How To Survive A Cute Ghost Yandere

Chapter 117: Why a game of hide-and-seek

A powerful gust of wind tore through the empty corridor. A blurred silhouette slammed into the wall ahead, shot forward by something chasing it from behind.

Badump! Badump! Badump!

Footsteps that shattered the corridor followed close behind, revealing an Abyss Creature that resembled a human, except its body was so grotesquely bloated it filled the entire hallway, its hands covered in far too many fingers, its skin a sickly greenish tone, and worst of all, its mouth kept spewing out drool and the contents of its own stomach, leaving behind a stench foul enough to make anyone want to throw up.

And there, in the middle of it all, was Valkas.

"Get away! Get away from me! Damn it! What is wrong with this thing!? Why does it have to look this disgusting!?"

His expression had gone completely dark, his cheeks puffing out every so often as he fought back the urge to gag.

"Why does something like this even exist!?"

He poured everything he had into flying away. But because of the wound on his body, his waist torn open and mangled, his control over his Soul Essence had gone somewhat haywire.

Given that, he had to be careful.

"And where the hell is Alen!? We came in together, didn’t we, damn it."

He cursed, ducking into a room where he found a large bedroom. Valkas froze for a moment — there was no other door in the room — while behind him.

Slam—!!

BAAAM!!

The Abyss Creature struck the doorway with everything it had, choking off Valkas’s breath as he stumbled backward, retreating.

His face went pale, cold sweat beading down it.

Beyond the shattered doorway, wall crumbling along with it, the Abyss Creature emerged in all its revolting glory.

—Heheheh

Its mouth was toothless, oozing green fluid that writhed as it dripped out, with worms clearly visible, wriggling and jumping around inside.

"Eugh...!" If there was one thing Valkas absolutely couldn’t stand, it was something unbearably hideous and disgusting — that was his true weakness.

As one of the dragon race, where everything was supposed to be beautiful and captivating, he simply couldn’t wrap his head around how a creature as hideous and repulsive as the Abyss Creature in front of him could even exist.

"S-stop laughing! And go brush your teeth!"

Valkas covered his nose with one hand, while his other hand manifested, slamming down a crushing weight of pressure onto the Abyss Creature.

The sheer force startled the creature, its legs buckling as it crashed to its knees on the wooden floor, shattering the surface beneath it.

Valkas didn’t waste a single second. The Abyss Creature was only Awakened-tier, and its mastery was far below his own — it had probably only just awakened and climbed into the Awakened tier recently. So sure, he could win, but it would burn through a lot of his energy for nothing.

He should have held back. He really, truly should have held back, but...

’I am so sick of all of this!’

A dark smirk spread across his face as his pupils narrowed into vertical slits. His teeth, previously ordinary, slowly gave way at both corners of his mouth to elongated fangs pushing out.

Valkas shot forward, flying through the air, landing right at the creature’s right shoulder, raising his spear directly above it in a downward stabbing stance.

The pressure on his spear was nearly nonexistent. It was so light that Valkas’s speed reached a level almost impossible for the eye to follow — what happened next was that the Abyss Creature never even had a chance to feel anything, only Valkas’s spear closing in.

Stab—!

Just before the spear made contact, Valkas shifted its pressure entirely. What had been nearly weightless a second ago suddenly became crushingly heavy, so heavy it might as well have matched the weight of a massive object.

COLLISION!

EXPLOSION!

Spurt!

The Abyss Creature’s chest caved in around its heart. Dark blood sprayed out, splattering and nearly reaching Valkas’s face.

Valkas dodged the blood, thoroughly disgusted by anything coming from the creature in front of him.

He wiped away his cold sweat, still wearing that smirk.

"See? Damn lowly species, who do you think you are, showing yourself in front of me like that?"

Valkas let out a low laugh, glancing at the mirror in the room, catching his own reflection — red hair, vertical pupils, and dragon scales slowly forming across parts of his body.

"Ah, that was close."

Valkas caught himself, calming down and reining in his draconic instincts. With that, he shifted back into his human disguise and let out a breath.

He left the Abyss Creature behind, unwilling to stay in the same room for even a moment longer. After that, Valkas made his way down the corridor, moving carefully this time, doing his best not to disturb any other Abyss Creatures.

He had no desire to get chased again just because he’d screamed his head off at the sight of yet another hideous Abyss Creature in this place.

"Damn it, where did Alen go? Is he lost or something, come find me already! I’m lost too, you know."

He groaned lowly, thoroughly annoyed. The vast corridor stretched out empty around him. There were only a few trash cans, storage lockers, and some framed portraits hanging on the walls.

Valkas paused for a moment at one of the portraits. He saw a picture of unfamiliar alien creatures, posed together for a photo — some large, some small.

It was easy enough to guess this was probably some kind of family photo. Strangely enough, the interior of this mansion actually felt completely normal, just like something out of the human world.

It was only what lived inside it that was so bizarre. There were so many Abyss Creatures, each one unique and utterly unpredictable.

Valkas kept walking, then stopped at a wall scrawled with markings in blood-red. It left him momentarily confused, and he stopped, staring at the scrawled writing.

"...What language is this? Alien?"

That seemed to be it. After all, there was no way Valkas, a member of the dragon race, wouldn’t recognize the language of some species from a world entirely different from his own.

So the moment he saw that strange writing, Valkas knew right away it must have come from a world far, far away. But if that were true, why would a world so far away exist inside an Abyss Rift?

That was a ridiculous question to even ask.

"So an Abyss Rift really can connect one world to another. But then why are there rules? Why is the world so limited?"

The answer, it turned out, was surprisingly simple.

"It’s because this world is a fragment broken off from a world that was destroyed long ago."

The rules themselves came from some particular being obsessed with how the world inside this Abyss Rift functioned. That thought led Valkas to a certain conclusion.

If he wanted to escape this place, he needed to destroy the World Core. And to find the World Core, he needed to understand what each rule actually meant — why a mansion, why a game of hide-and-seek, and... why its residents all looked like humanoid Aliens?

He hesitated for a moment, but right then, he heard the sound of clinking metal, three times in a row.

"Oh, damn it... Here it comes again... Ugh..."

Ding!

The bell tolled, loud and clear.
