Leon slid backward, his boots carving two long trails across the forest floor.
Before he could steady himself—
One Shadow Wolf lunged from the front.
Another emerged from Silent Veil.
Clang!
Leon caught one set of claws with his spear.
The second scraped across his shoulder, tearing through his leather armor.
He gritted his teeth and kicked the attacking wolf away.
The beasts refused to relent.
The moment one retreated...
Another replaced it.
They gave him no time to breathe.
Across the clearing...
Kael tried to break through.
The wolf before him immediately intercepted.
Its claws flashed.
Kael met them with his sword.
Clang!
He sidestepped and slashed.
The wolf retreated.
Not toward Leon.
Toward the shadows.
Another switch.
Kael stopped.
His eyes shifted to Leon.
The wolves weren't even looking at him anymore.
Their emerald eyes remained fixed on the spearman.
Leon thrust again.
His spear narrowly missed the wounded wolf.
Before he could recover—
The hidden wolf burst from the darkness.
Bang!
Leon blocked the ambush.
A second wolf immediately followed.
The attacks came without pause.
One.
Then another.
Then another.
Kael's grip tightened.
"If this keeps up..."
Leon would eventually make a mistake.
That was all the wolves needed.
Kael took a slow breath.
His gaze settled on the wolf blocking his path.
"So..."
"You're the one keeping me out of this."
The Shadow Wolf growled.
Then it charged.
Kael didn't retreat.
He stepped forward.
Their weapons met.
Clang!
The wolf twisted, trying to disengage.
It wanted to delay him again.
Kael refused.
He stayed on it.
One slash.
The wolf avoided it.
A second.
It ducked beneath the blade.
The beast sprang backward, preparing to retreat into the shadows.
Kael's eyes sharpened.
"Not this time."
His sword flashed.
Ripple Slash.
Shhk!
The first slash cut across the wolf's foreleg.
Before it could recover—
The returning slash tore through its shoulder.
Blood sprayed across the leaves.
The Shadow Wolf cried out.
It stumbled as it fled into the shadows.
Three seconds passed.
The forest fell silent.
Then—
The wounded wolf burst back into view with a pained growl.
It couldn't remain hidden.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"..."
Something had changed.
