How To Survive A Cute Ghost Yandere
Chapter 115: Abyss Rift & CreatureThe ground trembled. A tree floated up into the air, then froze there, completely motionless. The earth, the sand, everything nearby shared the same fate, all of it hovering, frozen mid-air, spread across a fairly wide radius.
The air around them shifted, a cold that cut straight to the bone seeping in without pause. That unmistakable sense that something was deeply wrong couldn’t be ignored, sending cold sweat crawling down the backs of the students who’d been out here.
Crack! Crack—!
This kind of phenomenon wasn’t something they’d never seen before, not exactly. Their faces all drained pale at the sound of that cracking, the empty air itself tearing open into a black Rift, its interior seeming to hold something almost cosmic within it.
Deep dark colors, a swirling mix of spectrums bleeding together, scattered with tiny stars. The Rift swayed back and forth like drifting seaweed, and the space around it swayed right along with it, the air itself looking like it was melting under a bitter cold.
"Uh...! Ugh...! T-that’s an Abyss Rift!"
One student shouted in a panic. His face went pale as he scrambled up and looked around. There were three of them, one male student, and two female.
The three of them exchanged glances for a moment, unsure what to do. The next second, their bodies stiffened as a ragged breath rasped out from within the Rift, revealing a set of dark, purplish fingers clawing their way out.
Faces pale, none of them screamed, none of them tried to complain. Their weapons manifested in the air around them, and they braced themselves, sizing up their enemy.
"T-this is an Awakened Abyss Rift."
One of the girls spoke up. She’d already been studying it, and judging by the scale and the radius the Rift was warping, she could tell exactly what tier they were dealing with.
And if it really was an Abyss Rift, they should still have a real shot at fighting back and getting away.
"Get ready!"
The Abyss Creature stepped out. Its body was gaunt and withered, like a bare tree branch, its arms lined with dark purplish veins that writhed like long, crawling worms.
It stood over 200cm tall, moving with its back hunched. Its fingers ended in long, black claws, while its face dripped with a purplish drool that spilled out and melted the ground beneath it.
Looking at the three students, they clearly came from a mixed-year class. The male student had long hair, his body swelling and twitching, and rather than a conventional weapon, he wore a spiked gauntlet, while the two girls behind him were ranged casters. Each of them held their own magic staff, controlling their own distinct kind of magic.
—Kreughkreugkreugh!
The Abyss Creature muttered something under its breath. It raised its arm, hunching over even further, its bones twisting and grinding as it kept up its unsettling, jerking movements.
Its neck twisted briefly, and then it lunged forward, not fast, but fast enough to make the ground around it shudder slightly.
"We’ll support you from behind."
"Ugh...! You’d better do it well."
The boy knew there was nothing worth arguing about. So he clapped both hands together, and with a body nearly matching the Abyss Creature’s height, he charged forward and swung his fist.
Baam!
Their fists collided. Despite the creature’s gaunt, withered body, the weight behind its strike was completely the opposite of what it looked like, more than enough to make the boy feel like his arm might actually twist right out of its socket.
He winced, pulled his fist back, and threw another strike.
Baam! Baam! Baam!
Strangely, the Abyss Creature only stood there, taking it. Nothing seemed off, the boy kept pushing forward with everything he had, but the next second, the creature’s mouth chewed on something and then spat it out.
Pguh!
"....!"
Dark purple saliva sprayed out. The boy startled, dodging to the side, feeling a searing heat on his shoulder as though it were on fire. He found traces of that saliva there, tearing right through his clothes and leaving behind a burn that had melted straight into his skin.
"Ergh..!"
The pain was excruciating, but he had no time to dwell on it as he looked up and saw the Abyss Creature swinging a punch his way, muttering in that same unsettling rhythm.
But—
Woooshh!
The frozen trees hanging in the sky above them suddenly plummeted. Long, sprawling vines shot forward, weaving together into a massive mass and slamming down onto the Abyss Creature from above.
Kabaam!
—Grueh!
"Hey! Get clear!"
Hearing that, the boy scrambled up and put some distance between them, his face pale. The next second, artificial clouds formed above the Abyss Creature, not just one, but two of them.
Heavy rain poured down, soaking the creature’s body, and then—
Crack—!!
Yellow lightning struck it with a deafening, deadly boom, scorching the ground beneath the Abyss Creature into blackened ash.
Whatever the case, the Abyss Creature was left sprawled out, helpless. Its body kept twitching, jerking in strange, erratic movements, as though it refused to stop moving no matter what.
"D-did we get it?" one of the girls asked, her heart pounding. The three of them stood there in silence for a long moment, watching the creature, which then began pulling itself back up.
It let out an irritated growl, gearing up to attack again. But suddenly, their bodies felt weightless. Their feet lifted off the ground, pulling them up into the air along with everything else around them, their bodies flipping upside down.
"Kyaaah!!"
"Waaah!"
All three of them screamed at once, their bodies reacting fast on instinct, and a moment later, they crashed back down to the ground.
"W-what just happened...!?"
"I have no idea... could this be tied to the World Law here?"
"Ugh...! Then, what triggered—Hey! LOOK OUT!"
The boy shouted at the girl still sprawled on the ground, struggling to get up. It was obvious she hadn’t noticed the Abyss Creature closing in beside her, fist already raised.
"Ah."
By the time she registered it, her vision was filled with nothing but the Abyss Creature’s fist, coated in that same purplish, corrosive fluid.
The girl had no time to think, all she understood was that whatever came next would probably kill her. Or, at least, that’s what she thought.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
A sharp sound sliced through the air, wind whistling fiercely, and suddenly two long streaks of light, shaped like spears, shot past the girl’s eyes and pierced straight through the Abyss Creature’s body.
