Hunt Race

Chapter 188: Preparation

Two days remained before the mission.

Kael made his way to the guild's weapon storage early in the morning.

The place was already busy.

Hunters came and went through the large room, collecting weapons before heading out for their assignments. The occasional clang of steel echoed from the smithing area farther inside, mixed with the low conversations of Hunters preparing for the day.

Kael walked straight to the counter.

“My sword.”

The attendant looked up and recognized him immediately.

“Kael.”

He nodded and disappeared into the storage area.

Kael waited quietly.

A short while later, the attendant returned carrying his sword.

He placed it on the counter.

Kael picked it up.

The weight was familiar.

He held the sheath in one hand and slowly drew the blade.

SHING.

The polished steel caught the light.

Kael turned the sword slightly, examining the edge from the tip down to the hilt.

There were a few faint marks left from his previous battles, but nothing serious.

He ran his eyes along the blade once more.

Everything was fine.

Kael returned the sword to its sheath.

SHING.

He paused.

Then drew it again.

SHING.

The movement was smooth.

The blade slid from the sheath without resistance, settling naturally into his hand.

Kael gave it one final inspection before returning it to his waist.

The attendant watched him.

“Everything alright?”

“Yes.”

Kael turned toward the exit.

He had barely taken a few steps when the sound of metal striking metal came from the smithing area.

CLANG!

Kael glanced in that direction.

A blacksmith stood over an anvil, repeatedly hammering a heated blade while another worker prepared a second weapon nearby.

The smell of heated metal filled the room.

Kael continued walking.

As he stepped outside, the morning air felt considerably quieter.

The guild courtyard was already active.

Hunters gathered in small groups around the notice board, while others prepared horses and supplies for missions outside the city.

Kael walked past them.

A pair of Hunters moved aside to let him through.

One of them glanced at the sword at his waist.

“That's Kael.”

His companion looked over.

“The Bronze Rank?”

“Yeah.”

Kael heard them.

He didn't bother turning around.

He continued across the courtyard until he reached the outer corridor.

His steps slowed briefly.

Two days.

That was all the time left before the escort mission.

He still knew very little about what awaited them, but there was no reason to spend his time worrying about it.

Kael looked down at the sword resting against his side.

It was ready.

So was he.

He continued walking.

There was nothing else he needed from the guild today.

The mission would come soon enough.

Until then, Kael intended to enjoy the rare quiet.

He disappeared into the guild's main corridor, leaving the noise of the courtyard behind.
