Hunt Race

Chapter 74: The Shift

The battle continued.

Steel clashed against claws.

Growls echoed through the forest.

Leaves scattered with every exchange.

Nothing seemed different.

Yet Leon's eyes narrowed.

The wolves had changed.

The wounded Shadow Wolf no longer took the lead.

It lingered at the edge of the fight while the other two moved with renewed aggression.

The healthy wolf charged Leon.

Its claws swept toward his chest.

Clang!

Leon deflected the attack with the shaft of his spear.

Without pausing, he thrust toward its throat.

The wolf sprang back.

Leon immediately followed.

He refused to give it room to breathe.

His spear shot forward again.

The wolf twisted aside.

Another thrust.

Another dodge.

The beast was being pushed back.

Then—

The shadows stirred.

A black figure burst from the darkness.

Clang!

Leon abandoned his attack and turned his spear just in time to block the ambush.

The impact forced him sideways.

The wolf he had cornered escaped.

It didn't attack again.

Instead...

It circled behind its companions.

Another rotation.

Leon clicked his tongue.

"Tch."

He had almost finished it.

Almost.

Across the clearing...

Kael was locked in battle with another Shadow Wolf.

The beast attacked cautiously.

Unlike before...

It didn't press him relentlessly.

It struck once.

Twice.

Then retreated.

Almost as if...

It was buying time.

Kael frowned.

Something felt wrong.

The wolf before him wasn't trying to win.

It was keeping him occupied.

A loud clash drew his attention.

Clang!

Leon blocked another attack.

Before he could counter—

The hidden wolf emerged once more.

Its claws swept toward his ribs.

Leon spun, barely avoiding the strike.

The two wolves immediately attacked together.

One from the front.

One from the side.

Leon was forced back.

His boots carved through the dirt.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

...

Again.

The wolf before him barely attacked.

It simply stayed between him and Leon.

Another metallic clang rang through the forest.

Leon thrust his spear, forcing one wolf to retreat.

Before he could pursue—

The hidden wolf appeared.

Again.

Again.

Every time Leon gained the advantage...

The hidden wolf interrupted him.

Every time he tried to finish a wounded beast...

Another stepped in.

The pattern repeated.

Not once.

Not twice.

Every single time.

A sharp growl echoed through the forest.

The three Shadow Wolves shifted.

Two closed in on Leon.

The third stepped into Kael's path.

Kael tried to move past it.

The wolf immediately matched his movement.

Left.

It moved left.

Right.

It moved right.

It wasn't trying to attack.

It was blocking him.

Another clash rang out.

Clang!

Leon was forced back again.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"..."

He finally understood.

The wolves had changed their prey.
