Kael had barely stepped out of Darius's courtyard when a familiar voice came from behind him.
“Kael.”
He stopped.
Cherry approached, her twin blades secured at her sides. She had the same composed expression she always carried, as though she had already decided how the conversation was going to end.
Kael looked at her.
“Cherry.”
“I've been looking for you.”
“That sounds unfortunate.”
Cherry ignored the comment.
“I'm going on a mission.”
Kael waited.
“I want you to be my bodyguard.”
Kael stared at her.
“You're stronger than me.”
“That's the point.”
Cherry stopped in front of him.
“It's an escort mission. I need someone to accompany me.”
“And you chose me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I trust you.”
Kael's expression remained unchanged.
“That doesn't explain why I have to be your bodyguard.”
Cherry tilted her head slightly.
“I said you're coming.”
Kael stared at her.
“So you'll come.”
Kael's expression became completely uninterested.
“No.”
Cherry raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“No.”
She studied him for a moment.
“The mission won't be dangerous.”
Kael gave her a flat look.
“The last time we encountered something that wasn't supposed to be dangerous, I almost died.”
Cherry said nothing.
Kael continued.
“Pause.”
He looked at her.
“Twice.” 😒
Cherry's lips curved slightly.
“You survived.”
“That isn't the point.”
“It is to me.”
Kael folded his arms.
“I'm not interested in being your plaything.”
Cherry looked at him calmly.
“That's not what I said.”
“You said you needed someone to play with.”
“Yes.”
“Exactly.”
Cherry sighed quietly.
“You're making this difficult.”
“You're the one forcing me into an escort mission.”
“I haven't forced you yet.”
Kael raised an eyebrow.
“Yet?”
Cherry didn't answer.
She simply looked at him for a moment before speaking again.
“The assignment is simple. I'll be escorting someone outside the guild's territory. There shouldn't be any serious problems along the route.”
Kael remained silent.
“Then why do you need a bodyguard?”
“Because an escort mission isn't only about strength.”
Cherry's tone remained calm.
“The person I'm escorting needs someone who can deal with anything that appears along the way without drawing unnecessary attention.”
Kael looked at her.
“And you think that's me?”
“I know it is.”
“That sounds like confidence.”
“It is.”
Kael looked away.
He wasn't convinced.
Cherry had always been strong enough to handle herself, and that was exactly what made the request strange.
If she could deal with whatever appeared on the road herself, then there had to be another reason she wanted him there.
“You're leaving soon?”
“In three days.”
Kael looked back at her.
“Three days.”
“Yes.”
“And you decided to tell me now?”
“I decided to find you first.”
Kael gave her a tired look.
“That doesn't make it better.”
“It wasn't supposed to.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
The guild continued moving around them. Hunters passed through the courtyard entrance, some carrying weapons while others returned from their own assignments, but neither Kael nor Cherry paid them any attention.
Kael finally turned away.
“Find someone else.”
Cherry didn't move.
“You're refusing?”
“Yes.”
“Very well.”
Kael stopped.
That answer had come too easily.
He slowly turned his head.
Cherry was still standing there, completely calm.
“You're not going to argue?”
“No.”
Kael narrowed his eyes.
“That's suspicious.”
Cherry gave him a faint smile.
“You'll come.”
“I won't.”
“We'll see.”
She turned and began walking away.
Kael watched her leave.
After a few steps, she stopped.
“The mission starts in three days.”
Kael said nothing.
Cherry glanced over her shoulder.
“If I don't see you in three days...”
She paused.
“Make sure your house is strong enough to hold a Full Moon from me.”
Kael stared at her back.
Cherry continued walking.
Kael remained silent for several seconds.
He wasn't worried about the threat.
He was more annoyed by how certain she sounded.
He looked toward the courtyard where Darius had just been sitting.
Then toward the guild entrance.
Three days.
Kael sighed.
“This is going to be troublesome.”
He started walking.
Behind him, Cherry disappeared around the corner without looking back.
She had made her request.
As far as she was concerned, the matter was settled.
