I am the Only Son of Nyx

Chapter 263: Escalation (Bonus PS)

Choosing a Scourge-class Star Beast as the protector of the Heart of Dragon is a bad idea.

No matter how one looked at it, this is simply too much.

Despite the inhibitor, its wind affinity remained, and its strength was also monstrous.

Sure, the academy somehow mind-controlled it to make it focus on simply keeping the Heart of Dragon in its grasp with no intention of killing the two finalists, but it was still a Scourge-class Star Beast.

Its beastly instincts resurfaced whenever it was in peril.

Just like earlier, it whipped its tail so fast and hard out of pure instinct.

And a movement born of pure survival instinct was, without question, fuelled by everything.

Kai and Chester were badly hurt from the direct hit.

Pain seared through every inch of their bodies—the brutal aftermath of crashing to the ground like meteors. But neither of them could afford to stay down. The final round wasn’t over, not even close.

It was still going, and they needed to get up.

Chester planted his shield into the ground, using it to push himself up.

He pushed up, but the world was still spinning as he dropped down again with a groan.

Kai, on the other hand, tried to move his body, but he couldn’t. He looked down at his left arm and felt his stomach turn. It was twisted to the side at an unnatural angle, and he could vividly feel the bone pressed against his skin from within.

Slowly, he reached over with his other hand.

His fingers were shaking as he wrapped them around the broken part of his left arm.

Just imagining the pain from doing what he had in mind, Kai took a few rapid breaths through his nose. And then, he wrenched the bone back into place—with one quick motion. The crack was loud, and his vision went white.

A pained grunt tore from his throat, and tears pricked at the corners of his eyes.

Kai pressed the back of his head against the wall, doing anything he could to ease the pain.

For a long, agonizing moment, he endured the pain.

He could feel the darkness from the Reckless Ruin Ending Fragment flowing into the fractures like a healing liquid, wrapped around the misaligned bone—and began to fix it. The pain was still there, but the arm slowly became functional again.

And that was all that mattered.

Kai struggled to climb up to his feet—one hand braced against the wall to help him rise.

Blood dripped from his lips, streaking his chin—and he paused to take a breath as his broken body screamed at him to stop. But how could he? Just across the arena֫—Chester was already on his feet, too.

Seeing them eat their meteoric fall and stand up again, the crowd couldn’t believe their eyes.

"Look, they are still standing!"

"Forget High Angel Chester—how is Lesser Angel Kai even standing? He didn’t break his fall at all. Surviving that should’ve been impossible—let alone rising to his feet. Is he really a new Angel? I can’t believe what I’m seeing."

"His body is comparable, if not stronger, than us seniors. What in the world?"

It was the academy’s intention to help new Angels master the use of winged boots by holding the second class—to better prepare them to properly defeat Star Beasts. But not only that, but this class would also prevent them from dying foolishly from a fall.

Even with their superhuman physique, a fall from the sky would kill them.

Anyone who fell from such a height would die, but Kai survived.

More than that, he could even still stand up, though his body was now steaming with darkness.

Chester met with Kai’s eyes for a long, suspended moment.

And then, he dashed at his sickle.

Kai did the same, forcing his battered body forward. He rolled, snatched the scimitar from the ground, and started to rise for another strike. With the four-winged bird wounded, it was time for him to take Chester out.

But he froze before he could move.

Around the arena, the air churned—thick with a sudden, enormous surge of energy.

Both of them slowly looked up and bear witnessed to the four-winged bird flaring its wings.

Each flap that it made intensified the energy it was emanating.

Before their very eyes, a green, shimmering outline began to wrap around its entire form.

And with a piercing roar, the four-winged bird beat its wings in a violent downstroke.

Swoosh—!

Kai and Chester watched the deadly wind descend toward them. Within its churning mass— glints of green flickered like cruel winks, almost playful, if not for the killing edge they carried. As the storm closed in, they realized what they were.

Blades of wind.

Layered invisible and razor-sharp waves that threatened to shred anything that got into it.

Chester dropped to one knee—and hid behind his scaled shield, bracing as the blades struck against it in a percussive rhythm. Each impact rang through his arms like a hammer on anvil, while his body strained to endure the force.

On the other hand, Ka had no shield.

So, he ran to a large slab of arena floor that the earlier crash had peeled loose, and heaved the heavy rock up with both hands—dropping his scimitar without a second thought. He ducked beneath it as the first wind blades struck.

For a few precious seconds, the slab held.

Then, a wind blade that was larger than the rest slammed and cracked it.

Another followed, and the slab shattered into spinning shards, leaving Kai exposed.

