Blood continued to run down Kael's side.
The Mark on his palm pulsed beneath his skin, but the wound refused to close.
Kael kept his eyes on the beast.
The silver aura gathered around its claws again.
Curved blades formed around its hands.
The beast moved first.
Its right claw swept across Kael's chest, the silver crescent following the motion as Kael leaned away from it, but the moment he tried to move around the attack, the beast twisted its wrist and the crescent curved back toward him.
Kael ducked beneath it.
The second claw came from the opposite side.
He stepped backward.
The silver blade followed.
Kael turned his body and barely escaped the edge before the beast pressed forward again.
Another slash.
Another curve.
Kael kept moving.
He couldn't simply outrun the technique.
Every time he thought he had escaped the blade, the beast's wrist changed direction and brought the crescent back toward him.
Kael swung at the beast's arm.
The beast pulled away.
The silver crescent immediately swept back toward Kael.
He blocked.
CLANG!
The impact drove him sideways.
His feet scraped across the dirt.
The beast was already coming again.
Kael raised his sword.
The first crescent came from his right.
He stepped left.
The beast twisted its wrist.
The crescent followed.
Kael moved forward.
The silver edge passed behind him.
For a brief moment, Kael was close enough to see the beast's fingers tightening around the aura-coated claw.
His eyes sharpened.
The wrist.
The beast swung again.
Kael moved around the first crescent, but the second came across before he could create distance.
He had nowhere to go.
Kael gritted his teeth and stepped toward the attack instead.
The silver blade curved toward him.
He twisted his body and slipped inside its path.
The edge passed behind his back.
Kael immediately struck the beast's wrist.
CLANG!
The curved blade broke apart.
But the beast was already attacking with its other hand.
Kael knocked the claw away.
The remaining silver crescent flickered.
Kael didn't give it time to form again.
He stepped forward.
Ripple Slash!
The first strike crashed toward the beast.
CLANG!
The beast blocked with its claw.
Kael's second strike was already coming.
The beast's eyes followed the blade.
Kael suddenly abandoned the strike.
His body shifted.
Mirage Step.
The beast reacted to the movement.
Kael slipped around its side.
His sword disappeared into its sheath.
The beast turned.
Kael's hand snapped onto the hilt.
"Mirage Draw."
SHING!
The blade erupted from the sheath.
The beast raised its claw.
Kael's sword slipped past it.
His eyes sharpened.
"Phantom Edge."
The blade cut forward.
The beast twisted away.
But it was too late.
SHING!
The sword cut across its side.
Blood spilled onto the ground.
The beast staggered.
Kael landed several steps away.
The clearing went silent.
The beast looked down at the blood running from its side.
Then slowly raised its eyes toward Kael.
The Mark on Kael's palm pulsed.
Kael stared at it.
A faint smile appeared.
The beast's expression hardened.
The fight had changed.
