I ACCIDENTALLY MARRIED A DUNGEON
Chapter 78: I’m so strong, they just keep running. They stepped into the cave, and Felix took four cards out of his pocket, filling each with Numen until the blue glow became so bright that it illuminated the walls sharply. He set them hovering in front, floating a couple of feet away from each other and illuminating their path ahead.
"Little moisture here," he noted, running his fingers along the walls of the cave. His fingers felt the grooves cut into the rock. "Very strange for a cave so deep."
Dune remained silent as her eyes scanned along the walls of the cave where the blue light was dancing.
Further down the cave, Felix noticed some rocks lying on the floor of the passage, dark and rough, reflecting oddly in the blue light. He crouched and took one of them in his hands, holding it in front of his face for a second before dropping. "Blackstone serpent." He quickly rose to his feet, trying to look around. The four cards hovering above his head started clustering around him, reading the Numen that he could not see in the air yet. He continued walking slowly, his pace becoming even more cautious. He noticed the holes made in the walls, and the number of them increased as they went deeper in the cave, becoming lower to the ground.
"Should be their nests." He stopped in front of one and crouched to look inside. All he saw was darkness inside. He picked up the scale again, holding it in his palm, before dropping it right next to the hole.
He waited.
The vibration hit them at once, shaking the ground under their feet and making little rocks falling from the ceiling above.
"Get behind me." Felix shrugged, cracking his neck as he began making hand gestures in the empty air, as though fine-tuning something intangible.
The tremor intensified and from each and every hole, heads of the serpents emerged, mouths gaping wide, scales reflecting the bluish hue of the light. Felix moved his fingers and another three cards appeared in the air next to the others, all flying towards the faces of the serpents in no time, rotating in a circle right in front of their eyes.
"Come on," he said with a smile on his lips. "Move."
The serpents hesitated, their heads swaying back and forth as their tongues lashed out to touch the rapidly rotating cards.
"This time is different from last one when I left after killing only one of you. Now I’m going to kill all of you." The cards stopped rotating and began to spin even faster, the hands of Felix moving more rapidly as well.
The heads of serpents looked at each other, their tongues lashing out faster and faster, something being exchanged between them that Felix did not understand. All of a sudden, all four heads withdrew back into the holes and vanished into darkness.
"Wait a minute! Where are you running to? Come fight me!" Felix’s voice sounded shocked and frustrated.
Another tremor went through the tunnel, and then everything returned to silence, which seemed to be thicker now.
Felix spit near the nearest hole. "Get back out here!" he yelled directly into the darkness but did not receive any reaction. "Come on!" he threw the scale into the wall with force, kicking at the stones covering the floor of the tunnel. "So afraid that they didn’t even try anything."
He scoffed, shaking his head as he turned to continue his walk further into the tunnel. "Guess they get to live this time. Let’s go," he said, turning back to Dune. "I smell more monsters ahead."
They entered into a small hall made of rock with several openings leading into different directions, and each of them led them further away into darkness. Felix examined all of the openings and chose the widest of them and went inside without any delay.
"This one," he said, touching one side of it. "This one feels right."
Dune followed him without saying a single word.
The corridor opened into yet another passage, and two little rock lizards jumped off the walls the moment the blue light touched them and ran to cracks which were too small for Felix to go inside of them.
"That’s right, run," Felix smiled. "Good decision."
Deeper in the tunnel they found something else that blocked their path: it was a creature, a hunched thing with too many arms flattened against the wall of the corridor. Felix stopped, cards started to drift ahead of him, but the creature didn’t do anything: it just stood there motionless, like it didn’t notice them.
"Hmm," Felix frowned, moving forward and stopping in front of it. "Not going to run away?"
Felix pushed one of the hovering cards against one of its sides, but the creature didn’t react on that: it didn’t move an inch, nor it even flinched, as if it couldn’t even see him.
"Tough guys," he shrugged. "Well, looks like it realizes that you cannot win here."
The passage continued twisting deeper and deeper, and with it appeared another branch after another, and the pattern remained the same throughout their journey. All of the things that were weak and small enough ran as soon as the blue light reached them and hid in cracks and side passages. As for bigger creatures, they just stood still and didn’t pay attention to him whatsoever.
Felix crouched down in front of one of them, which was curled against the floor of the passage, and slowly waved his hand in front of what could be called its face. The creature didn’t move at all; he prodded it with the edge of one of the cards. It didn’t flinch or even reacted somehow.
"You alive in there?" Felix prodded it again, hard.
Dune stood a few steps behind him. "It is not responding."
"Yeah, I noticed." Felix got back onto his feet, wiping his hands and having a moment of doubt for just an instant before shaking it away. "Who cares? Not my problem if it prefers to just lay around until it dies eventually."
He continued moving forward, his cards following him, illuminating the pathway before each and every turn. Something new appeared in front of him time and again, yet it was always the same story — it was either scared away or paid no mind to him whatsoever, with no in-betweens anywhere.
"This place is weirder than I imagined." Felix said it in a whisper. "Although, I guess it’s better for us."
Dune remained silent.
The tunnel seemed to be longer than Felix thought it was going to be, with every turn coming up without any real fight to prove his presence there.
"This is ridiculous." Felix kicked the loose stone away. "There is something in here that’s so frightened by five serpents and all the rest that it doesn’t even want to look at me, yet I can’t land a single blow."
Dune remained silent.
"You’d think that one of them would make an attempt at least." He shoved his hands back in his pockets, stepping faster than before. "Any kind. Scratch, bite, anything. Just something that we could do something about and fight."
The tunnel took another turn, and light appeared somewhere ahead, at first dim and then growing brighter with every step. Felix stepped out of the tunnel automatically, feet landing on solid ground of unknown place without intention.
Ahead of them stood another mountain but unlike any others they had seen before, green was covering slopes of the mountains and there were real trees growing with real leaves and thick enough for him.
His fist clenched tightly on his hip. "It’s here. I can feel it.
"Sabrina says that it’s dangerous."
Felix didn’t look back. "She doesn’t know anything." He stretched his shoulder blades. "Stay behind me. Or hide somewhere. I’ll handle the rest myself."
