I ACCIDENTALLY MARRIED A DUNGEON
Chapter 79: Your end’s already carved in stone.Everything was changing around him from the moment he stepped inside, moisture clinging to the soil below his feet, thin green grass growing on the walls, something he had not seen in any other part of the mountain yet. He touched the stone wall with his fingers, and only then his frown became evident, as soon as he realized how powerful Numen was here; it was so powerful that it was as if his fingers were submerged into a newly formed lake by touching the wall.
I know exactly where this is coming from.
The path was getting wider and wider, now the green veins could be noticed climbing up the walls of the passage, growing on the soil and moving to every corner of this underground space. The air was getting thicker with moisture at every step until, finally, he saw the opening to the giant hall, which had the appearance of an empty mausoleum with sunlight streaming down from the top of it, shining in golden light. His eyes fell onto the tree growing at the center of the hall, one meter in diameter, green from the bottom to the top of the tree, veins growing from the bottom of it and going everywhere along the floor.
"Stay here." Felix waved Dune to stay where she was and moved on towards the tree alone.
"So that’s why the Death Forest has looked half dead these past few months." Felix said mockingly. "Numenroot. I’ve never seen such a thing in person. They say it became extinct ages ago, but even the ancient ones couldn’t extend their control to an area the size of the Death Forest. They are just weak monsters that rank low; anything could eat them without putting any effort into it."
He leaned his head sideways, examining the plant. "But how does this little thing have an influence on the entire ecology of this forest?"
The Numenroot started trembling, the veins stretching and hitting the young man, flying toward him at the speed of lightning.
"It does not matter anymore." Felix grinned. "Your end’s already carved in stone."
The four cards hovering around him started spinning even faster, slicing each vein heading for him without even bothering about it. And then one of them got past the protective shield of the cards and wrapped itself around the Felix’s arm. Felix tore it away from the tree with ease. The Numenroot trembled, and the place where it had ripped the vein out was covered with splinters of the bark.
The cards continued attacking their enemy mercilessly, slicing deeper and deeper, and one of them cut through the tree at its roots with a single move. The plant fell, crashing onto the ground with a splash.
"That’s it?" Felix looked up at the cards, which were drifting lazily above the fallen tree. He turned back toward Dune, shrugging. "I guess we’re already done here."
"It’s growing back." Dune looked over his shoulder.
Felix turned. Where the trunk had been severed cleanly in two, there was now a new shoot that was quickly thickening and shooting up to a full meter in a matter of seconds, the fallen portion now gray and dried out, deprived of its life source. The tree quickly regained its full height within a few seconds, looking exactly as it had before the trunk was even severed.
Felix smiled. "Fine. We’ll do this the hard way."
The veins burst out of the base of the trunk and shot towards him at high speed. Instantly he raised his hand, and the cards reacted accordingly, slicing the incoming veins apart before they reached him and turning around to slice the trunk a second time.
This time, the tree grew back even quicker than last time, right before his eyes, rising up to over a meter and a half in height, veins spreading further and lashing out to attack the cards instead of him.
Felix began to approach the tree, letting two additional cards slide out of his sleeve as he did so. The cards joined the other cards, seeming to move about with an intelligence of their own, slicing through the veins and knocking them away, slashing anything else that came too close. Two of the veins shot toward him, and one card sliced them away at the last moment while the other severed the base of the trunk once more.
But the Numenroot wasn’t slowing down either. It was growing at an even quicker pace now, reaching two meters in bulk and becoming even slimmer at its trunk, however, having already grown a dozen new veins with an additional ten of them whipping about faster than ever before. The cards tried to do everything to cut them down, however, the regeneration was always ahead of them, growing a new layer right after each cut. All six cards were spinning wildly around the tree, and only once one of them managed to reach the trunk, was caught by the Numenroot and flung away across the hall.
Two veins shot out to get Felix as he approached. He bent his knees and let them go over his head, not breaking his pace. The vines snapped back quickly enough and tried again, and he just managed to move his legs at the last second, barely managing to avoid getting cut by the vines that passed right next to his sleeves. He wasn’t stopping anymore. He lunged forward grabbing one of the veins and trying to tear it off from the trunk.
The surge of Numen flowed through his arm, heating up and making the cards spin even faster, tearing the Numenroot’s veins at a pace that made it harder for the plant to regenerate. Felix pulled on the vine with all his might, and it made the tree shake violently, forcing the last veins that it had to come for him. With his hand locked around the one vein, the cards had a clear opening, and they took it, slashing into the trunk from both sides at once until it toppled and crashed down flat.
Felix let the vein, which he still clutched tightly with his fist, free and continued moving forward without hesitation. Behind him, the felled tree trunk was twitching, growing again, and getting thicker with its bark swelling as it climbed upwards from the stump. He moved through the remaining distance before the process completed and took a hold of the trunk at its lower end, while it was still small, and hoisted it with all his might.
The veins sprang from the bark automatically, whipping about frantically in their attempt to latch on to any piece of his body that was within their reach, but the cards created an unbreakable barrier around him, reflecting all the blows that were aimed at him. Felix pushed against the trunk and tugged at it, and with one last effort, the roots broke free from the soil.
The tree ceased to move in his grip.
He let out a hard breath and hurled it back across the hall.
He spit on the floor. "This is it."
