Kael followed the equipment district until the noise of metal striking metal became louder than the conversations around him.
He stopped in front of a large workshop.
A heavy sign hung above the entrance, bearing the image of a crossed hammer and sword.
Kael stepped inside.
Heat immediately washed over him.
Several blacksmiths worked around the large forge at the back of the shop, while finished weapons covered the walls. Swords, spears, axes, daggers, and other weapons were arranged according to quality.
Kael's eyes moved across them.
A few were impressive.
Most weren't what he was looking for.
“Looking for something?”
Kael turned.
A broad man stood behind the counter. His arms were covered in old burn marks, and a thick leather apron covered most of his body.
Kael placed his sword on the counter.
“I need this repaired.”
The blacksmith picked it up.
He examined the blade from several angles before running a finger carefully along the edge.
“This has seen some work.”
Kael nodded.
“Recently.”
The blacksmith noticed the shallow marks along the blade.
“Beast?”
“Yes.”
“What rank?”
Kael hesitated for half a second.
“Silver.”
The blacksmith looked up.
“Silver?”
“Elite Silver.”
The man's expression changed slightly.
He looked at the sword again.
“And you're still holding it.”
Kael shrugged.
“It held up.”
“Barely.”
The blacksmith turned the sword toward the light.
“The edge is damaged, but the core of the blade is fine. Whoever made this knew what they were doing.”
Kael nodded.
“How much?”
The blacksmith gave him a price.
Kael considered it.
“Do it.”
The blacksmith placed the sword aside.
“It'll take a day.”
“Fine.”
Kael looked around the shop again.
“What about armor?”
The blacksmith pointed toward another section.
“Depends on what you want.”
“Something light.”
The blacksmith raised an eyebrow.
“Light armor?”
“I need to move freely.”
“Then don't buy heavy armor.”
Kael glanced at him.
“I figured.”
The blacksmith gave a short laugh.
He walked toward a rack and pulled down a dark leather vest reinforced with thin metal plates.
“Try this.”
Kael put it on.
He moved his shoulders.
Then twisted his body from side to side.
The armor didn't restrict him.
He raised his arm.
Still comfortable.
“How much?”
The blacksmith told him.
Kael nodded.
“I'll take it.”
The blacksmith looked at him.
“You're not even going to ask about the others?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“It fits.”
The blacksmith stared at him for a moment before shaking his head.
“Simple man.”
Kael smiled faintly.
He paid for the armor.
The blacksmith wrapped it up.
Kael picked up the package and looked toward the weapon racks one last time.
“Do you sell swords?”
The blacksmith glanced at the damaged weapon resting on the counter.
“I do.”
“Anything better than mine?”
The blacksmith folded his arms.
“Probably.”
Kael waited.
“But better doesn't always mean better for you.”
Kael's expression changed slightly.
The blacksmith continued.
“Your sword is balanced for speed. The weight is concentrated properly, and the grip is narrow enough for quick changes in direction.”
He tapped the damaged blade.
“If you replace it with something heavier just because it's stronger, you might actually fight worse.”
Kael looked at the sword.
That made sense.
“Then repair it.”
Then he turned toward the exit.
“Come back tomorrow.”
Kael stopped.
“Tomorrow?”
“Your sword will be ready.”
Kael nodded.
“I'll be here.”
He stepped outside.
The afternoon air felt cooler after the heat of the forge.
Kael looked down at the package in his hand.
He started walking back toward the guild.
His sword would be ready tomorrow.
Kael glanced at his palm.
The black crescent remained quiet.
He lowered his hand.
Tomorrow, he'd get his sword back.
After that, it was time to return to the training hall.
