Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 2605: Story 2606: The Army Within

The mountain trembled like a living beast.

Cracks spread across the floor of the underground chamber. Dust fell from the ceiling, and the red liquid surrounding the broken chamber began flowing toward a deep opening beneath the platform.

Kael stood between Lena and the First Infected.

“Lead them?” he asked.

The creature smiled.

“You were made to command the dead.”

Kael tightened his grip on his sword.

“I command no one.”

A deafening roar answered him.

From the tunnels behind them came thousands of footsteps.

The pale creatures suddenly moved.

They surrounded Lena.

Mara raised her crossbow.

“Stay away from her!”

One creature lunged.

Mara fired.

The bolt struck its eye, and it crashed against the floor.

Ethan opened fire at the others.

Kael charged forward.

His shield smashed into one creature, then his sword cut through another. The pale monsters attacked with terrifying speed, but Kael fought like a storm.

Lena suddenly screamed.

“Stop!”

Everyone froze.

The creatures immediately backed away.

Kael looked at her.

“How did you do that?”

Lena stared at her hands.

“I don’t know.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Yes, you do.”

Lena looked at him.

“You remember.”

Her face tightened.

“I remember a laboratory.”

She closed her eyes.

“Doctors. Machines. Blood.”

Her breathing became faster.

“And a man.”

Kael asked, “Who?”

Lena opened her eyes.

“Dr. Marcus Veyr.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You’re sure?”

“He created the experiments.”

Kael looked toward the First Infected.

“And him?”

Lena shook her head.

“He was the first failure.”

The creature snarled.

“Liar.”

For the first time, fear appeared in its voice.

Adrian understood.

“Veyr created the infection.”

Lena nodded.

“But the First Infected escaped before the final experiment.”

Kael stared at the monster.

“Then why does it control the dead?”

Lena whispered, “Because Veyr gave it something else.”

“What?”

“His blood.”

Silence filled the chamber.

Suddenly, the First Infected raised both hands.

Every zombie in the tunnels screamed.

The walls exploded.

A massive wave of undead poured into the hall.

“Move!” Ethan shouted.

The group ran toward the opposite passage.

Kael stayed behind, cutting down anything that came near them.

Mara fired until her crossbow was empty.

Ethan used his rifle until only a few bullets remained.

Adrian pulled Lena through the doorway.

Then Kael saw something moving among the horde.

A man.

Not a zombie.

He wore an old laboratory coat and walked calmly through the undead.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

The man stopped beneath the red lights.

His face was pale, but his eyes were completely human.

He looked directly at Kael.

“Hello, K-27.”

Kael froze.

Adrian whispered, “No...”

The stranger smiled.

“My name is Marcus Veyr.”

Kael raised his sword.

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

Veyr laughed softly.

“I’ve been waiting three years for you to come home.”

Behind him, the undead parted.

And Kael realized the greatest danger beneath the mountain wasn’t the zombies.

It was the man who had created them.
