The beast didn't give Kael time to recover.
Its remaining claw snapped forward, and at the same instant, the blood scattered across the clearing rose from the ground, twisting together around its arm. The crimson mass hardened into several long, jagged fangs that extended from the creature's claw before tearing toward Kael from different angles.
Kael's mana sensing caught the movement.
He sensed the beast's claw coming from the right.
He raised his sword.
CLANG!
The physical strike collided with his blade, but the blood fang came immediately afterward from below. Kael twisted his wrist and knocked it away, only for another fang to tear toward his ribs.
He stepped backward.
SHING!
The blood fang grazed his side, opening another cut before dissolving back into the blood around the beast.
Kael gritted his teeth.
The creature charged behind it.
Kael sensed the next attack and moved before the claw reached him, but the beast changed direction halfway through the movement, forcing Kael to adjust his defense in the middle of the exchange. Their weapons collided again, and the impact drove Kael several steps backward.
The beast didn't stop.
Another Blood Fang formed.
Then another.
Kael used Mirage Step.
His body blurred as the crimson fangs tore through the space where he had been standing. He appeared beside the beast and immediately swung his sword, but the creature turned with him and caught the blade against its claw.
CLANG!
Kael's arms shook from the impact.
The beast pushed forward.
Kael released the contact and slipped away, but the beast immediately sent another Blood Fang after him. Kael raised his sword and used Ripple Slash, the first strike cutting through one fang while the second knocked another aside.
The remaining blood splashed across the stone.
Kael barely had time to breathe.
The beast was already there.
Its claw came down.
Kael blocked.
CLANG!
The force drove him to one knee.
The beast pushed harder.
Kael's injured body trembled beneath the pressure, and for a moment he couldn't create enough strength to force the claw away. The beast's Silver aura burned around its body as it leaned into the attack, its expression cold and focused.
Kael twisted his blade.
The claw slid off.
He rolled away just before another Blood Fang stabbed into the ground where his body had been.
BOOM!
Stone shattered.
Kael came back onto his feet and immediately used Mirage Step, appearing behind the beast. He swung toward its back.
The beast sensed him.
It spun.
Kael's blade cut across its side.
SHING!
Blood sprayed.
The creature staggered, but it didn't retreat.
Instead, its remaining hand snapped toward the blood that had just left its body.
The droplets changed direction.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
They shot toward him.
He raised his sword.
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
Three crimson projectiles struck the blade in rapid succession, each impact forcing his arm farther backward. A fourth slipped past his defense and cut across his forearm.
Kael stepped away.
Blood ran down his arm.
His wound began healing.
The beast attacked again.
Kael sensed the movement through its mana and shifted before the claw arrived, but the creature wasn't aiming for where Kael was.
It was aiming for where he would have to move.
Kael realized it a fraction too late.
A Blood Fang erupted from the ground beside him.
He twisted his body.
The fang tore across his side instead of piercing him.
Kael stumbled.
The beast was already closing the distance.
Its remaining claw swept toward his chest.
Kael brought his sword up.
CLANG!
The impact forced him backward.
Another Blood Fang formed behind the beast and curved toward Kael from the opposite direction.
Kael sensed it.
He couldn't block both.
Mirage Step.
He vanished between the two attacks, appearing several meters away as the claw and Blood Fang collided behind him.
The beast turned.
Kael was breathing heavily.
Blood covered his clothes, and although his wounds were healing, the process couldn't keep up with the amount of damage he was receiving.
Across from him, the beast was in no better condition.
Blood continued flowing from the wounds Kael had inflicted.
Its regeneration had slowed.
But it was still fighting like an Elite Silver.
The creature raised its remaining arm.
The blood scattered across the clearing began gathering around it again.
Kael tightened his grip.
The beast wasn't attacking recklessly.
It was controlling the battlefield.
Every Blood Fang forced him toward a particular direction.
Every physical strike punished him when he tried to escape.
And every Blood Bullet threatened the openings created by his defense.
Kael watched the blood move.
Then he noticed something.
The beast wasn't simply trying to hit him.
It was herding him.
Another Blood Fang formed.
Kael sensed the beast's claw at the same time.
He shifted left.
The fang came from the left.
Kael twisted back.
The claw came from the right.
He blocked.
CLANG!
The force pushed him exactly where the beast wanted.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
He stopped moving for half a second.
The beast charged.
Kael sensed the attack.
He raised his sword.
The claw struck.
CLANG!
Kael was driven backward again.
His boots scraped across the stone until he finally stopped at the edge of the clearing.
The beast stood several meters away.
Its Silver aura flickered violently around its battered body.
Blood continued dripping from its wounds.
Yet its remaining claw was steady.
Kael looked at the blood scattered between them.
Then he looked at the beast.
The Mark pulsed beneath his palm.
Kael slowly lowered his sword.
He finally understood what the beast was doing.
It had been controlling the battlefield from the beginning.
And if Kael wanted another chance to use the Mark against it, he would first have to make the beast believe it had him exactly where it wanted him.
