Hunt Race

Chapter 120: The Counter

Kael remained on one knee, one hand pressed against his ribs as the pain from the previous attack continued to pulse through his side.

He took a slow breath and pushed himself upright.

The beast stood several meters away in its new humanoid form, its silver eyes fixed on him.

Kael tightened his grip on his sword.

Neither waited.

The beast rushed forward, its fist driving toward Kael's face as Kael slipped to the side and brought his sword across toward its ribs.

The beast twisted its body, letting the blade pass across its fur before snapping its claws toward Kael's chest.

Kael caught the attack on his sword and pushed the claw away, but the beast immediately stepped in with its other hand.

Kael ducked beneath the punch and turned with the movement, bringing his sword upward toward the beast's side.

The beast pulled its body back and swept a claw toward Kael's face.

Kael leaned away from the strike before stepping back into range and cutting toward the beast's shoulder.

The beast caught the blade between its claws and shoved it aside, forcing Kael to retreat a step.

Kael immediately returned, their attacks colliding at close range as his sword met one claw after another.

CLANG!

The beast drove forward.

Kael turned aside from a punch and answered with a horizontal slash, forcing the beast to twist away.

Its knee came toward Kael's stomach.

Kael lowered his sword and caught the strike against the blade, then pushed the leg away and stepped forward before the beast could recover.

The beast swung its fist.

Kael slipped underneath it.

He came up with a slash.

The beast bent backward.

The blade passed over its chest.

Kael followed immediately.

The beast stepped inside the swing and knocked the sword away with its forearm.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

They separated for barely a second before rushing at each other again.

The beast threw another punch.

Kael twisted away from it, turning his body just enough that his injured ribs faced the beast.

The beast noticed.

It took the opening immediately.

Its fist shot toward Kael's exposed side.

Kael waited until the last possible moment.

Mirage Step.

His body shifted sharply away from the incoming fist, carrying him around the attack and straight toward the beast's side.

The beast's eyes widened.

Kael's sword was already moving.

He swung directly for its neck.

The beast reacted on instinct.

Its jaws opened and snapped down on the blade.

CLANG!

The sword stopped between its teeth.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The beast had trapped his weapon.

Kael released his grip without hesitation and stepped forward before the beast could react.

His knee drove upward with all his strength.

BOOM!

It crashed into the beast's lower jaw.

The beast's head snapped backward and its body staggered, stunned for a brief moment as its jaws opened and released the sword.

The weapon dropped.

Kael caught it before it touched the ground and immediately spun into a wide horizontal swing.

The beast recovered just in time.

It threw itself backward.

Kael's blade tore through the space where it had been standing.

The beast landed several meters away and remained still for a moment.

Slowly, it raised one hand.

Its fingers touched its lower jaw.

It rubbed the spot where Kael's knee had connected.

Then it looked at Kael.

Kael stood with his sword resting at his side.

A faint smile crossed his face.

The beast lowered its hand.

Its silver eyes sharpened
