Kael stood several meters away from the beast.
His breathing had steadied, but the soreness in his ribs remained.
The beast slowly rolled its jaw before fixing its silver eyes on him again.
Neither moved.
Kael tightened his grip on his sword.
He had tried Phantom Edge.
It had failed.
But he wasn't done.
The beast lowered its stance.
Kael lowered his as well.
They rushed toward each other.
The beast's fist came first, forcing Kael to turn aside as his sword swept toward its waist, but the beast twisted away and brought a claw across his chest.
Kael caught the claw with his blade.
CLANG!
He pushed it away and immediately stepped forward, cutting toward the beast's shoulder.
The beast ducked beneath the sword and drove its fist toward Kael's stomach.
Kael shifted aside and answered with a slash toward its ribs.
The beast blocked with its forearm.
CLANG!
Kael stepped back.
The beast followed.
Another punch came toward his face.
Kael leaned away from it and swung for the beast's neck.
The beast bent backward.
The blade passed above its head.
It immediately stepped forward again.
Kael met it.
Their attacks collided at close range, claws scraping against steel as Kael moved around each strike and the beast continued forcing him backward.
Then the beast suddenly stopped.
Kael noticed.
The silver aura around its body began gathering toward its hands.
The beast slowly opened its fingers.
Silver light condensed around each claw.
Thin curved blades formed around its hands, extending several inches beyond the natural claws.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
The beast raised one hand.
The curved silver blade followed the movement.
The beast swung.
"Crescent Claw."
A curved silver edge swept toward Kael.
Kael stepped aside.
The attack missed.
Kael immediately used Mirage Step, shifting around the beast's flank.
He appeared at its side with his sword already rising.
The beast turned.
Its second claw swept toward him.
Kael ducked beneath it.
He moved to counter.
Then the beast twisted its wrist.
The curved silver blade bent with the movement.
It changed direction in the middle of the swing.
Kael's eyes widened.
The attack curved back toward him.
He tried to move.
Too late.
SHING!
The silver edge cut across his side.
Kael stumbled backward.
Blood ran down his clothes.
His hand immediately went to the wound.
The Mark on his palm pulsed.
Warmth spread through his body.
The cut began closing.
Then stopped.
Kael stared at the wound.
The silver aura remained inside it.
His Mark pulsed again.
Nothing happened.
Kael's expression hardened.
The beast stood across from him, the curved silver blades still wrapped around its claws.
Kael slowly raised his sword.
His wound was still bleeding.
For the first time...
his Mark couldn't heal him.
The beast stepped forward.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
The fight had just changed.
