The spear man slowed down.
The injured hunters behind him were struggling to keep pace.
One of them stumbled again, nearly falling to the ground.
The spear man turned.
"Keep moving."
The injured hunter gritted his teeth.
"We need to stop."
The spear man looked at the wounds they had suffered.
They were in no condition to keep fighting.
But he also knew they couldn't remain in the open.
The boss had ordered them to retreat.
They had followed that order without question.
Still...
Something felt wrong.
The spear man looked back toward the forest.
The battle had been loud only moments ago.
Blades.
Explosions.
The sound of trees breaking.
Now there was nothing.
Not even a distant clash of weapons.
He frowned.
The boss wasn't the type to end a fight quietly.
"Stay here."
The injured hunters looked at him.
One of them frowned.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going back."
"Back?"
"To check on the boss."
The hunter shook his head.
"He told us to leave."
"I heard him."
The spear man tightened his grip around his weapon.
"That's exactly why I'm going."
He looked toward the forest.
"If he's still fighting, I'll know."
"And then?"
"I'll come back."
The injured hunter stared at him.
"You said that before."
The spear man didn't respond.
He turned and started walking.
After a few steps, he stopped.
He looked over his shoulder.
"Don't follow me."
Then he disappeared into the trees.
His pace gradually increased.
The forest seemed different on the way back.
Every broken branch caught his attention.
Every patch of disturbed soil made him slow down.
He eventually reached the place where they had separated.
The spear man stopped.
A deep cut had torn through one of the trees.
He recognized it immediately.
The boss's sword.
He continued.
Another tree had been split.
Then another.
The signs of battle became more obvious.
But there was still no sound.
His grip tightened around his spear.
He pushed through another group of branches.
The clearing was just ahead.
He could see it.
The spear man took a breath.
Then stepped forward.
At that exact moment—
SHING!
Kael's sword flashed through the boss's neck.
The boss's head separated from his body.
It flew through the air.
His body collapsed beneath it.
The spear man froze.
His eyes widened.
He had arrived at the exact moment his boss died.
Kael slowly turned toward him.
The bloody aura of Blade Lust still surrounded his body.
His sword dripped with blood.
The spear man's face went pale.
He had seen that aura before.
He knew what the boss had activated.
But now the boss was dead.
And Kael was still standing.
Kael's eyes locked onto his.
The spear man's fingers tightened around his spear.
Kael took one step forward.
The spear man's instincts took over.
He turned and ran.
Branches snapped behind him.
He didn't look back.
Not once.
Kael watched him disappear into the forest.
The bloody aura around his body slowly faded.
He lowered his sword.
The clearing became silent once again.
