Chapter 109: Flowing Step

The boss's hand moved away from his side.

Blood covered his fingers.

He looked at it for a moment.

Then his eyes returned to Kael.

Kael stood with his sword lowered slightly, watching him.

The boss's expression hardened.

He shifted his footing.

His stance became lighter.

His weight moved from one foot to the other with almost no effort.

"Flowing Step."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The boss moved.

Kael immediately swung.

The boss slipped past the blade.

Kael turned and attacked again.

The boss stepped around it.

Another slash.

Another step.

He wasn't backing away.

He was moving around Kael.

Every step flowed into the next.

Kael changed direction and pressed forward.

Their blades collided.

CLANG!

The boss shifted away.

Kael followed.

CLANG!

Another clash.

The boss moved again.

Kael's eyes followed his feet.

He's keeping up.

Kael suddenly disappeared.

Mirage Step.

A false image appeared to one side.

The boss didn't fall for it.

He moved toward the real Kael.

Kael reappeared behind him.

His hand was already on the hilt.

"Mirage Draw!"

SHING!

The boss's body flowed away.

The blade missed.

Kael immediately followed with a slash.

The boss blocked.

CLANG!

Kael attacked again.

The boss slipped around the blade.

Kael continued pressing.

The boss continued moving.

But something was different.

His breathing was getting heavier.

His movements were still smooth, but every change of direction was beginning to cost him.

Kael noticed.

The wound from Mirage Draw hadn't stopped bleeding.

And Flowing Step was demanding more from him than he could afford.

The boss suddenly planted his foot.

His sword came down.

"Blade Break!"

CLANG!

Kael's sword shook.

But it stayed in his hand.

The boss's eyes widened.

He had expected the same result as before.

It didn't happen.

First Blood had weakened him.

Kael immediately saw the opening.

His sword came forward.

The boss barely moved.

SHING!

The blade passed close enough to tear through his sleeve.

The boss twisted away and stumbled back.

Kael didn't let him breathe.

He stepped forward.

The boss raised his sword.

Kael attacked again.

CLANG!

The boss barely blocked.

The force pushed him backward.

He glanced toward the others.

The spear man was tending to their injuries nearby.

The boss's eyes hardened.

"Enough."

The spear man looked over.

"Boss?"

"Take them and leave."

The spear man's expression changed.

"But—"

"Go."

The boss didn't look away from Kael.

"I'll catch up."

The spear man hesitated.

Then finally turned toward the others.

"Move!"

They began retreating.

Kael watched them go.

The boss remained between him and the retreating group.

Blood continued dripping from his side.

His breathing was heavier now.

But his sword was still raised.

Kael tightened his grip.

The boss looked at him.

"Now..."

His stance lowered.

"...we finish this."