Kai gritted his teeth—and scrambled toward his scimitar. He turned right on time as another wind blade was already upon him. Sparks flew around him as he raised his scimitar to block it in the nick of time.

In the next moment, his body moved in a frantic blur of parrying and deflecting what he could.

The Reckless Ruin Ending Fragment made him stronger physically—but even then, his body was now heavier from everything that had happened. Exhaustion was still present inside him, and it made him sluggish.

One wind blade slipped past his defense.

It carved a crimson line across his chest as he pivoted.

Had he not twisted in that exact second, the wind blade would’ve impaled him.

Fortunately, the danger had already passed.

But Kai was given no chance to breathe as Chester already moved. He gathered himself—and shot skyward. His winged boots flared and flapped even harder as he watched the four-winged bird waver, its massive frame sagged after the exertion of its attack.

Chester’s eyes sharpened—this was his opening.

One more solid him, one more savage blow might force the beast to let go of its treasure.

Might force it to release the Heart of Dragon—the winning condition of the final round.

Despite the exhaustion and the pain, Kai followed without hesitation. Every breath scraped against his throat like broken glass, and his vision blurred at the edges, focus flickering in and out. But he forced his legs to move. One step. Then another.

No matter what, he needed to keep moving.

He assumed the same method, leaping from one side of the red barrier to another.

Spiralling upward as fast as he could, as his chest dripped with blood.

Even his grip on the scimitar became slippery from the sweat and gore, but he kept going.

If he waited a second longer, then he might give away the window for Chester to win.

Not even midway to reach the four-winged bird, Chester made an abrupt turn.

It was sudden—too sudden. Chester broke decisively from his ascent and blasted sideways, charging straight for Kai just as his feet touched the barrier. Kai’s pupils dilated. Pure instinct wrenched the scimitar up, and steel met savage steel as he blocked Chester’s downward sickle strike by a hair’s breadth.

Both weapons clashed, and sparks exploded between them.

Chester twisted his sickle, hooking it around Kai’s blade and pulling hard.

His pull dragged Kai off the barrier.

It was an attempt to hurt Kai back down to the ground.

Kai’s free hand shot out, stabbing into the red barrier wall to keep him from being flung back down, and he slammed against it with a grunt. The impact rattled through his body, but then an axe kick slammed into his face.

He slid further down until his boots landed on the ground.

Blood trickled down his nose.

Kai shook his head and panted heavily.

As much as he wanted to keep going, his body was nearing its limit. Even now, darkness was already encroaching on his vision from the edges. His body might be mended for the time being by the Reckless Ruin Ending Fragment, but he might pass out again soon.

Then, he looked up.

Surrendering wasn’t an option, so he had to keep fighting.

But he found Chester hovering above like a sky warrior staring down at a monster.

His winged boots kept him suspended there, and the eyes behind the mask were ice. He stared down at Kai—with open contempt. "Stay down, Lesser Angel." The words sliced through the space between them sharply. "Don’t get in my way. Accept your loss."

Swoosh—!

Chester blasted skyward, leaving Kai behind without a second glance, and re-engaged against the four-winged bird with calculated precision. This time, his movements were flawless. Not even one attack from the beast landed on him.

He had read the patterns, learned its rhythms, and now he overwhelmed it.

Swoosh—!

A whipping tail lashed toward him, and he slipped past it with ease.

A wingbeat aimed to crush him, and he was already gone, soaring upward—until he hovered right before the four-winged bird’s face. His blue eyes flared with mana and flashed. Another Legacy Imprint, and the four-winged bird’s massive body went rigid, stunned mid-air.

Possessing a second Legacy Imprint is surprising.

Chester had done well to please Perseus in the last few months.

Either way, he didn’t waste this opening and dove for the wounded wing once again.

He swung his sickle hard, carving through feather and flesh until the blade bit into the bone.

A painful squeal escaped the four-winged bird’s throat, and it tore through the arena.

Chester raised his sickle for the decisive blow, ready to send the beast crashing to the ground.

But before the strike could fall, something wrapped around his ankle. No—It was a hand. Kai wrapped his strong fingers around his ankle with impossible force, and then pulled, swinging Chester around and hurling him downward.

Chester was poised to attack one second, and the next, the world inverted.

His eyes widened in genuine surprise as he plummeted and slammed into the ground.

Crash—!

Mana surged through Chester’s winged boots as he plummeted. He tried to stop the falling momentum with all his might, but it wasn’t enough. He crashed onto the ground and skidded back.

"Lesser Angel!" He roared as he glared at Kai above. "I’m going to kill you!"
