The Alpha vanished.
Leon reacted instantly.
"Down!"
Kael threw himself to the ground.
BOOM!
A massive claw tore through the space where his head had been a heartbeat earlier.
The shockwave blasted dirt and shattered roots into the air.
The Alpha landed between them.
Its emerald eyes burned with murderous intent.
It didn't pause.
It struck again.
Clang!
Leon barely raised his spear in time.
The impact exploded through his arms.
His feet left the ground as he was hurled backward.
Crash!
He smashed through a tree before rolling across the forest floor.
"Leon!"
Kael rushed toward him.
The Alpha turned.
Its gaze shifted onto Kael.
It took one step.
Then another.
Calm.
Unhurried.
As though Kael was already dead.
The surrounding Shadow Wolves instinctively backed away, leaving a clear path for their king.
Leon staggered to his feet.
Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
"Kael!"
He looked around.
The wolves had unconsciously opened a gap while making way for the Alpha.
His eyes lit up.
"NOW!"
Kael understood immediately.
The two exploded toward the opening.
The nearest Shadow Wolves lunged to stop them.
"Flash Pierce!"
Boom!
Leon drove his spear forward.
The first wolf was blasted aside.
"Ripple Slash!"
Shhk!
Kael's twin slashes forced the second wolf back.
The third tried to intercept.
Leon slammed the shaft of his spear into its skull.
Bang!
The wolf crashed into two others.
The opening widened.
"Go!"
The two hunters burst through.
They didn't stop.
They didn't look back.
Branches whipped past their faces as they sprinted deeper into the forest.
Behind them...
The pack suddenly stopped.
Growls filled the air.
Yet none of the Shadow Wolves crossed the invisible line before them.
Kael glanced back.
"They're not following!"
Leon didn't answer.
He had already felt it.
Heavy footsteps echoed behind them.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Only one beast had crossed the boundary.
The Alpha.
A deafening roar erupted somewhere ahead.
The ground trembled violently.
Trees shook.
Even Kael's heartbeat faltered.
"We crossed into another beast's territory..." Leon muttered.
The Alpha didn't care.
It never slowed.
Its emerald eyes remained locked on the fleeing hunters.
The distance between them continued to shrink.
The hunt...
Had only just begun.