Spray—!
Dark blood burst out from the creature’s wounds, splattering across the girl’s face as she stayed frozen, trembling, her breath coming short, her eyes wide with disbelief.
Thud!
The Abyss Creature’s body collapsed lifelessly right in front of her. As for the girl, no, not just her, all three of them froze in shock together.
They were still trying to figure out what had just happened when they heard a voice.
"H-hey!? Are you all okay?"
That voice sounded familiar.
The three of them turned around and found a figure they recognized, long golden hair that made her look bright as the sun itself, even in the dead of night.
"M-miss Saintess...!"
Viena stood there, bow in hand. She hurried closer, worry etched across her face, staring at the Abyss Creature with a held breath.
’I killed it...! Yeah... I actually did it...’
She calmed herself, then smiled at the small group of students, ones she vaguely recalled speaking to at a party once before.
"Thank goodness you’re all okay."
She smiled, genuinely warm this time, her heart pounding with pure relief at having finally managed to save someone for the very first time.
"Huwaaa! Miss Saintess! I seriously almost died just now~"
The girl who’d nearly died suddenly burst into dramatic tears, catching Viena completely off guard. The girl rushed forward and threw her arms tightly around Viena.
Startled by the sudden physical contact, Viena smiled, a little awkward.
"Ugh... Thank you so much for saving us, Miss Saintess!"
The other girl closed in too, wrapping her arms around Viena just as tightly, her eyes glistening with tears.
Then, the boy...
"M-me too, so Miss Saintess—"
"No! You are not allowed to hug Miss Saintess, who do you think you are, trying to seize an opportunity like that?"
His face flushing red, the boy startled, then clicked his tongue.
"Damn it, I’m so jealous... I wish I’d been born a girl."
He muttered under his breath, inching closer while keeping his distance, well aware of the sharp looks from the two girls warning him not to get too close.
Feeling a little awkward, Viena coughed lightly, smiling shyly as she tried to ease herself free.
"Umh... So, the thing is, this isn’t actually over yet..."
Both girls immediately snapped to attention. They let go of Viena and nodded in agreement, turning their gaze toward the Abyss Rift.
"...What should we do about that Abyss Rift?"
Viena looked in the same direction. For now, no more Abyss Creatures were likely to come out, but that was only for now. Their situation as a whole was still hard to fully grasp.
The obvious move to consider was retreating, but retreat where, exactly?
The longer they stayed here waiting, the more dangerous that Abyss Rift would eventually become.
Viena fell quiet for a moment, then suddenly jolted as her feet lifted off the ground again, her body flipping upside down once more. And not just her, both girls and the boy were lifted right along with her.
"Kyaa!?"
"Egh! It’s happening again! Waaah~"
Startled, all four of them tried to reach for solid ground, but the moment they moved, their weight suddenly returned. The Saintess and the others were about to crash down hard, but right then, a two-dimensional shape appeared beneath them, forming something like a pillow, though it looked strangely abstract, its colors clashing and blending unevenly.
The pillow was massive, more than large enough to catch all of them.
Puff!
Viena fell, landing softly onto the pillow along with the two girls beside her. As for the boy, positioned a fair distance away, he ended up crashing face-first into the ground instead.
"Aghk!"
His pained whine rang out, but nobody paid it any attention, all of them fixated instead on the newcomer who’d just arrived.
"Oh! Hey! Miss Saintess, looks like you all just went through something pretty fun, haha."
It was a student with short white hair and black markings drawn across his face, apparently something he’d sketched on himself for no clear reason at all.
Odd as he looked, all three girls felt a genuine wave of relief the moment they realized one of the top first-year students had shown up. A student known for his enormous potential and a genuinely unique stigmata.
"Azel!?"
It was the male student who shouted, glaring at Azel with obvious irritation.
"Why didn’t you give me a pillow too!? That actually hurt!"
The Azel in question glanced at him, blinked a few times, then laughed, scratching the back of his head.
"Oh, sorry! But, ladies first!"
The boy let out a groan, but Azel ignored him entirely, turning his attention to the Abyss Rift, then to the Saintess.
"Miss Saintess, what would you like to do? Judging by the scale of it, I’d say that Abyss Rift is sitting at Awakened Tier."
He paused for a moment, pinching his chin, then added:
"So, here’s the thing, I’m not entirely sure what’s going on. But earlier I tried scouting the area, sketching out a bird creature to fly up and scan the skies, and honestly, the whole situation out there is a complete mess."
He hesitated, glancing at Viena, "There are a few other Abyss Rifts opening up right now, in the forest and in the city. There’s nowhere that’s truly safe, and ironically, this spot right here is actually one of the safer ones, since most of the others are sitting around Luminous rank. Of course, I don’t have the full picture, since there’s a limit to how far my scouting can reach. But one thing’s certain, even if somewhere safe does exist, we’d still have to cut through danger to reach it."
Hearing that, Viena tensed up. Of course, exactly what you’d expect from someone widely regarded as one of the most talented students around. He could gather a huge amount of information in almost no time and figure out exactly what needed to happen next.
Viena had only just taken her very first step forward, and that hadn’t suddenly turned her into some prodigy overnight, she was still just an ordinary student, same as everyone else here. So, in a situation like this...
"What... what would you suggest?"
Azel blinked a few times, the smile fading from his face, replaced by a serious expression.
"...If it’s alright with you, my suggestion would be that we take this one down ourselves. That way, this area gets cleared, and it becomes safe. After that... rather than running, we might actually be able to go help everyone else out there. Isn’t that exactly why you’ve been trying to change, Miss Saintess?"
