How bad can misfortune actually get for a person?
That was something impossible to measure.
In a massive corridor, inside a mansion built of gently polished wood, Alen ran for his life. He barreled through a door, smashing it apart without a second thought, his face drained of color.
Behind him, the sound of rapid footsteps thundered against the floor, leaving behind a wet, unsettling noise of bones grinding together.
’Damn it, damn it, damn it! What the hell is this!?’
Just moments ago, he’d been arguing with Valkas, and seconds later, the two of them had been teleported at the exact same time, landing right at the spot where an Abyss Rift had torn open. And the instant that Abyss Rift opened, both of them had been dragged straight in.
’This is really bad. I need to find Valkas.’
Alen clenched his jaw, his expression darkening at the thought of the Abyss Rift. He had no idea how high this one’s Tier scale was, and could only hope it fell within something he could actually survive.
If not...
’Tsk.’
A wet sound echoed behind him. Alen clicked his tongue, leaping sideways through a doorway.
Crash!
Baaam!
The sound of a wall being torn apart followed right behind him. The moment he reached a spot with four doors leading off in different directions, Alen didn’t waste time thinking. He grabbed the nearest one and ran on.
’Why the hell did we have to get split up!’
And of all things, why did he have to open his eyes right next to that sleeping Abyss Creature?
He kicked off harder, speeding through the empty corridor. His leg throbbed, and Alen winced as he felt the deep wound on it slowly starting to drag him down.
Sweat poured down his face. But he pushed through it and kept moving. The sound of clinking metal rang out, and his whole body went rigid. He gasped for breath, pressing himself against the wall and clamping his mouth shut.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
The clinking stopped, and for a moment everything fell silent, and then—
DING!
The sound of a bell tolled through the entire building, and everything lost its color all at once. The world plunged into darkness, and Alen lost his sight completely, unable to see a single thing.
His body was drenched in sweat, his breath caught in his throat, and...
Creak... Creak...
"...!"
The sound of footsteps drew closer, groaning against wooden floorboards that seemed like they could barely bear the weight. Alen had no idea what was approaching, but he knew one thing for certain — he couldn’t afford to be found here.
In this Abyss Rift, whenever the sound of clinking metal rang out, it meant: get ready. And whenever the bell tolled, it meant, ’it’s coming to look for you.’
Alen and the Abyss Creatures always froze in place whenever this happened. Because that was simply how the rules of this world worked.
Like the deep wound on his leg — he’d earned that by trying to use the darkness to make a break for it, not understanding the rules of this world, and getting hunted down for it immediately.
If that creature hadn’t stopped chasing him the instant time ran out, Alen might have died right then and there.
Sniff... Sniff...
"...!?"
Alen felt his heart hammering in his chest. A ragged breath exhaled just in front of him — he had no idea what it smelled like, because he refused to draw in a single breath himself.
His entire body went stiff, and then...
"Is that you, Alen?"
’Valkas!’
A sliver of hope flickered inside him. He almost opened his mouth to answer. But he stopped himself cold.
’No, no — with these rules, Valkas wouldn’t be stupid enough to just talk out loud. That thing is here, and... it’s probably the one imitating Valkas’s voice.’
That thought sent a crawling sense of dread through his entire body. If that creature could imitate people’s voices now, it meant Valkas’s own safety was very much in question.
Was he okay?
Had Valkas managed to survive?
Alen had no idea what this creature needed in order to copy someone’s voice. But he knew one thing for sure — this was absolutely infuriating.
"Alen! Why aren’t you answering me!? Answer! Say something! Damn it! Why are you just staying quiet!?"
Valkas’s voice echoed through the entire corridor, filling the terrifying silence in a way that made Alen want to throw up. His breathing grew shorter and shorter, but he refused to draw in even a single breath.
The creature, still playing the role of Valkas, moved here and there, repeating Valkas’s voice again and again to throw off his sense of direction.
