Kael stared at Marcus Veyr through the moving wall of undead.
For three years, he had believed the apocalypse had been a disaster caused by nature, war, or some unknown disease.
Now he was standing before the man responsible.
“You created them,” Kael said.
Veyr smiled.
“I created something far greater than zombies.”
The First Infected growled behind him.
Veyr glanced at the creature.
“That one was an accident.”
The monster suddenly charged.
Veyr raised one hand.
The entire horde stopped.
The First Infected froze only a few steps away.
Kael’s eyes widened.
“He controls it.”
Veyr looked toward Lena.
“And you brought K-28 back to me.”
Lena stepped behind Mara.
“You’ll never control me again.”
Veyr laughed.
“You misunderstand. You were never free.”
Kael moved forward.
His sword pointed directly at Veyr.
“Release them.”
Veyr looked amused.
“You still think this is about survival.”
He walked closer.
“The world was dying long before the infection. Governments were collapsing. Wars were spreading. Humanity was destroying itself.”
He touched his laboratory coat.
“I wanted to create a new species capable of surviving the end.”
Adrian shouted, “You murdered thousands!”
Veyr’s expression hardened.
“Sacrifices were necessary.”
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
“And I was one of your sacrifices?”
“No.”
Veyr smiled.
“You were my greatest success.”
The words struck Kael harder than any weapon.
Veyr continued.
“Your blood possesses a unique genetic response. The infected recognize it. They obey it.”
Kael shook his head.
“I don’t believe you.”
“You don’t have to.”
Veyr snapped his fingers.
A zombie stepped forward.
Kael raised his shield.
But instead of attacking, the creature dropped to its knees.
Then another did the same.
Then another.
Soon hundreds of undead were kneeling before Kael.
Mara stared in disbelief.
Ethan lowered his rifle.
“That’s impossible.”
Adrian whispered, “The blood compatibility was real.”
Kael looked at the kneeling army.
“No.”
He stepped backward.
“I won’t become their leader.”
Veyr’s smile disappeared.
“You don’t get to choose.”
Suddenly, Lena screamed.
Black veins spread across her arms.
She collapsed.
Kael rushed toward her.
“Lena!”
Veyr lifted his hand.
A thin metallic device on Lena’s wrist began glowing red.
“She was designed as your counterpart.”
Adrian grabbed the device.
“This is a control implant.”
Veyr nodded.
“K-28 can influence the infected. But only K-27 can command them completely.”
Kael turned toward Veyr.
“Remove it.”
“Make me.”
Kael charged.
The First Infected attacked at the same moment.
Steel collided with claws.
Kael blocked the creature’s strike and was thrown backward.
Mara and Ethan opened fire.
Veyr disappeared into the horde.
“Stop him!” Kael shouted.
Adrian dragged Lena toward the corridor.
“We have to leave!”
Kael rose.
The First Infected stood between him and his friends.
Then it whispered,
“Brother.”
Kael froze.
The creature lowered its claws.
For one strange moment, its monstrous face seemed almost human.
“Remember.”
A violent explosion shook the chamber.
The ceiling began collapsing.
Veyr’s laughter echoed through the smoke.
“Remember who you are, K-27!”
Kael looked at Lena, then at the collapsing tunnels.
He had spent three years fighting the dead.
Now he understood.
The real battle had only just begun.
