How To Survive A Cute Ghost Yandere

Chapter 118: This place is truly rotten

The night sky felt far cooler than usual. Stars flickered high above, while the moon stood as the only steady source of light over a city drowning in screams and terror.

Deep within the Empire itself, in a dark, empty corridor lit only by a small torch, its dim flame dancing wildly.

A figure walked through it. Barefoot, dressed in a white gown, with hair and eyes both the same shade of white.

Renessa hummed lightly to herself. Feeling the negative energy so thick around her, it made her want to lose her mind being in a place like this, but she was doing everything she could to hold herself together.

"I hope my darling is okay."

She was worried about Eiros. If she could, she’d genuinely go find him right now, but he’d already vanished off to who knows where.

Renessa wanted to search for him, but the problem was, she had something equally urgent that needed doing.

"Sorry, sweetheart, I’ll come find you the moment this is over."

Renessa always made Eiros her top priority. She used him as her reason for living, but she would never forget the one thing that had made her as broken as she was now.

She still carried the desire for revenge, the desire to destroy ’them,’ the ones who had destroyed her family. And for that, Renessa would justify absolutely any means necessary.

That was exactly what she was doing today. With so much negative energy gathering across the Empire, Renessa could tell right away that something was happening here.

It didn’t take intelligence to figure that out. It was simply something obvious to the spirit race. Because normally, even a battlefield that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives would only generate negative energy on the scale of a large city.

But the Empire? What was it, exactly?

It was where humanity’s highest officials, the human government itself, resided. This should have been a place where death might occur occasionally, not something that happened so often it became routine.

That was exactly why Renessa found this place so repulsive. Because while negative energy was something she genuinely needed, too much of it just became sickening.

Like a drink that calls for a bit of sugar — it would taste absolutely awful if someone dumped in an entire bucket of it, wouldn’t it?

And that was the state of the Empire. Rather than negative energy that merely formed the shape of a city or a castle, this energy was so overwhelming it soared straight up into the sky, punching through the clouds and reaching somewhere entirely unknown.

What was the Empire planning with all of that?

Why would something like negative energy be deliberately released out into outer space?

What were they trying to achieve?

Out there in space, where... ’they’ were waiting?

Renessa’s smile grew wider and more manic as the thought crossed her mind. Her whole body trembled violently, her heart pounding far too fast.

"Ah... I really hope... I really hope this isn’t something bad."

Renessa was already exhausted from a life spent doing nothing but calming and killing the hosts of the Seed of Corruption. If things kept going like this, she had no idea when she’d ever actually reach her revenge.

That was exactly why, even if it meant taking a risk, Renessa decided to go far beyond what she normally would.

Estiel would probably get a headache if he found out about this, but Renessa didn’t care.

"Hehe."

With a giddy little giggle, Renessa glanced around, and then her body vanished from that spot entirely. She found herself somewhere only she could reach, surrounded by countless doors she could open and step through.

Renessa descended far below, then opened the white door and found herself pulled back into reality.

In an instant, she found herself still inside the Empire’s castle, yet standing in an unfamiliar corridor. This was clearly still the Empire’s castle, but the architectural style, the walls, everything about it wasn’t anything the Empire’s castle actually used.

Here, Renessa could feel all of that negative energy gathering. Something so nauseating it began to press against her own mind.

"Die! Die! Die!"

"Kill yourself! Why are you still alive!? Your brother is so disappointed in you!"

"Renessa! Don’t be such an ungrateful child, kill yourself right now!"

Those thoughts gnawed at her relentlessly. Voices she hadn’t heard in a long time, voices that made Renessa ache with longing for her own family.

She lifted her head, her pupils spinning with a brief flicker of madness, before she finally smiled through ragged breath and cold sweat.

"This place is truly rotten."

Ignoring all those negative thoughts, Renessa took a step forward, moving deeper into the corridor. The further in she went, the clearer it became just what kind of atrocities the Empire had committed to generate this much negative energy.

Along Renessa’s path, there were no more solid walls, only glass panels revealing rooms full of research equipment, rooms filled with countless bodies and dissected organs.

Certain bodies floated frozen inside glass tubes filled with water. And more importantly...

Renessa stopped, staring at one of the glass tubes with a blank expression. But she was clearly, genuinely shocked by what she was looking at.

It was a body, specially preserved. A humanoid body with cat ears, three whiskers on each cheek, and a tail curling from behind, wrapping around toward the front of its stomach.

"...A race that was supposed to be extinct, huh?"

And Renessa realized this was only the beginning. Because beyond the Beastkin race, there were countless other hidden races locked away in the Empire’s laboratory. Even the most horrific of creatures were kept here.

There were entire zones dedicated to breeding.

Renessa didn’t know what to say. If this laboratory had been running this long, carrying out this work for hundreds of years, then all this gathered negative energy made perfect sense.

Forced breeding, organ mutilation, DNA grafting, and every kind of experiment imaginable, all carried out under conditions so cruel it was nauseating.

That made Renessa wonder.

Could there be a spirit race kept here too?

She wanted to search further, but right then, she heard a voice coming from the room across the way, enough to send a jolt of shock through her entire body.

"No, hmm... I don’t think this is enough. What do you think, should we increase the capacity again?"

"...That’s up to Your Majesty. But I’d recommend against it. If this continues, Crown Prince Rein and Princess Reina won’t be able to withstand it any longer. They might die."

From that exchange, Renessa realized this was an elderly scientist speaking with the Emperor himself, and somehow it involved Rein and Reina, the Empire’s own children?

Renessa hesitated, then lowered herself and moved closer, peering through a narrow gap in the doorway.

Her eyes went wide.
