listed in the research records.”

Mara looked between them.

“Who is she?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Subject K-28.”

Kael’s expression hardened.

“Then I’m K-27.”

Lena slowly nodded.

“You were the first.”

Kael stepped closer.

“What happened to us?”

Lena looked toward the ceiling.

“They wanted to create soldiers who couldn’t die.”

“And the zombies?”

“They weren’t supposed to exist.”

A violent roar echoed through the mountain.

Lena’s eyes filled with fear.

“He is coming.”

“Who?” Ethan asked.

She whispered, “The one who created us.”

Suddenly, every light in the chamber turned black.

A deep voice echoed through the darkness.

“Lena.”

She immediately collapsed to her knees.

Kael stepped between her and the darkness.

The First Infected appeared at the far end of the hall.

But this time, Kael noticed something different.

The creature wasn’t looking at him.

It was looking at Lena.

“You should never have awakened,” it growled.

Kael raised his sword.

“You’re not taking her.”

The creature smiled.

“You still don’t understand, Kael.”

It pointed toward the blood-filled chamber.

“You were never created to fight the dead.”

Kael tightened his grip.

“Then what was I created for?”

The creature’s smile disappeared.

“To lead them.”

A deafening roar erupted from beneath the mountain.

The walls began cracking.

Thousands of undead voices rose from the darkness.

And Kael realized the army outside had never been hunting him.

They had been waiting for him.