Fortunately, just as Alen started to feel like he was suffocating, he heard the sound of clinking metal three times, followed by the toll of the bell echoing out once more.
DING!
Click! Click! Click!
Simple little clicking sounds spread through the air, and the lights came back on one by one, flooding the grand mansion’s corridor with light again.
Alen gasped for air, wiping away his cold sweat with a grim expression. His gaze swept his surroundings, where he could see nothing at all, as if nothing had ever been there in the first place.
At the same time, he felt a tremor slowly moving toward him. The Abyss Creature was still here.
"Damn it!"
Alen cursed and spun around, immediately choosing to run. He might have been able to fight that Abyss Creature — it was Awakened-tier, same as him.
But the problem was, in an Abyss Rift, plenty of lessons warned that they couldn’t afford to burn through their Soul Essence carelessly.
Because surviving this world wasn’t about killing monsters. It was about understanding the rules of this world first, and only then finding its hidden World Core and destroying it.
The Abyss Creatures inside were completely useless for finding the way out. They were just residents of this world who happened to have adapted perfectly to how its rules worked.
Alen burst through a door the way he always did. But this time, he found himself outside the house entirely. Right, under an unnaturally scorching sun, standing in a grassy yard, surrounded by dozens of doors leading to various rooms.
Alen looked up at the sky. It would’ve been nice to actually know where he was, rather than just knowing he was somewhere inside a house. But as he stared upward, he could clearly see that...
’The sun... the sky is fake?’
All of it was fake. Even though the air, the heat, and the wind were all clearly real. But the sky hung far too low, blocking Alen’s way out.
’What kind of place even is this?’
He wanted to curse, but that was when a violent crashing sound erupted behind him. Alen bit his lip and backed off a few steps to put some distance between himself and it.
He was about to pick a door at random, but right at that moment.
Crash!
BAAAM!!
Another Abyss Creature burst through. Alen flinched, turning toward the source, which was charging straight at him.
An Abyss Creature that crawled and clung low to the ground. It looked something like a crocodile, but not quite — it had far too many legs, each one clinging tight against its body.
It had three tails, each one stretching out with a hissing snake’s head at the tip.
—Greu...!
’Damn it.’
One of those tails shot forward. Alen manifested, ducking his head low. The wind whistled sharply past his skull, and he stepped back, letting starlight energy dance wildly across the surface of his sword.
After that, he raised it and swung in a wide, curving arc.
Slash—!
Spurt!
He wounded the serpent tail. But strangely, Alen’s sword wasn’t strong enough to cut the tail off completely, leaving him with a maddening sense of frustration.
At the same time, Alen glanced behind him. The Abyss Creature that had been relentlessly chasing him earlier revealed its hunched form — it looked like an old woman, her skin stretched taut, clinging to nothing but bone, her hair long and curled, hanging thick over her face.
Those strands of hair rubbed against each other, giving off a wet, uncomfortable sound. Then the hair thickened and shot forward at Alen with tremendous speed.
The tip of every single strand, even the smallest ones, suddenly formed into hissing snake heads.
Now the hissing echoed through the entire space. Alen raised his sword, but he didn’t fight back, since taking on two Abyss Creatures at once was too much to handle.
In the end, all he could do was leap here and there, dodging. Those strands of hair were no joke — their impact was strong enough to shatter and punch holes clean through concrete and polished wood.
Clang!
BAAAM!
And on top of everything, the crocodile with the snake tails made things even worse.
Whistle! Whistle! Whistle!
Baam! Baam! Baam!
Alen drew his sword, starlight energy trailing behind him in the empty air. Then—
Tearing—!!
Explosion!
The starlight energy detonated the instant several strands of hair shot toward him. Alen found no opening to escape, but right at that moment...
Clang! Clang! Clang!
The world’s rules kicked back in with sudden speed, freezing Alen and both Abyss Creatures in place.
DING!!
Everything went dark. Not one of them moved.
